Lufthansa Group Bids for Stake in TAP Air Portugal
The Lufthansa Group has submitted a bid to Portugal's state-owned investment company, Parpública, seeking to acquire an initial minority stake in TAP Air Portugal as part of the airline's privatization process.
The proposed investment aims to establish a long-term partnership designed to support TAP's future while maintaining its role as Portugal's national carrier. Lufthansa Group CEO Carsten Spohr said the company views the move as a natural extension of its long-standing relationship with Portugal and its existing partnership with TAP through the Star Alliance network.
Lufthansa has operated in Portugal for more than 70 years and currently offers 353 weekly flights to and from the country. The group also plans to expand its maintenance operations near Porto, with employment expected to exceed 1,000 people by 2030.
If approved, the partnership could strengthen Lisbon's position as a major transatlantic hub, expanding air connectivity between Europe, Latin America, Africa, and North America while supporting TAP's long-term development.
