We know how little time we have left to fix the climate crisis we as a species have created, and with young people increasingly disconnected from nature, our efforts to involve them in conservation work could not be more important. Across Avon, many of our young people now have a story to tell about their wildlife journey. In the second blog of a series, it’s 17 year-old Emma Revell’s turn to tell her story.
Fri, 25 Jun 2021 12:00:00 +0000 Emma Revell https://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/emma-revell/our-bright-future-emmas-story Our Bright Future - Brad's Story https://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/bradley-ford/our-bright-future-brads-story Historically, most of the volunteers at Avon Wildlife Trust have been adults, giving their time and energy to help wildlife, enriching our work and their lives at the same time. But over the last 5 years, there’s been a shift. As a result of the efforts of the Trust’s Learning Team, people can go on a journey with us that takes them from toddlerhood to their 100th birthday. The Our Bright Future youth project has involved hundreds of young people aged 11 - 24 in the life of the Trust, as well as training them in conservation skills and helping them make friends they’ll keep forever. This is 16 year old Brad’s story.
Tue, 22 Jun 2021 12:00:00 +0000 Bradley Ford https://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/bradley-ford/our-bright-future-brads-story Our Bright Future is Green https://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/danielle-smith/our-bright-future-green The experience of being a teenager or young adult can be confusing and exciting – tumultuous even. Their days are a whirlwind of new passions and knowledge, often setting the course for the rest of their lives. So, our work within the Our Bright Future programme, connecting young people to nature and developing their vital skills and experience for a greener economy, could not have been more vital. From a child’s 11th birthday until they turn 24 years old, they’ve been able to come on a journey with us – and that’s something to celebrate. We split into groups, grabbed trowels and bulbs and set off. Using the light of our torches, we dug up the earth. We then gently placed bulbs into the ground and tucked them in under the soil. In the dark of night, we dotted wildflower plants around the beds and troughs. It’s understandable that we’ve grown a distrust for them: they have a reputation for eating holes in our clothes and stinging our loved ones. We can’t share a moment with a woodlouse in the same sort of way as we can with a fox or an owl. Maybe it’s difficult to see humanity reflected in the unblinking eight eyes of a spider. These budding environmentalists stepped away from their creature comforts to do some work on an overgrown pond in the studio garden which needed a clear out to Morph it into a better habitat for wildlife. This summer, 32 students aged between 14 and 17 years old got to find out as they took part in our Work Experience Programme here at the Avon Wildlife Trust.
