Exploring the Pikes Peak area...

Pikes Peak
is perhaps the most famous mountain in Colorado
with Garden of the Gods as its gateway from the east. Zebulon Pike first
saw the peak and noted it in his journals in 1806. By 1858 the expression
"Pikes Peak or Bust" was the slogan of wagon trains heading
west to find their fortunes. By the 1870's, and the arrival of the Denver
and Rio Grande Railroad, William Palmer (founder of Colorado Springs)
and Dr. Bell (founder of Manitou Springs) promoted the area to attract
new residents and visitors.

Garden of the Gods
is a 1300 acre city park with areas to
picnic, hike, bike, climb or horse back ride. A visitors and interpretive
center on the east side of the park is easily accessible from Colorado
Springs which describes the geology and history of the park. Garden of
the Gods frames Pikes Peak from Colorado Springs and is also the gateway
to Manitou Springs which sits at the base of Pikes Peak.

Cog Railway
is named a "COG" train because of
its unique double rack rail system. Visitors to the Colorado Springs area
have been riding the train since 1891, all trains leave from the historic
train station in Manitou Springs. Modern swiss built trains run from April
through December for a 3 hour round trip to the top of Pikes Peak. At
certain times of the year vintage trains also run on special excursions.

Rather innocently, she discovered gold. After having lunch one day, her
son pointed out a herd of elk, while viewing them she spotted gold in
