Confirmation

Confirmation is a public rite of the Church preceded by a period of instruction designed to help baptized Christians identify with the life and mission of the Christian community.  Prior to admission to the Eucharist, it is necessary to be instructed in the Christian faith (1 Cor. 11:28). The rite of confirmation provides an opportunity for the individual Christian, relying on God’s promise given in Holy Baptism, to make a personal public confession of the faith and a lifelong pledge of fidelity to Christ.  An Explanation of Luther’s Small Catechism, copyright 1991, Concordia Publishing House.

Confirmation classes consist of a 2-year instruction program for baptized youth that is traditionally started in 7th grade.  Luther’s Small Catechism is the primary text for the instruction. Upon satisfactory completion of the course, and a demonstration of the pupil’s knowledge, the Rite of Confirmation is held and the youth is accepted as a full member.

As a precursor to confirmation, Ascension also offers pre-confirmation classes children in 3rd through 6th grades.

Pre-confirmation and confirmation classes supplement and complement Sunday school, providing a solid religious education in preparation for the Rite of Confirmation.

Pre-confirmation and confirmation classes are held during the school year as part of Wednesday Night Live.  Classes meet from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
