Elon Musk doubles down on dangers of AI at OpenAI trial

Elon Musk’s testimony in his case against OpenAI has taken an interesting turn as the billionaire once again spoke about the threat AI poses to humanity (via Firstpost ). He told the jury that his concerns about AI are not new. Instead, they date back decades, when it was not a concern among the general public. “I had many dinners with many people talking about AI safety,” he said. He also added that Sam Altman was only part of those conversations.

Musk claimed that he had also spoken of his concerns about AI with former US president Barack Obama. “There is no agreement to limit AI, and so there is currently an AI acceleration that’s happening very quickly with a number of companies, primarily in the US and with China,” the Tesla founder said.

He further described AI as a “double-edged sword.” Reflecting on the advancements of AI, he said that it could “solve all the diseases and make everyone prosperous, or it could kill us all.” According to the New York Times , he added, “We don’t want to have a Terminator outcome. We want to be in a Gene Roddenberry outcome, like Star Trek. Not so much a James Cameron movie like Terminator.”

Of his own startup, SpaceX, Musk said it was: “Life insurance for life as we know it.” He claimed that the goal of his other startup, Neuralink, is “AI safety.” He explained, If we can achieve an A.I.-human symbiosis, we can achieve an A.I. that is better for humanity.
