High School Teacher and Track Coach Who Also Served in the Army National Guard Dies in Tragic Crash

A Minnesota high school track coach was killed over the weekend in a single-vehicle crash, officials said.

The incident occurred on Sunday, April 26, at about 12:40 p.m. local time, on northbound Highway 169 near Highway 62 in Edina, according to a report by the Minnesota State Patrol (MSP)

They said a vehicle, driven by Ryan Michael Eiler, abruptly swerved to the left and struck a cement median barrier.

Eiler, 32, of Champlin, was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center where he died, the MSP report stated.

Authorities said Eiler wore his seatbelt and alcohol is not suspected in the crash. No further information was offered on what caused the incident.

Eiler was a health and physical education teacher at the Academies of Shakopee since 2021, said Shakopee Public Schools in a Monday, April 27, social media post acknowledging his passing. The district added that Eiler became an assistant coach for the boys' sprint team.

Eiler previously ran track at Spring Lake Park High School in the early 2010s, the Star Tribune reported.

“In addition to his work in Shakopee, Mr. Eiler was an active member of the Army National Guard,” said Shakopee Public Schools, which also noted that he graduated from the University of St. Thomas and the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.

“Support staff and members of the District Crisis & Safety Committee will be onsite at the High School throughout the week,” the district stated. “Resources will be available for students and families in addition to support provided by school counselors, school psychologists and administration.”
