New storm could bring widespread rain, chance of lightning this weekend. When do clouds let up?
A storm coming to Massachusetts could bring over an inch of rain, lightning and heavy winds this weekend.
Skies should be overcast by 12 a.m. on Saturday after gathering Friday afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service. After midnight, it is likely to start developing in Western Massachusetts and move east overnight.
This storm is on track to bring some elevated instability going into early Saturday morning, but should be light to moderate coming from Western Massachusetts, including the Berkshires, forecasters said. This pattern should gradually move across Central and Eastern Massachusetts between 3 and 6 a.m.
"...[There] certainly could be some downpours in some of this rain activity but we expect rain to be pretty welcomed in light of recent dry weather we've had," forecasters wrote.
Overnight lows should remain mild for late April, with lows in the 50s and possibly above 60 towards Western Massachusetts and Connecticut, forecasters said.
Conditions should remain mild and humid during Saturday's washout, forecasters said. Moderate rain should persist through the morning, with moderate downpours gradually moving offshore. Western Massachusetts should see rain taper off mid-morning, while the rest of the state should see it diminish by the late morning or early afternoon.
Boston could see rainfall totals at around 1.15 inches, while Springfield could see slightly higher totals at around 1.29 inches, according to a forecast map. Rain around the Cape and Islands should be less than 1 inch, with Provincetown and Barnstable possibly seeing 0.89 inches of rain. Worcester could see between three-quarters to 1 inch of rain.
Eastern Massachusetts likely sees no risk of lightning during this weekend, while everywhere west sees a limited risk between Saturday and Sunday.

Temperatures should might be in the low 60s, with cloud cover likely keeping conditions cool compared to Friday's highs, forecasters continued. If Western Massachusetts sees clouds break up, temperatures could reach the mid-60s to low 70s.
Forecasters are uncertain about when the cloud cover should dissipate after the rain is over. Some modeling suggests that cloud cover could clear up in the Berkshires, Connecticut Valley and western parts of Worcester County on Saturday afternoon. But the chance for instability could thwart the chances of some sunshine emerging.
An air mass previously thought to elevate the chances of a thunderstorm threat could prove to be more stable, lowering those thunderstorm chances, forecasters said.
Then a cold front later on Saturday should bring temperatures down Saturday night, with overnight lows in the 40s, forecasters said. Winds associated with this air mass could reach between 10 to 15 mph.
Sunday should see cold, blustery conditions, with wind gusts reaching between 35 and 45 mph, with gusts potentially reaching 60 mph, according to the weather service. These heavier winds could hit later in the day, but forecasters are not certain about this timing.
Temperatures could struggle to go over 60 degrees, with forecasters anticipating daytime highs in the mid- to high 50s.
Higher temperatures return on Monday, likely in the low 70s, forecasters said. Similar conditions should continue until midweek, when a new system could emerge, but dry could could delay any more rain for the end of the week.
