Fmr Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin Ordered Jailed 60 Days
A monthslong standoff over financial disclosures in onetime Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin's post-divorce court case ended Thursday with the Republican former governor behind bars.
Bevin was arrested on a warrant that had been outstanding since June and ordered to serve 60 days in Louisville Metro Corrections for contempt of court, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader . He was also fined $500.
The dispute centers on financial records Bevin was ordered to provide as part of divorce proceedings with his former wife, Glenna Bevin, as well as a request for support involving one of their adopted children.
Glenna Bevin, who filed for divorce in May 2023, turned over her financial information as directed by the court. Bevin did not provide the required documentation detailing his income, bank statements and tax returns, the Herald-Leader reported.
His failure to comply had already landed him in contempt of court in March.
At that point, Bevin told Judge Angela Johnson that he needed additional time to assemble the documents because his income was not reflected through traditional financial paperwork.
Johnson eventually gave Bevin a choice between serving 14 days in jail and paying a $250 fine. He paid the fine and was given a new deadline of June 5 to produce the records.
Bevin's attorney sought to delay that deadline shortly before it arrived, filing an emergency motion asking Johnson for another 10 days.
Johnson refused and issued the warrant on June 5 when the documents were not provided.
The former governor's absences from court also reportedly became an issue during the proceedings.
Bevin missed multiple hearings that required him to appear in person. At another hearing July 28, he tried to participate via Zoom, but Johnson declined to let him do so remotely.
"Mr. Bevin made that decision not to be here, but you know, he's going to pay for it in that he doesn't get to go under oath and present his side of the story," Johnson said.
Bevin had previously offered an unusual explanation for being unable to attend another proceeding in person. Appearing virtually, he said a boulder had fallen on a home he owns in Maine, according to the Herald-Leader.
The June arrest warrant remained unresolved for nearly three months before Bevin was taken into custody on Thursday.
Bevin served one term as Kentucky governor from 2015 through 2019. His arrest and 60-day sentence represent the most serious consequence yet in the protracted fight over the financial disclosures.
