There was a collective sense of weariness, and a need for regeneration. Rarely have the green shoots of spring been so eagerly awaited. In fact, there’s no better time to focus on our natural world. Unsurprisingly, Christmas symbolism is full of references to nature. Here’s a handy list of some festive favourites, to help you put wildlife first this year. It’s likely you have a box in your attic full of sparkly Christmas decorations that come out every year. If so, great! Use what you have and don’t throw anything out unless you have to. But, if you want to add something new, make sure you think first. For many people, however, thinking about festive retail opportunities is tinged with guilt. How can the wildlife-lover get through their shopping list and remain true to their principles? The love we feel for trees is one of those things. As National Tree Week approaches, this is a great time of year to reflect on the importance of trees, as well as how we might best protect them. Habitats are degrading and shrinking. Species are declining and even becoming extinct. Pollution is building in our ever-warming seas. The list goes on – and, when it comes to solutions, it’s hard to know where to start. Or as intriguing or charismatic?

Once a common feature of our landscape, beavers were hunted to extinction in the UK 400 years ago. Happily, a series of well-publicised reintroductions have taken place across the country in recent years, and you could say they’ve become wildlife celebrities in their own right. It’s easy to see why – they’re charming, eccentric and skilful. Crucially, they’re great not only for wildlife but for the planet too. Now they’re back, living wild in Avon – and it seems they’re here to stay.
Thu, 30 Sep 2021 12:00:00 +0000 Rebecca Lockwood https://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/rebecca-lockwood/beavers-are-back When the old ways are the best ways https://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/rebecca-lockwood/when-old-ways-are-best-ways Of all the most traditional of countryside activities, scything has to be at the top of the list. This ancient method of cutting meadows is thought to date back to Roman times, and it involves the use of a scythe – a tool consisting of a long, curving blade attached at an angle to a handle, for cutting grass, by hand. The rhythmic movements, the regular swishing sounds and the sight of a single human working in the land without machinery are all very evocative. It seems like a folk memory of our countryside as it once was, before the roar of the motor splintered the silence. But the next ten days aren’t just important – they’ll witness what some would describe as the most crucial community occasion of the year. The Great Big Green Week will take place 18 – 26 September 2021, and is forecast to be the largest celebration of climate action and nature ever seen in the UK. Saturday night is International Bat Night, an annual celebration of one of the most fascinating of our planet’s species. Frequently misunderstood, there’s something magical about these nocturnal creatures and their darting presence in the rising darkness. Whether they’re flitting across woodlands or skimming over a river, it’s a sight that’s captured imaginations for centuries. We bounce from Mother’s Day to Father’s Day, from National Volunteer’s Day to National Almond Buttercrunch Day (yes, really!) But arguably there is none that is more vital to us, to our children - to the future of the planet, even - than National Meadows Day, which falls this year on Saturday 3 July. It takes a little ‘digging’ to find it because it is somewhat hidden, surrounded by the bustle of city life.
