David Fisher : Dynamic Architecture - The Vision (2008). "Since the dawn of humanity man has seeked to exceed the limits of previous generations. The achievement of new limits in Architecture has been written in history as a reminder to new generations: humanity has to pursue virtue and knowledge. New limits and prospects are now opened: buildings are now able to change their shape and be part of environment. This is the era of Dynamic Architecture" David Fisher Architect (Florence - Italy). Dynamic space - The birth of the idea. The idea was somehow part of my architectural beliefs following years of research on technology of construction, human and social aspects. "Architecture part of nature" is a concept that I always carried with me: Buildings that adjust to life, to our needs, to our moods. The inspiration, however, arrived at a precise moment in December 2004, when I was watching the view from the Olympic Tower in NYC, on 51st

High Hopes Riding on Jakarta’s Airport

Indonesia is working on an ambitious upgrade of Jakarta’s long-maligned international airport. But there are doubts that the expansion will turn Jakarta into Asia’s newest travel hub. The $1.5 billion upgrade—the most extensive since Jakarta’s airport was opened in 1985—is part of the government’s broader drive to overhaul Indonesia’s dilapidated infrastructure. Improvements to the country’s roads, airports and sea ports are considered crucial to maintaining growth in Southeast Asia’s biggest economy. But leaders have largely failed to get projects off the ground in recent years, leading to increasing frustration among residents and investors who worry Indonesia isn’t serious about pushing through needed changes. Indonesia has finally embarked on an ambitious upgrade of Jakarta’s long-maligned international airport. Experts say the expansion–while cert

3-D Printing for Automated Home Construction?
By:
Z Kamin

Science and technology buffs are abuzz about the latest video presentation by USC professor Behrokh Khoshnevis. At an April 2012 TEDx event, Khoshenevis demonstrated how an entire house could theoretically be built in 24 hours using a giant 3-D printer. Don't hang up your tool belt just yet though. Robotic construction has been in the news for over a decade, and about all we have to show for it are the same short walls and little domes. Still, given the pace of innovation in 3-D printing technology, an automated building application should not be dismissed entirely as science fiction. 3-D printing produces physical objects from computer designs. It has influenced manufacturing in the automotive, medical, aerospace, jewelry, and eyewear industries to name just a few. 3-D printing is an "additive" fabrication process as opposed to the traditional "subtractive" one. Plastic, metallic, or ceramic composites are laid down by high-tech nozzle

A Sense of Purpose Mathematics and Performance in Environmental Design

(Sumber : dari buku "MATHE+MATICS OF SPACE", baca bukunya, klik disini) Specialist Modelling Group, Foster + Partners. Close-up of the angular variation of the louvres, as seen from different viewpoints Mathematics in design is most often associated with its visual manifestation in geometrical surfaces and elements. The finely tuned ambient qualities of a space, necessary for environmental performance, may not be so apparent, but can involve the application of many branches of mathematics. Martha Tsigkari, Adam Davis and Francis Aish of Foster + Partners’ Specialist Modelling Group bring this to the fore by describing how at Al Raha Beach development in Abu Dhabi and the City of Justice in Madrid environmental considerations were interpreted through analytical numerical data. Discussions of mathematics in architecture often concern the perception of numeric and geometric relationships as embodied in patterns of structure and material. A similar dialogue w

Transparent House The Crescent Moon Tower is the architectural design project submitted to the 11th ThyssenKrup Elevator Architecture Award by the California-based firm Transparent House. In response to the challenge to design a tall emblem structure for Za’abeel Park, one that should signify the modern face of Dubai, Transparent House chose a larger than life crescent shape that has a two-fold statement. First it boldly identifies Dubai as part of the Islamic world, and second, because of the technical difficulty of building such a structure, it proclaims Dubai’s advanced level of technical and economic development. The Crescent Moon Tower is designed to accommodate a children’s library Resource : Kuwait Art & Architecture

What defines a model school? If such a paradigm exists, design would number among the prime factors. Striving for realistic solutions to existing problems such as dated facilities, overcrowding, rising costs, and stringent budgets, many public and private institutions are embracing proactive, holistic reforms that integrate innovative teaching methods with more effective learning environments. Increasingly, insightful teams of administrators, educators, and parents are collaborating with architects to reimagine the schoolhouse. The goal: to create buildings that will engage students, welcome the community, and adapt to the inevitable shifts in population and pedagogy. The planning committees of the schools that follow all aim to exemplify change through design, in each case inviti

Lyon-Satolas Airport Railway Station

Calatrava's expressive railway station hall is built astride an existing TGV (high-speed train) track adjacent to Lyon airport. It provides a TGV station for the airport, but also a connection point for both TGV and airplanes into the regional road and rail system.
The building's most striking profile, based on two converging steel arches 120 meters long and 40 meters high. The building is most obviously expressive of a bird, symbolizing flight with even more dynamism than Saarinen's TWA terminal in New York, the two main arches coming together at the bird's beak. Calatrava insists this was not its origin: "I never thought of a bird, but more of the research that I am sometimes pretentious enough to call sculpture" - which is inspi

(Resource video : http://www.youtube.com/user/CorningIncorporated) Robots to help feed you, keep you safe, brush your teeth? Fat chance. In the near future, your home itself is that robot. Rosie from "The Jetsons" had better look for a new job. New research from businesses, corporations, and schools suggests that in the not-too-distant future, the digital home will adjust itself to meet your needs, provide new forms of surveillance and video communication, and manage energy use more effectively. “The home will sense humans and know our gestures and actions," Jonathan Cluts, the director of consumer prototyping and strategy at Microsoft, told FoxNews.com.
