An easy Christmas Crack recipe that you will fall in love with! You have to try it! Every year I get the same request from people that know me – they want Christmas Toffee and they want it by Thanksgiving. Christmas Toffee is a simple holiday recipe to make and it’s so yummy I can’t even describe it. You really need this Christmas Crack recipe in your life, just trust me on it! You can also easily make a Gluten Free Christmas Toffee version by changing out the crackers that you use. Keep reading to find out which ones I recommend  But what is Christmas Crack? Don’t worry, I’m not going to send you to work with a pan of illegal substances. It’s called Christmas Crack because it’s addictive but it’s actually a crunchy toffee layer covered by chocolate.  You can add a lot of different toppings if you want to make it fancy or you can just serve it with plain chocolate. Either way, you’ll still get just as much drool from your friends in family when you share a piece with them.  Making it is so simple you won’t believe it. I’ve made it before in under twenty minutes (by popping it in the freezer for the chocolate to set). To Make Christmas Toffee, also known as Christmas Crack, you’ll need:
  • 1 cup of butter
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 sleeve of Saltine Crackers
  • 1 bag of chocolate chips
  • assorted toppings such as pretzels, nuts or small candies
Start by preheating your oven to 400 degrees.  Next line a sheet pan or jelly roll pan with aluminum foil and then oil the aluminum foil. This step makes clean up a breeze. You will need a pan with sides so a cookie sheet won’t work.  Take your saltine crackers and lay them out in single rows on the bottom of your pan. Sometimes you have to break them in half to fit along the edges. Don’t worry too much about it.  If you want a gluten free Christmas Toffee Recipe, use gluten free crackers for this step. I’ve used the Schar brand Table Crackers before and had great luck.  I did add a dash of salt to the crackers before the next step because that brand of table crack does not have salt on top like traditional saltines. How to make Christmas Crack using saltine crackersNotice that the pans are lined with foil and the saltines are in a single layer. Each pan takes about one sleeve of saltine crackers. In this picture I was doubling the recipe so I had two pans prepared.  Next put 1 cup of butter and 3/4 cup brown sugar into a nonstick pan and bring it to a boil.  You need to stir it constantly so it won’t burn. Stir it until it is well blended and you can no longer see the butter on top. Once it is blended let it boil for 5 minutes while stirring.  Make sure you have the crackers done before you start this step.christmascracktoffeeOnce it’s done it will easily pull away from the sides of the pan when you stir it. christmascrackrecipe2Quickly pour the mixture on top of the crackers. Use a fork to straighten any crackers that float off to the side or to spread the mixture across the top of the crackers. This will be your toffee layer but there’s still a little more magic to be done. Immediately place this pan in the oven for 5 minutes. While the pan is in the oven wash out the pan that you used for the toffee mixture because once it hardens it gets hard. how to make christmas toffeeAfter 5 minutes pull the toffee out of the oven and let it cool for 3-4 minutes. The pan will be extremely hot. After it has cooled slightly, sprinkle the top with chocolate chips. how to make christmas toffee with chocolate chips It’s important for this step that you don’t buy extremely cheap chocolate chips or use old ones. The cheaper varieties are made by using a lot of cocoa butter. This makes them harder to melt. You don’t have to buy the fancy ones, just the normal run of the mill chocolate chips should work. But if they don’t melt, look at the age or brand and try again with a different quality of chocolate.  The chocolate chips should start melting on their own but if they aren’t you can pop them back in the oven for a few minutes. Spread the melted chocolate over the top of the toffee mixture with a knife or offset spatula. christmascracktoffeebarsstep5easycandyAre you getting hungry yet? Me too. Now you have to let the chocolate harden. You can either do this by letting it set out at room temperature (best option) for a few hours or if you’re in a rush you can pop it in the freezer for a few minutes. white chocolate drizzled christmas crack recipeOnce the chocolate is hardened you have several options. Some people like to leave the chocolate plain and serve it as is.  You can also drizzle white chocolate over the top or top it with crushed pretzels, nuts or small candies.  The world is your oyster – go crazy.  When you’re ready to serve you can crack it apart to create different sized pieces of candy, which is great for parties when people may want to choose a bigger or smaller size, or you can cut it with an extremely sharp knife into squares.  Personally I’m partial to breaking it up like a crazy person. christmas crack recipe also known as christmas toffeeHere’s a close up of what it looks like when you bite down into it.
