NC Senate candidates, Cooper and Whatley, visit Charlotte area with election one week away

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- With election day now about a week away, polls still show Democrat Roy Cooper leading Republican Michael Whatley by more than 10 percentage points in the race for a North Carolina U.S. Senate seat.
While in the Charlotte area this week, both candidates argued they are the right choice for the Tar Heel State.
"I'm going to fight every single day for the people of North Carolina to make more and keep more of their own money. We're going to fight to make sure that we have safe kids and safe communities, and that America is going to be the most respected nation on the face of the earth," Whatley said while in Huntersville.
"I'm going to put the people first. The people will come before politics. The people will come before party. The people will come before power," said Cooper while in Charlotte.

Whatley hosted a Get Out The Vote Rally in Huntersville on Monday night.
Pollsters seem to agree Cooper is the heavy favorite; the Cook Political Report classified the seat as likely Democrat , making it the only Senate seat currently held by a Republican that was given such a classification. But still, both candidates refuse to say the race is a done deal.

Cooper met with voters and supporters in Charlotte on Tuesday morning.
"We're upbeat, we're excited, everywhere I go, and we have been from one end of the state to the other. We're getting great responses. We're getting great enthusiasm. People are getting up. They're getting out there, getting interested in voting," Whatley said.
"We're going hard all the way through the finish line. We know how critical it is. And I would encourage people to not take anything for granted," argued Cooper.
Early voting in North Carolina runs through Oct. 31. Election Day is Nov. 3.
