Andy Elliott, Acting South West Superintendent for the WA Police Force, told the ABC that attempts were made to save the man, who had “limited swimming abilities.”
People also tried to get a flotation device to him, but "were unsuccessful," Elliott said, per the outlet.
Injidup Natural Spa, a natural rock pool, is popular with both tourists and locals, a description on Australia’s South West website states.
Superintendent Elliott urged the public to take notice of any warning signs following the tragedy, per the ABC. The outlet noted that warning signs about the dangers of walking along the rocks were in place at the location.
"I don't know if signs weren't read or weren't noticed," Elliott said, according to the ABC.
"It's a very sad day for the friends and family of the tourists, but also for the witnesses and the first responders,” the officer added, per the outlet.
This is not the first tragedy that has struck the scenic destination. In 2020, a 23-year-old woman died after being swept off the rocks into the water, and in 2016, a 25-year-old man, Matthias Bache, disappeared after jumping off rocks into the ocean at the location, according to 9News.
PEOPLE has contacted Western Australia Police Force for additional information, but didn't immediately receive a response.
