IndiGo flight 6E2211 operating from New Delhi to Varanasi Prior was cleared of all passengers prior to departure on Tuesday morning, following the discovery of a bomb threat note in the lavatory by the plane’s pilot. The note, written on tissue paper, contained the message: “bomb blast @30 minutes.”
According to the airline, and all 176 passengers safely disembarked through an emergency door and an alternative flight was arranged for them.
IndiGo stated that they adhered to all required protocols and relocated the aircraft to a secluded area in accordance with the guidelines provided by airport security agencies.
Despite the deployment of a response team, no suspicious items were uncovered on the aircraft.
IndiGo mishap happened amidst intense election campaigning in Varanasi, the electoral district of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where voting is scheduled to take place on June 1 during the seventh and last phase of the national parliamentary election.
Two major opposition politicians – Rahul Gandhi, leader of the Congress party, and Akhilesh Yadav, chief of the Samajwadi Party – are presently conducting their election campaigns in the sacred city.
Just two weeks ago, on May 15, officials discovered a note with the word “bomb” written on it in the restroom of an Air India flight traveling from New Delhi to Vadodara in the state of Gujarat, with the police confirming later that the note was a dud.
Also, earlier this month, around one hundred schools, medical wards, and various public establishments in New Delhi and several other locations, such as Gujarat, were evacuated over bombing threat. The threat was allegedly communicated via email, originating from the address ending with “mail.ru,” linking it to a Russian provider.
After investigating the incident, the Indian Home Ministry labeled it as a “hoax” and advised the public to remain calm, although security measures were heightened in New Delhi in response to the threat.
