Classic Houston Beer Loaded With History Is Being Retired Soon

Houston's Saint Arnold Brewing Company is retiring Elissa, its first India pale ale, after 22 years. But the beer hasn't disappeared from store shelves just yet. Co-founder and owner Brock Wagner says the last batch is in the fermenter. Elissa remains available in stores and will be available through the first quarter of 2027. The brewery introduced Elissa in 2004, after installing a reverse osmosis system. That equipment reduced solids in its water, making it better suited for brewing the beer. Wagner says changing tastes and a lack of customers have caught up with Elissa. Its malty character contrasts with drinkers' appetite for bigger hops and juicier flavors. He pointed to the brewery's more West Coast-focused Art Car India pale ale as a lesson learned. Elissa's own recipe paired a malty body with Cascade hops. The beer takes its name from Galveston's historic tall ship Elissa, launched in 1877. The Galveston Historical Foundation purchased the ship in 1975 for $40,000.
