A D.C. man was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty to felony animal cruelty for violently abusing two family dogs, according to federal prosecutors.

Georvell Brown, 33, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced in D.C. Superior Court in connection with felony animal cruelty, as well as separate cases involving assault and threats at a Metro station, a drunken-driving crash and a Bail Reform Act violation.

Brutal animal cruelty

According to prosecutors, Brown attacked two dogs belonging to his mother and sister on Jan. 17 while three children were inside the home.

Prosecutors said Brown repeatedly punched a Yorkshire terrier named Prada until the dog escaped and hid under a bed.

They said Brown then repeatedly stabbed a blind pit bull named Queen, also known as Queenie, in the mouth with two large knives while the dog was confined inside a crate.

According to court records, a 911 call captured barking dogs and family members pleading with Brown to stop.

Emergency responders found Queenie bleeding heavily and requiring emergency veterinary treatment for severe mouth injuries, including lacerations beneath the tongue.

Previous incidents

Prosecutors said Brown had previously abused both dogs. A 2024 police report alleged he kicked Prada and stabbed Queenie in the face. Family members later surrendered Queenie out of concern for the dog's safety.

Authorities said Brown also assaulted and threatened to kill a stranger at the Fort Totten Metro station, leading to assault and threats charges. Prosecutors said he later failed to appear in court in that case.

In a separate incident, Brown drove while intoxicated and crashed into another vehicle, sending the other driver to the hospital, according to prosecutors.

Brown pleaded guilty Aug. 27 to one count of felony cruelty to animals, one count of misdemeanor threats, one count of misdemeanor assault, one count of violating the Bail Reform Act and one count of misdemeanor driving under the influence.

Judge Deborah Israel sentenced Brown to two years and nine months in prison, with two years and three months suspended. That leaves an active sentence of six months.

"This is an unacceptable sentence for such horrific conduct," Jeanine Ferris Pirro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, said in a statement criticizing the one-year maximum penalty for felony animal cruelty under D.C. law.
