cereal milk popsicle recipeOur family loves popsicles. The fact that we live in Houston, where it’s hot 10 months out of the year helps out a lot but personally I think if we lived somewhere cold, we would just make hot chocolate flavored popsicles.  Today though I’m going to share with you the recipe for cereal milk popsicles.  Since it gets hot here at 7am during the summer, popsicles would be the perfect breakfast food or snack for our kids who have swim practice at the crack of dawn during the summer months. There’s nothing like handing a sweating, hot and exhausted kid a popsicle as they walk back in the door at 8am after a really hard swim practice.  Think about it. You’d instantly be the cool mom regardless of the style of jeans you wear or color of your minivan. You’re no longer the mom that has a mile long summer reading list for your kids, you’re the mom that served them popsicles made from the yummy milk that has been soaking in cereal.  It’s different and fun and it gets your kids thinking outside of the box.  That’s a win-win situation in my book and let’s be honest, I need all the cool points I can get. recipes made with lucky charms cerealLike most kids, my kids love the marshmallows in Lucky Charms. They’re colorful and fun and somedays, they even eat the cereal part of it as well. So that’s why I decided to grab a box of Lucky Charms ( and Cocoa Puffs ) while I was at Walmart to make popsicles. I added the marshmallows to the actual popsicle for color and fun but the cereal milk I made with all of it. My kids ate the actual cereal part and they have no clue! (insert evil laugh here). I’m just kidding! Actually my kids and I made these together because that’s the great thing about popsicles. They’re easy to make, require no heat, and any age child can easily help. The older children can also help you brainstorm new flavors and mixes. lucky charms marshmallowsMy youngest helped me pick out marshmallows from the cereal while the older two were gone. I kinda wanted to refill the box with the cereal mix without marshmallows and then watch their faces the next morning when they poured their Lucky Charms into the bowls, expecting fun colorful marshmallows.  Then we filled a bowl full of the milk mixture, added the cereal to the mix, put it in the fridge and left to pick up their sisters and run more errands. Yup we just put it in the fridge and forgot about it for awhile. That’s how easy this process is.  When we came home we all put the Lucky Charm marshmallows in the popsicle molds and then poured the milk mixture on top.  And you might notice another yummy flavor we went with as well, Cocoa Puffs. cereal milk popsicle recipeWe froze the popsicles for 4 hours and then they were ready to serve! Lucky Charms popsicles - cereal milk popsicle recipecereal milk popsicle recipe - summer recipe  They are so much fun! It’s the creamy yummy taste of the sweet milk left after a delicious bowl of cereal with a few bits of cereal poking out of the bottom for a splash of color.  I loved the Lucky Charm flavored popsicles. They were sweet and brought back so many memories of childhood. But my favorite were the Cocoa Puff popsicles. Popsicles made with cocoa puffs! Ingredients
  1. 4 Cups whole milk
  2. 1/2 Cup of heavy cream
  3. 1 Tablespoon brown sugar
  4. 2 1/2 cups of cereal of choice
Instructions
  1. Mix 4 cups of whole milk, the heavy cream and brown sugar in a large bowl. Add in the cereal, cover, and place in the refrigerator for at least an hour. Occasionally stir the mixture. The brown sugar will dissolve as it steeps in the refrigerator.
  2. After an hour or two, strain the cereal through a large strainer into another large bowl. Discard the cereal mixture.
  3. Put a handful of cereal in each popsicle mold. Fill the remainder of the mold with the milk from the strained cereal.
  4. Place in freezer for at least 4 hours or until frozen.
Notes
  1. Tip: Fill one of your popsicle molds with liquid and then measure the amount of liquid that one mold requires. Multiply that by the total number of molds you have to figure out how much liquid your popsicle molds require. Edit the ingredient amounts above to produce required amount without making too much.
