Hunter Biden’s Kamala Harris Criticism Adds To Growing Rift Between Her And The Bidens
Hunter Biden has been outspoken in recent months, commenting on a wide variety of matters in interviews and social media posts. Now, a series of comments he made about Vice President Kamala Harris, who served in his father's administration, are raising eyebrows. The seemingly unprompted criticisms of Harris come as speculation surrounds the former vice president concerning another presidential run.
Hunter Biden questions Kamala Harris on loyalty to his father
Hunter Biden's comments about Vice President Harris were made during a sit-down interview with journalist and Zeteo News founder Mehdi Hasan. During the interview, Hasan asked Biden to explain comments he had made about Harris in which he described her as "not a very good politician." Biden initially deflected, instead discussing Harris' potential as a 2028 presidential candidate. "I think that the vice president served the country incredibly well and that she has a deep, rich future in politics," Biden said. "Whether she wants to run for president again, she'll be one of the, if not, the frontrunner." However, when pressed by Hasan on whether he thought Harris was a good politician, Biden responded, "No, and I think that the way that she's going about it right now is, at least from my perspective …" Hasan attempted to get him to offer specifics behind his assessment.
While not directly answering the question, Biden alluded to what he saw as attempts by Harris to distance herself from President Biden. "I think that this administration, unlike you, I don't think that she should have ever been any daylight between, she can make daylight between herself and my dad, but not in terms of what they were able to accomplish over that four-year period," Biden explained. "I think that there might be daylight as issues related to Gaza and as it relates to Israel that of course, she needs to be able to stake her own ground on that." Hasan countered, arguing that Harris explicitly refused to break with Biden's policies toward Gaza and noting that pundits have argued that her loyalty to Biden and his positions may have cost Harris the election . Biden, however, maintained that while Harris was loyal to President Biden and his positions, that her choice had "nothing to do with loyalty to my dad, from my perspective." Biden held that "I think that she was loyal to my father, and I don't think she was loyal to a fault, however. There are certain things she was not loyal on."
Harris, Bidens exchange criticisms as she contemplates 2028 presidential run
Hunter Biden's harsh words toward Harris represent growing distance between the former vice president and members of President Biden's family and administration. Harris had words of criticism for President Biden in her memoir 107 Days , including his decision to run for reelection a "reckless" choice made by the president and his wife Jill. Hunter Biden mentioned the book in his interview, saying, "I think right now her recent appearances that I've seen and what she's trying to distance herself from my dad, the things that she wrote in her book, that we're not loyal in any way. And, so, there is not like this 100 percent." Former First Lady Jill Biden, meanwhile, criticized Harris in her memoir View From the East Wing , saying that Harris — who previously served as Attorney General of California — acted like a "courtroom prosecutor" in pushing President Biden to immediately endorse Harris when he decided to drop out of the 2024 race . President Biden, meanwhile, has mostly avoided public criticism of his former running mate and vice president, blaming Harris' 2024 loss on racism and sexism while distancing himself from accusations that he pressured Harris to hold the administration's line on issues such as Gaza.
The discussions of Harris and her 2024 campaign come as the former vice president is said to be contemplating another run for the presidency. Polls have shown that at this stage, Harris remains one of the leading potential Democratic nominees, along with other potential presidential candidates like California Governor Gavin Newsom and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, among others. Harris, in particular, has emphasized the importance of Black voters to Democrats' future success. As a potential sign of her own enduring clout, Harris has waded into the 2026 elections, endorsing politicians such as Arkansas gubernatorial candidate Chris Jones . She has also continued to clash with President Trump, her 2024 election opponent; in a sign of apparent vindictiveness, Trump cancelled Harris' Secret Service protection soon after he returned to the White House.
Should Harris launch a 2028 presidential campaign, it appears that members of the Biden family may not be among her biggest supporters. While President Biden has mostly stayed out of the conversation, Harris and members of the Biden family have publicly exchanged words about one another, with Hunter Biden now criticizing Harris for not being loyal enough despite others claiming that she was in fact too loyal to President Biden during her previous campaign.
