I’m Sophie and I coordinate Avon Wildlife Trust’s Young Volunteers. We’ve already had some brilliant adventures since restarting our sessions this summer and I can’t wait to get stuck into our upcoming sessions over autumn. Wildflowers are blooming and filling our noses with sweet smells; swifts and swallows soar high above us, lifting our spirits with them; and leafy, lush, green trees give us shade from the sun. We know how little time we have left to fix the climate crisis we as a species have created, and with young people increasingly disconnected from nature, our efforts to involve them in conservation work could not be more important. Across Avon, many of our young people now have a story to tell about their wildlife journey. In the second blog of a series, it’s 17 year-old Emma Revell’s turn to tell her story.
Fri, 25 Jun 2021 12:00:00 +0000 Emma Revell https://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/emma-revell/our-bright-future-emmas-story Our Bright Future is Green https://www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/blog/danielle-smith/our-bright-future-green The experience of being a teenager or young adult can be confusing and exciting – tumultuous even. Their days are a whirlwind of new passions and knowledge, often setting the course for the rest of their lives. So, our work within the Our Bright Future programme, connecting young people to nature and developing their vital skills and experience for a greener economy, could not have been more vital. From a child’s 11th birthday until they turn 24 years old, they’ve been able to come on a journey with us – and that’s something to celebrate. We split into groups, grabbed trowels and bulbs and set off. Using the light of our torches, we dug up the earth. We then gently placed bulbs into the ground and tucked them in under the soil. In the dark of night, we dotted wildflower plants around the beds and troughs. I know many of us did. From large nature reserves through to small pockets of wildness, dens and rope swings have popped up, new paths have been trodden and social media feeds are filled with photos of flowers and landscapes.

If you are one of the people that have started feeding the birds from your balcony, growing wild flowers in your garden, or taking your kids on local walks and bike rides, you’ll know the great feeling that comes from being more connected with the natural world. At times it feels like a whole generation are discovering (or maybe rediscovering) that natural places, however small, can bring peace, solace, freedom and entertainment.
