Behavioral Competence Inventory (BCI)©
In 1999 Dr. Hartman-Stein developed the Behavioral Competence Inventory (BCI)©, a 106 item caregiver report measure of the breadth of the functional behavioral repertoire of frail adults at risk for dementia. Useful for determining the level of everyday functioning, BCI data can be used to help decide the least restrictive level of care needed in a continuing care retirement community or assisted living facility. Dr. Stein also uses it in her treatment recommendations to guide families regarding services they need for in-home care. The BCI has been instrumental in evaluating an older adult’s capacity in guardianship evaluation cases and in neuropsychological evaluations to guide the clinician when conducting the family or caregiver interview for both challenging behaviors and preserved strengths.

An example of writing from Rob Stein, a participant in the "Reflecting on Nature" Writing Workshop:
"We meet again, sturdy oak. You are a welcome sight. We both have endured the last several months of rain, wind, snow, and man. I admire your sense of purpose, your straight uncomplicated meaning, the feeling of strength you convey, yet so approachable, comforting, and demanding nothing of me.
Your uncomplicated presence brings me peace, a sense that I need to be more like you – less excuses, open, exposed, an honest presence, standing straight, being there for those who choose to be near – yet willing to protect those who are not, not boasting, but demonstrating strength by simply being."
