Looking out your window at your garden bird feeder, you might notice that there are still plenty of peanuts left. The fat balls remain untouched. The bushes and hedgerows seem silent without the familiar birdsong. Butterflies still flap over the flowerbeds and dragonflies whir over the pond but where’s the robin and the blackbird? Where have all the birds gone?Wed, 16 Aug 2023 12:00:00 +0000George Cookhttps://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/george-cook/where-have-birds-gone-0Swift Awareness Week 2023https://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/george-cook/swift-awareness-week-2023Summer is a brilliant time of year to be outside. Long, warm evenings sat out on the downs with friends. The sound of calling gulls and the excited cheers over a game of spikeball. The smell of suncream and barbeques and the sight of hot air balloons gliding over the city. However, my favourite summer sight is that of my favourite bird in the entire world. A dark blade that cuts through the air, in a flock of a dozen or more, screaming as they go. But I would like to highlight another you might recognise, even if you don’t know the bird.Sat, 02 Jul 2022 12:00:00 +0000George Cookhttps://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/george-cook/appreciating-natures-amazing-aerial-acrobat-swiftBirds of Prey - Call of the Wildhttps://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/george-cook/birds-prey-call-wildA large grey bird flies over my neighbour’s house. “It’s just a pigeon” I think to myself and turn away before something clicks, and I snap my head back. It’s not a pigeon, but a pigeon killer. A sparrowhawk, in fact! I glimpse its reddish belly and long tail just as it disappears over the roof tops. Always double-check a pigeon!Thu, 05 Aug 2021 12:00:00 +0000George Cookhttps://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/george-cook/birds-prey-call-wildSwifts – our aerial summertime visitorshttps://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/kathryn-shatford/swifts-our-aerial-summertime-visitorsIt’s around this time of year you may be lucky enough to spot a common swift; they’re in the UK from April to August for their breeding season.Fri, 29 May 2020 12:00:00 +0000Kathryn Shatfordhttps://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/kathryn-shatford/swifts-our-aerial-summertime-visitors
