KRAKOW, POLAND — A deadly shooting in the heart of one of Europe’s most celebrated historic cities has left five people dead and more than a dozen injured on Saturday afternoon, November 7, 2026.
According to Polish police and international news agencies, a gunman drove into Krakow’s Main Market Square, known locally as Rynek Główny, shortly after 3 p.m. and opened fire on apparently random pedestrians near Sławkowska Street.
Two police officers were among the injured. The suspect was subsequently shot and detained by police near the intersection of Dietla and Stradomska streets and taken to hospital. Authorities are investigating the attack.
The attack occurred at the very heart of Krakow’s tourism industry. The medieval Main Market Square, surrounded by historic buildings, restaurants, cafés and hotels, is home to the famous Cloth Hall and St. Mary’s Basilica.
Part of Krakow’s UNESCO-listed historic center, the square attracts visitors from across Europe, North America and Asia. The city receives millions of tourists annually and is one of Poland’s leading cultural destinations.

The shooting also affected public transportation. Krakow’s municipal authorities reported that a tram on route 1 was fired upon near Plac Wszystkich Świętych, shattering the driver’s cabin window. Neither the driver nor passengers were injured. Magiczny Kraków
Is Poland Still Safe for Tourists?
Mass shootings remain uncommon in Poland, making Saturday’s violence particularly shocking. However, one attack does not establish that Krakow or Poland has become broadly unsafe for visitors.
The immediate concern is security around the historic center, where police operations and emergency investigations may disrupt tourism activities.
Visitors should avoid the affected streets, follow police instructions, and call 112 in an emergency.
Who Was Behind the Shooting, and Why?
The motive remains unknown. Reports indicate that the attacker wore military-style clothing and used a military-type firearm, but this does not establish any military, political, or extremist affiliation.
Police believe the suspect acted alone. No credible evidence has yet established a terrorist connection, foreign involvement, or an organized criminal motive. Any claims circulating online about the attacker’s identity or allegiance should be treated as unverified. AP News+1
Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that investigators were examining the circumstances of the shooting. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński was traveling to Krakow for consultations with security officials.
For Poland’s tourism industry, the immediate priority is the safety of residents and visitors, followed by transparent communication about the investigation and the restoration of normal access to Krakow’s historic center.
