Equipped with a new One City Ecological Emergency Strategy and an Ecological Emergency Action Plan the council pledged to "put nature at the heart of decision-making” and address the drastic declines in nature and wildlife seen across the city. Central to the council’s ambitious plan is the goal of having 30% of Bristol’s land managed for the benefit of nature. Avon Wildlife Trust wholeheartedly supports this goal in its own strategy. However, three and a half years after declaring the emergency, the council's conviction is being tested with sensitive wildlife sites being targeted for development. Avon Wildlife Trust challenges them to live up to their commitment by genuinely putting nature at the heart of the decision-making process. The love we feel for trees is one of those things. As National Tree Week approaches, this is a great time of year to reflect on the importance of trees, as well as how we might best protect them. Fri, 27 Nov 2020 12:00:00 +0000 Ian Jelley https://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/ian-jelley/bringing-wildlife-back What I learnt from Avon Wildlife Trust’s Action for Insects course led by ecologist Matt Collis https://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/ella-trudgeon/what-i-learnt-avon-wildlife-trusts-action-insects-course-led-ecologist-matt From up here, without wings or three sets of legs, insects can seem pretty irrelevant. It’s understandable that we’ve grown a distrust for them: they have a reputation for eating holes in our clothes and stinging our loved ones. We can’t share a moment with a woodlouse in the same sort of way as we can with a fox or an owl. Maybe it’s difficult to see humanity reflected in the unblinking eight eyes of a spider. The buzz of insects, wildflowers brightening up green spaces and the birdsong outside my window, were an essential source of delight and inspiration at a time of unprecedented coronavirus crisis. Extreme weather events are on the increase and the impacts of a warming climate are becoming evident on our beloved wildlife, with some UK species being pushed to the furthest limits of their natural ranges. To tackle a crisis of this scale, it is imperative every tool in the box is used, and this includes the natural solutions offered by our planet. In the announcement, an ‘ecological emergency’ was declared in the city, to help local people recognise how much wildlife Bristol has lost in recent decades, what has caused it, and – most importantly – what can be done about it.
