Farmers struggling as aid package stalls in House

( NewsNation ) — American farmers are bracing for more uncertainty as infighting between House Republicans stalls the farm bill.

Lawmakers pushed back a final vote over disagreements on ethanol policy and spending. That leaves key support programs and price protections for farmers in limbo at a time producers say they need long-term certainty.

John Boyd Jr., a fourth-generation farmer and president of the National Black Farmers Association, tells “Morning in America” that farmers are being hit with unexpected costs this planting season.

“We are faced with high input costs right now, with the high cost of fertilizer, the high cost of diesel fuel hovering around $6 a gallon. That’s $600 a fill-up for my tractor,” Boyd said. “To sit here and have Congress say, ‘You know what, we’re not going to come up with a farm bill again,’ is really another slap in the face for America’s farmers.”

He says Black farmers within his organization have increasingly felt the financial strain.

“Our population have been dealt a whole lot of cuts from the administration,” he said. “We have 200 Hena, 200 farmers in our organization that have received loan acceleration foreclosure letters from USDA and denied loan servicing.”

Boyd says communication from the Trump administration on the issue has only resulted in a few exchanges via email and phone.

“We need interaction with the administration, so I can tell them the conditions of our members,” he said. “We have generational farmers losing their farms. I had a farmer call me on Monday, said, ‘Hey, Boyd, my mom is buried out in the backyard, man, can you help me? Please save my house and family cemetery?’”
