Greek university vets students' glasses to prevent AI exam fraud

A Greek mathematics professor at the University of Patras has stipulated that students must present a medical certificate if they require glasses when sitting examinations in September.
The requirement is aimed at preventing academic tests from becoming a "festival of artificial intelligence" and to stop candidates from cheating using AI-enabled glasses, the Patras-based online platform thebest.gr reported on Friday.
Furthermore, students are only allowed to bring a pencil into the exam, the report added - presumably to ensure that no other technology was hidden in pencil cases or similar items, Greek media speculate.
AI also as a guard against cheating
The university's rector also urged students to rely on honest study to get their grades.
Cheating has always gone on, Christos Bouras told the Peloponnisos newspaper. However, he noted that AI can now help to identify suspicious exam papers. Some students waste their time trying to cheat instead of putting their energy into studying, said the rector.
"This will come back to haunt them later in their professional lives," warned Bouras.
