More Americans blame Trump for high prices than blamed Biden, new poll shows

Most Americans believe President Donald Trump's policies are behind higher-than-normal prices, according to a new poll.

Sixty-five percent of Americans said high prices are a result of Trump's policies, according to the latest AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll. Another 33% said higher prices were due to factors outside of Trump's control.

The Associated Press reported that more voters blame Trump for higher prices than blamed former President Joe Biden in the lead up to the 2022 midterm elections. In October 2022, 44% blamed Biden's policies for high prices, while 55% said high prices were out of his control.

The poll found that just 17% of Americans approved of Trump's handling of the cost of living and just 26% approved of his handling of the economy overall. His approval rating on the economy is a new low for the president, according to The Associated Press.

The poll showed voters are souring on Trump over the national economy, with about six in 10 adults saying it is worse off since the president took office in 2025. Fifty-five percent said their local economy is worse off now than when Trump took office, and 60% said the country as a whole is worse off.

Trump vowed to fix the economy and bring down the cost of living starting on "Day 1″ of his second term. However, his tariffs and war against Iran have kept prices high for most Americans over the last 18 months.

Just 28% approved of Trump's handling of the Iran war, and 69% said the war has not been worth it for Americans. The war in Iran has sent gas prices skyrocketing throughout the U.S., sparking concerns from voters.

The poll showed that nearly half of Americans are extremely or very concerned about affording groceries or filling up their gas tanks in the next few months.

The poll was conducted among 2,140 adults between Sept. 24 and Sept. 28. It has a margin of sampling error for adults overall of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.

The poll results could suggest trouble for Trump's Republican Party in the midterm elections, which are about one month away.

A number of recent polls have shown Democrats with an advantage over Republicans on the generic congressional ballot. The RealClearPolitics average shows Democrats with 51% support and Republicans with about 42% support, according to the aggregate of polls.
