FBI links record $6.3 billion Binance crypto theft to North Korea
Investing.com --The FBI has accused North Korea of orchestrating the $6.3 billion cryptocurrency hack targeting Binance, identifying a state-linked hacking group responsible for previous major crypto thefts as the perpetrators.
The agency said Saturday that the North Korean hacking unit known as TraderTraitor was responsible for the attack, which ranks as the largest cryptocurrency theft on record.
The FBI, working alongside the U.S. Secret Service and the Internal Revenue Service's criminal investigation division, has been tracking movements of the stolen digital assets.
Investigators observed the hackers converting stolen cryptocurrencies primarily into Ethereum, with further laundering expected through decentralized finance platforms and instant cryptocurrency swap services.
The findings mark the first formal attribution of the Binance attack to North Korea following earlier speculation about the country's involvement.
President Donald Trump said Friday that U.S. authorities were investigating whether North Korean hackers were behind the theft.
Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, separately announced Saturday that it had covered approximately 90% of the $6.3 billion stolen in the attack.
The exchange expects to restore customer withdrawals by Sunday as it works to complete recovery efforts.
Binance reiterated that it would absorb the entire financial impact of the breach, promising that customers would not suffer losses from the incident.
The unprecedented theft has raised fresh concerns about security across the cryptocurrency industry as digital asset platforms seek broader institutional and retail adoption.
TraderTraitor has previously been linked to several high-profile cryptocurrency attacks, including the $1.5 billion theft from Bybit in 2025.
North Korean hackers have also been accused of carrying out a separate cryptocurrency theft worth approximately $620 million in 2022.
The FBI's attribution comes amid renewed discussion of potential diplomatic engagement between Washington and Pyongyang.
Trump has recently suggested another meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un could take place this year, although he later expressed uncertainty about whether either side was seeking talks.
