This is where Worcester’s school superintendent will work next
Worcester Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Rachel H. Monárrez has been named as the new superintendent for Orange Unified School District in California.
The Orange Unified Board of Education announced on April 24 that Monárrez will be that district's new superintendent. Her appointment is anticipated to be formally approved at the next board meeting on May 7.
Orange Unified School District, or OUSD, is located in Orange County, California and educates approximately 26,000 preschool through 12th grade students in the cities of Orange, Villa Park, Anaheim, Garden Grove, Santa Ana, and unincorporated county areas, according to OUSD's website .
"We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Monárrez into the Orange Unified family," said OUSD Board President Kris Erickson in a press release that featured the announcement. "Her proven track record of fostering inclusive, high-achieving school communities aligns perfectly with our district's mission and values. We look forward to a bright future under Dr. Monárrez's leadership, united in our mission to empower every student to thrive."
Monárrez announced this month she would be stepping down in June, ending a three-year run as superintendent for Worcester Public Schools. If the contract with OUSD is approved, Monárrez will officially start her role as superintendent on July 1, according to OUSD's announcement.
"I am grateful to the OUSD Board of Education for the opportunity to lead this phenomenal community," Monárrez said in a press release with the announcement. "I look forward to meeting our scholars, staff, and families, and learning about the amazing opportunities available throughout Orange Unified. Together we will continue to inspire our learners of today to be purposeful leaders of tomorrow!"
When she announced her intention to step down as Worcester's school superintendent, Monárrez said her husband, Jesus, is retired and that she and her husband will spend more time together with their family and friends in their home state of California.
"I am committed to ensuring a smooth transition," she said. "I am confident that the momentum we have built together will carry Worcester Public Schools forward to even greater success."
Following her announcement, Worcester Mayor and School Committee Chairman Joseph Petty thanked Monárrez.
"Superintendent Monárrez's vision for our scholars and her awareness of how to make schools better has brought the Worcester Public Schools to the next level," Petty said. "Her genuine disposition and brilliant mind have made me feel confident in anything she has ever had to say."
