Hair Mousse Recall: FDA Issues Update on More Than 72,000 Cans

The right hair care product can transform your 'do from flop to fab, but this week the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is once again reminding the public of a popular brand's voluntary product recall and apparent safety concern.

As we've previously reported , last month the FDA alerted consumers that cans of Schwarzkopf Professional Osis Grip Mousse had been recalled due to "a potential packaging issue in which product could leak from the package under pressure, which creates a risk of explosion." As of the August 11 report, the FDA was aware of one customer complaint and two salon reports. The retail customer said the explosion had enough force to bruise their hand.

Now, in a September 2 update, the agency has updated several details, including the risk level.

What's changed?

In the latest report , the FDA says this particular recall has now been identified as a Class II event. This means experts have determined the affected product "may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects."

Additionally, we now know the scope of the recall effort, as a total of 72,705 units are reportedly affected.

The distribution list seems to have expanded slightly as well. Previously, only 12 states were mentioned: Alaska, Arizona, California, Florida, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, and Washington. However, New York, West Virginia, and the country of Trinidad have now joined the list.

As far as refunds, the previous FDA announcement stated that: "As part of Schwarzkopf Professional's commitment to consumers, those who have purchased the applicable Schwarzkopf Professional Osis Grip 6.76 fl. Oz/200ml are encouraged to return them to their place of purchase for a full refund."
