Steve Hilton offers $3 gas in Miramar during gubernatorial campaign event

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Cars lined up around the Stars and Stripes gas station in Miramar on Monday morning, all hoping to take advantage of a $3-per-gallon gas offer from California gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton and state controller candidate Herb Morgan.
"I think this will open their eyes that we can actually go back to $3," said Jason Keo, community liaison for Together Hospice.
The event is aimed at providing some relief to drivers feeling the pinch at the pump.
"You can have $3 gas with Steve Hilton as your governor, or you can have $8 gas with Becerra. If Becerra wins, it's $8 gas. That is the projection from a USC energy economist about where gas prices will go in California if we don't change our policies," Hilton said.
Lowering gas prices is one of the numerous policies Hilton plans to enact if elected. However, one question he frequently faces is how he plans to make that happen.
"We're going to stop costly foreign imports. We have all the gas and oil we need right here in California. Why are we shipping it in from halfway around the world? Number two, we're going to reduce the regulations that make it twice as expensive to refine oil into gasoline here compared to Louisiana, for no benefit. But the big one is I'm going to stop the hidden tax on gas that is going directly to Sacramento to waste on things like high-speed rail," Hilton said.
Keo and Leslie Distrito of Together Hospice see the effects of high gas prices daily, particularly on their nurses and patients. They said they are ready for new leadership.
"We see patients in their homes and communities, so we travel all around the county. Seeing high gas prices makes it very difficult for our nurses to continue, so we need them to go down," said Distrito, director of nursing at Together Hospice.
"We need new leadership that will get California in the right direction because it's going downhill," Keo said.
The national average for a gallon of gas is just over $4, while California's average is around $6.
Some drivers said lower prices would make a real difference in their day-to-day budgets.
"It's going to help me a lot so I can buy more clothes, more diapers, more wipes for my daughter. I can pay less for gas to come up here to work in Miramar as well," said Pablo, a local father.
This offer was limited to the first 150 vehicles, and organizers plan to hold more events in the near future. Those interested in bringing the event to their community can visit their website .
