Wildflowers are blooming and filling our noses with sweet smells; swifts and swallows soar high above us, lifting our spirits with them; and leafy, lush, green trees give us shade from the sun. Well, this weekend we’ve got a challenge for you that could help you do just that. What’s more, you may contribute vital data towards conservation projects at the same time. All you need is your mobile phone. I know many of us did. From large nature reserves through to small pockets of wildness, dens and rope swings have popped up, new paths have been trodden and social media feeds are filled with photos of flowers and landscapes.

If you are one of the people that have started feeding the birds from your balcony, growing wild flowers in your garden, or taking your kids on local walks and bike rides, you’ll know the great feeling that comes from being more connected with the natural world. At times it feels like a whole generation are discovering (or maybe rediscovering) that natural places, however small, can bring peace, solace, freedom and entertainment. The top resolutions are the classics: lose weight; get fit; spend less - and on gloomy January evenings, gyms, swimming pools and running clubs are full of people determinedly focusing on their goals. How about breaking the mould and making a resolution to help wildlife in 2020? If we are going to save environmentalism and the environment, we must also save an endangered indicator species: the child in nature.”

- Richard Louv – Author of ‘Last Child in the Woods’ and ‘Vitamin N’
Thu, 05 Dec 2019 12:00:00 +0000 Freya Morgan https://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/freya-morgan/nature-nurtures Explore autumn treasures with My Wild Child https://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/sarah-mitchell/explore-autumn-treasures-my-wild-child As we enjoy the end of summer we start to get ourselves ready for autumn and what’s in store during this beautiful season. The days are getting shorter but the sun is still bright and the sunsets and colours around us are spectacular. Alongside schools starting again, bags being packed and lots of new material to learn for our young nature lovers, Avon Wildlife Trust’s My Wild Child sessions are starting back up again after the summer holidays for a new year of wildlife and learning in nature. Eels may not be cute or cuddly, but they’ve been the temporary visitors to classrooms in five schools across our region – and a sure hit with the children. Our eels project – called Spawn to be Wild - is in its fifth year and aims to give children a chance to get up close and personal with wildlife and learn how they can play a part in protecting our natural environment.
