Man accused of killing Chicago police officer to be held until trial
( NewsNation ) — A judge ruled a man accused of shooting two Chicago police officers , one of whom died, will be held behind bars pending trial.
Alphanso Talley appeared in court Thursday to face a judge after being accused of killing Chicago police officer John Bartholomew.
“No conditions that I impose will keep the community safe from you,” the judge told Talley.

Talley was scolded for speaking and laughing during the hearing, during which prosecutors laid out the evidence against him.
Members of his family were present in court to support him, as were police officers and Bartholomew’s widow.
One woman, Faith, who told NewsNation she was Talley’s stepsister, expressed doubts about the case.
“He would never, ever, ever, ever do something like this ever, in the right state of mind, period. He was not in the right state of mind, and the story doesn’t add up,” she said.
The case has raised questions about why Talley was on the street at all, as a repeat, violent offender.
Talley had a pending arrest warrant for carjacking and armed robbery before Saturday’s shooting. He had been arrested for an armed robbery earlier that day and was taken by the officers to Swedish Hospital, which is where the shooting occurred .

Talley, 26, has been charged with seven felonies since 2017 and had been released on electronic monitoring for his previous crimes, which he violated by cutting off his ankle monitor.
Some have questioned the Illinois SAFE-T Act, which eliminates cash bail.
Under the act, however, judges still have discretion to hold accused individuals pending trial if they believe there is a threat to the community.
“We need to keep these violent offenders in prison, and in Cook County jail, or whatever county in the state, not let them out on the street, give them the benefit of the doubt, where they can keep terrorizing more an dmore people,” said Fraternal Order of Police President John Catanzara Jr. “One is enough, we keep talking about one is enough when we talk about a police officer invovled shooting, one is too many. What about one police officer being murdered? It’s never too many. We are f***ing sacrificial lambs for the politicians in this state, and it has to stop.”
