Western Mass. sex offender sent nude photos, videos, to child, feds say
A Chicopee man who is a Level 3 registered sex offender was charged in connection with the transfer of nude photos and videos to a 12-year-old girl, United States Attorney Leah Foley's office said.
Carl Norton Jr., 37, was charged with one count of transferring obscene material to a minor. He was previously arrested on April 11 before he appeared in federal court in Springfield, Foley's office said in a statement on Tuesday. Norton was detained pending a hearing on April 16.
Between February and June 2024, Norton sent several Snapchat messages, images and videos to the girl, Foley's office said. Some of these images and files included adult pornography that appeared to be self-produced.
Norton asked the girl to send him nude photos and videos of herself and asked several times to meet her, the statement read. He would offer to pay for her travel and arrange hotel rooms. In their correspondence, Norton described sexual acts in explicit detail, acts that they would both engage in when they met.
Norton was previously convicted for attempted rape of a minor and unlawful contact with a minor, Foley's office said.
The charge of transferring obscene material to a minor provides for a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.
