Fresh air fills your lungs, the smell of wild garlic fills your nostrils and bird song fills your ears. These important habitats are vital places for biodiversity, supporting a wide range of species from birds, bats, fungi, invertebrates and mammals, they act as important carbon sinks, help reduce flood risk and can be great for our own wellbeing. A short walk through a wood can reduce stress, improve mood and boost your immune system. Planting trees and creating more woodlands is therefore often seen as a brilliant thing to do for people and wildlife. Less than 24 hours after we called for any clearance work to be paused at the farm until further dormice surveys could be carried out, contractors came to the farm. Equipped with a new One City Ecological Emergency Strategy and an Ecological Emergency Action Plan the council pledged to "put nature at the heart of decision-making” and address the drastic declines in nature and wildlife seen across the city. Central to the council’s ambitious plan is the goal of having 30% of Bristol’s land managed for the benefit of nature. Avon Wildlife Trust wholeheartedly supports this goal in its own strategy. However, three and a half years after declaring the emergency, the council's conviction is being tested with sensitive wildlife sites being targeted for development.
