Wildflowers are blooming and filling our noses with sweet smells; swifts and swallows soar high above us, lifting our spirits with them; and leafy, lush, green trees give us shade from the sun.Wed, 03 Aug 2022 12:00:00 +0000Bethan McLatchiehttps://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/bethan-mclatchie/nature-activities-do-your-little-explorers-summerAn update from our four-legged conservation assistants at Folly Farmhttps://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/louise-treneman/update-our-four-legged-conservation-assistants-folly-farmJust before Christmas last year we introduced four Exmoor ponies to our Folly Farm nature reserve in the Chew Valley. The ponies came from the Moorland Mousie Trust, a charity based down on Exmoor who provide a home and future for the excess foals removed from the moor each year during the annual pony herd round up. As part of their work, they provide ponies for conservation grazing on sites across the UK. These ponies are semi-wild, only having been handled a few times to move them off the moor to the Moorland Mouse Trust’s base where they live until they are old enough to go out to grazing sites.Thu, 20 Aug 2020 12:00:00 +0000Louise Trenemanhttps://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/louise-treneman/update-our-four-legged-conservation-assistants-folly-farmThe Great British Snake Offhttps://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/wild-blog/great-british-snakeSnakes are often thought of as exotic creatures to be admired (or avoided) on holidays in hotter countries, but Britain is home to three native species of snake.Thu, 13 Aug 2020 12:00:00 +0000Wild Bloghttps://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/wild-blog/great-british-snakeEnjoying nature this summer with your young nature-lovershttps://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/sarah-mitchell/enjoying-nature-summer-your-young-nature-loversThe wonders of a beautiful spring and summer in bloom seemed so much more magical during lockdown. Grasses punctuated with splashes of colour are growing fast in the long, light days. In turn bees, butterflies and other pollinators abound, feeding on nectar-rich wildflowers. This brings in bats, birds and small mammals, attracted by a living larder of insects and plants, sheltered by the long grasses.Wed, 31 Jul 2019 12:00:00 +0000Elisabeth Winklerhttps://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/elisabeth-winkler/midsummer-meadows-bee-friendly-beautyHornetshttps://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/joe-mcsorley/hornetsIf you happen to find yourself in a woodland on a late summer day with striped sunlight in the glades, then you may be lucky enough to spot our largest native wasp species, the hornet.Wed, 03 Jul 2019 12:00:00 +0000Joe McSorleyhttps://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/joe-mcsorley/hornetsWhat wildlife to watch this spring and summerhttps://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/elisabeth-winkler/what-wildlife-watch-spring-and-summerSpring and summer are full of sight and sounds from the wild.
