Woman Accused of Leaving 5 Children in ‘Deplorable’ Conditions in a Home that Reeked of Urine

A woman in Kentucky is facing charges for leaving her five children alone in unsanitary conditions without any food.
Desiree Pohlmannwas arrested on Wednesday, September 2, and charged with five counts of endangering the welfare of a child and criminal abuse in the second degree of a child aged 12 or under after a neighbor called police to check on the house out of concern for the kids' safety.
According to WHAS , when officers first approached the house, the smell of human and dog urine was so pungent that it could be smelled from outside the house. Inside, they found the five children, ranging in age from 9 years old to 7 months old, living among human and animal waste. There was no working air conditioner in the home and the only food was old and moldy.
Pohlmann, 35, had reportedly just gotten back from a trip to Lexington and left the kids with her 76-year-old mother, who Child Protective Services had previously said was unable to properly care for the children.

"Mom had recently gained custody of the children back and they were just in these conditions. I really don't have an explanation for it other than it's terrible and… my heart just bleeds for those children," Lyndon Police Chief Robert Schroeder told WLKY.
The chief called the conditions officers found "deplorable," and said what was "particularly notable was the fact that the children were sleeping on bedding material that they felt had human and animal waste on it and there was, in their words, no food in the house at all."
Schroeder commended the responding officers, explaining that they immediately went and spent their own money on food for the children, who they said ate it very quickly, as if it had been a while since they were fed.
