Woman Found Dead in Garbage Bag Still Unidentified a Week After Body Was Discovered
Authorities are withholding the woman’s cause of death, citing “investigative reasons”

British police are still attempting to identify a dead woman whose body was found in a garbage bag a week ago.
On Friday, Aug. 28, at 5:25 p.m., officers responded after a citizen found the black garbage bag near the bushes in Stanley Park, Liverpool, northwest England, according to a Merseyside police press release .
After attending the scene, police discovered the body of a woman inside the bag, believed to have been there for several weeks. The BBC reported that the body was found near the Isla Gladstone Conservatory.

The woman was described in the release as White, around 70 years old, 5 feet and 2 inches tall, with strawberry blonde hair.
She was wearing a simple pink Nike T-shirt with a black Swoosh logo.
Authorities confirmed that an autopsy has taken place, but said the woman's cause of death is being "withheld for investigative reasons."
After forensic testing, Merseyside police said they have not been able to find the woman's DNA on the U.K. national database and stated that it has not been possible to review dental records.

In the week since they found her body, officers have been given over 40 potential names for the woman and collected information from more than 120 witnesses, according to the release.
Police have been reviewing surveillance footage, examining missing persons reports and contacting potential witnesses. Detectives have also spoken to "hundreds more people in house-to-house enquiries," the release states.

"We are determined to find out who the woman is, uncover what happened to her, and ensure those responsible are held accountable," Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector John Fitzgerald said. "We will continue to keep the public updated with any significant developments as the investigation progresses."
Fitzgerald added that "every call, message and piece of information" could prove "vital" in helping officers find "the person responsible for this woman's death."
Merseyside police told PEOPLE there were no updates and that they are continuing to appeal for the public's help in the case.
