PHUKET– Police are investigating a serious parasailing accident that occurred on Wednesday afternoon at Kata Beach, leaving a foreign tourist with significant injuries. Local authorities confirmed that a 45-year-old Australian man fell approximately 5 meters (16 feet) into the shallow water after his harness reportedly detached shortly after takeoff.
The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains in stable condition with a fractured leg and internal bruising. Officers have questioned the boat operator and the ground crew to determine if equipment failure or human error caused the fall.
Details of the Incident at Kata Beach
Witnesses at the scene described a chaotic moment as the parasail ascended. According to bystander reports, the parachute appeared to catch a sudden gust of wind before the tourist slipped from the seating harness.
“The boat was accelerating and the man was about the height of a two-story building when he just came loose,” said Somchai Rakdee, a local beach vendor who witnessed the event. “He hit the water hard in the shallow area where the waves break.”
First responders arrived at Kata Beach within minutes. Lifeguards provided initial first aid before an ambulance transported the man to Phuket International Hospital. Medical staff confirmed the injuries are not life-threatening but will require surgery and an extended recovery period.
Police Launch Safety Inspection
The Phuket Provincial Police have intensified their scrutiny of the parasailing company involved. Investigators are focusing on the maintenance records of the equipment and the certifications of the staff on duty.
“We have seized the harness and the parachute for technical examination,” stated Lt. Col. Somsak Boonyarat of the Karon Police Station. “Our primary goal is to ensure that all safety protocols were followed. If we find evidence of negligence, the operators will face legal charges according to Thai maritime law .”
Key areas of the investigation include:
- Equipment Integrity:Checking for frayed ropes, rusted carabiners, or worn fabric on the harnesses.
- Staff Training:Verifying if the crew had the required licenses and emergency response training.
- Weather Conditions:Assessing whether the wind speeds at the time of the flight exceeded safe operating limits.
Impact on Phuket Tourism and Safety Regulations
This accident has reignited a long-standing debate regarding the safety of water sports in Phuket. While the island is a global hub for adventure tourism, occasional accidents have led to calls for stricter enforcement of existing rules.
“Safety must be the number one priority for our tourism industry,” said a spokesperson for the Phuket Tourism Association . “We cannot allow preventable accidents to tarnish the reputation of our beaches. We are cooperating fully with the police to ensure this does not happen again.”
In response to the incident, local authorities have announced a temporary suspension of parasailing activities at Kata Beach. This pause allows for a “safety blitz” where every operator must pass a new round of inspections before they can resume business.
Guidelines for Tourists
Officials are urging visitors to exercise caution when participating in high-risk activities. They recommend that tourists check for valid operating licenses and inspect the gear themselves before agreeing to a flight.
“If the equipment looks old or the staff seems rushed, do not go up,” Lt. Col. Boonyarat advised. “Your safety is worth more than a five-minute view of the coast.”
The investigation is expected to conclude within the next week. Police will then decide whether to file formal charges of “negligence causing bodily harm” against the boat captain or the company owner. For now, the Australian embassy has been notified and is providing consular assistance to the injured man and his family.
