‘Shut them off’: Teachers union president says turn off AI in schools

NEW YORK (PIX11) — United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew joins PIX11 to discuss the upcoming school year and the city's new rules to limit artificial intelligence and screen time in classrooms.

He says he agrees with the new rules, but that the burden is being put on the schools and teachers instead of the companies, who he says can simply turn off the platforms in schools. Mulgrew says the Schools Chancellor, Kamar Samuels is looking into it.

When it comes to staffing concerns, Mulgrew says they are still working on adjusting to new classroom size rules, but that there is a shortage. He says the union and city will get into a PR fight, with the city disagreeing that there is a shortage, meaning they will have to go through each school to prove their case.

When it comes to budget cuts, the UFT agrees with points from the City Council that the budget is bloated, especially when it comes to paying outside consultants.
