New travel restrictions for Hawaii (updated)
- Hawaii has been going through its highest numbers of COVID infection since the begin of the pandemic. This high number is despsite the fact that 60.8% of the State’s population is fully vaccinated.
- Record numbers of domestic visitors arrive every day in the Aloha State, keeping hotels, shops and restaurants full.
- Why would so many people want to visit Hawaii. Even the Hawaii Tourism Authority doesn’t know and keeps quiet, trying to find ways to discourage tourists to travel to the Aloha State.
C OVID infection rates are currently out of control in the US State of Hawaii – and this is worrisome.
“We need to really lower our case counts now through Labor Day, otherwise there will be an unnecessary and tragic loss of life,” Green said in a Facebook and Instagram post this morning.
Lt. Governor Green was echoed by Hawaii Governor David Ige who indicated a re-introduction of restrictions may be in the pipeline. He said an announcement could be made by Friday. E xpected restrictions could lower the number of people allowed to meet, at events, hanging out at beaches, restaurants, and shops.
In the worst scenario, it could force venues to close again.

This is bad news for a booming tourism industry currently in the State. While closed for international travel, domestic tourism has been higher now compared to pre-covid numbers.
Even with the enormous increase in infection numbers, the fatality rate has been low so far.
On Sunday one person died and 437 cases were recorded, and 9 more people were hospitalized bringing the hospitalization count to 2848.
The latest Hawaii COVID-19 vaccine summary says 1,784,678 vaccine doses have been administered through state and federal distribution programs as of Sunday, up 10,118 from Friday. Health officials say that 60.8% of the state’s population is now fully vaccinated, and 68.3% have received at least one dose.
Visitors have to pass the Safe Travel program before being allowed to enter Hawaii.

Appalling these politicians shut down their state while allowing open cockfighting and endless feral cat colonies on all public spaces including colonies of them the main drinking water spigot, public park benches etch Take a look at the Major Health risks of feral cat colonies in warm places with no predators.
So you have exactly the same pattern of infections as Texas which is dramatically different in lockdown and masking– so you think it will make a difference if you start being more restrictive? Maybe someone should understand science. We are on the verge of cancelling a big family trip in January to Hawaii– That would be over 20,000 into the local economy– wonder how many other people are thinking the same thing?
Let’s all come back to the table and decide as a whole to get back to handwashing, and sanitizing but even more so, taking extra precautions and maintaining distance. True to note: get more greens and herbs and spices into diet, get in the sun and exercise. Keep each other in prayers, and let Us turn our lives back to God in full reverence of who He is and ask God who sent His SON JESUS to die for us, to also save us. If we would humble ourselves before Him, turn from our wi led ways and seek His face, then would he hear from heaven and would forgive our sins and heal our lands. Man has a bigger part to play in God’s unity. God bless America~ Hawaii and all parts of the earth.Let’s fight this togetherโ!
Restrictions won’t help. Hawaii was closed for many months and virus still survived. Same as other viruses. Needle or mask won’t prevent you from getting sick, eating healthy and exercising will do a better job… but to be true, your days are numbered by God, Noone can prolong their life. He is sovereign and not even one hair falls from your head without his permission.
Based on the data, it’s my understanding the spike in Covid cases are mainly due to Hawaiian residents traveling and brining it back home.
@ Debby – Stay in America?! Last time I checked, Hawaii is America.
Giliuietta, I wouldn’t recommend coming to Hawai’i at this time. Regardless of whatever restrictions are here in 2 weeks, do you really want to chance having a medical emergency and hope that some poor nurse or doctor who is working their double or triple shift will have time to give you adequate treatment? Things are always crowded when we have high tourist numbers. It can be a real challenge getting into a restaurant allowed 50 percent occupancy. Residents may or may not act nicely to your face but when our children are being hospitalized, the vast majority of us do not want you here taking up our medical resources. I know your trip has been paid for but most airlines are being pretty flexible presently and at least willing to give you future credit. As to your accommodations, you can explain that you are trying to do the right thing by not wanting to tax our resources and see what happens. Please do the right thing and come another time.
Lisa Foster, that is absolutely false. When Hawai’i residents travel out of state we are subject to the same conditions that the tourists are.
As far the virus coming from all of the residents’ travel, how does that even make any sense ? We have many thousands of tourists entering Hawai’i each day. Fewer of us travel than tourists. We need to vaccinate or pre-test or quarantine, just like the tourists. Here’s a hint, when someone starts feeling sick, who is more likely to get tested – the tourists who know that their fun and frolicking just ended, or residents wanting to protect their family and community?
The local government keeps spouting the low stats of tourists getting Covid when they know the truth. They see tourists crowding together all over, giving hotel workers all kinds of attitude about the mask rules. It’s about to bite them in the butt as our hospitals are full on some islands. If you are thinking of visiting, just know this; Tuesday morning the restaurant and bars had 75% occupancy. The governor spoke at 1:30, Restaurants bars, gyms, etc. went to 50% occupancy “Effective immediately”.
Residents know that it wasn’t enough, that more restrictions will be coming quickly.
Just stay in America. Do not come to Hawaii. We had zero covid cases on Kauai and now there are over 50 . America has many beautiful places to explore so do that. Explore the American continent and stay away from our islands. Mahalo
@IslandGirl Are you native Hawaiian? If you are a white occupier of Hawaiian land, your comments are absolutely absurd. Give me a break.
If you do not LIVE on the islands then keep your comments to yourself. While we completely rely on tourism, it’s not worth causing our numbers to increase the way they have. We, on Oahu, are a condensed population and I can assure anyone on the Mainland or people who “think they know” our islands to fact check before you start spitting out your ‘personal’ opinion and lack of information.
The travelers who come here don’t respect our rules. People have stomped vegetation on our beautiful mountains, hiking trails and various waterfalls. Locals circulate pictures all the time of people not respecting our state because they don’t live here. My husband and I have 2 new grandsons on the Mainland, don’t you think we would be jumping on a plane and going to see them IF we thought it was safe?! So, we have stayed HOME and will travel when everything has calmed back down! If locals travel, believe me, we mask. I haven’t heard of any airline allowing people to unmask..??
Just show some respect to the island and practice Aloha!!๐บ๐ค๐ผ
@ J Odgaard…. Your trip to Hawaii would have mattered more to you, or else you would have looked into this properly…
1. Vaccinated trans-pacific travelers from the mainland to Hawaii are NOT required to test as of July 8th.
2. Even if testing was required, there are several VERY good and easy test at home services such as Vault which I have used twice now. This means you don’t have to travel to test in person. I live in remote eastern Oregon and this worked very efficiently.
Plan better! Travel better! ๐
It turns out that the recent uptick in Hawaiian infections, has been caused by Hawaiians going to places like Las Vegas and returning and spreading it in their own local social circles!….. A disturbing fact, no doubt! All tourists arriving on Island have been vaccinated and or tested for covid within 72 hours of arrival…. Tourists obviously feel more comfortable going to a domestic US destination, that until recently seemed to have the covid situation under control…. It is legitimate to blame out of state tourists for crowding and a shortage of rental cars. I hope to visit my friends in Maui after Thanksgiving, assuming that is a better time for tourists to come visit?!
We recently went to Maui and we’re told it’s residents from Hawaii going to Vegas and bringing COVID back not tourists. They are not required to show proof of vaccine like tourists are.
We are leaving for Hawaii on September 9th for 2 weeks , both fully vaccinated..a nervous wreck that we won’t make it in time because of all maybe being lick down again
What are the chances of us not making our trip because of it ?Everything is booked and paid for .
The rePUBElicans totally have our best interest. LOL at anyone who’s making science political, go to Florida with that BS. Aloha!
Our numbers were down when it was mandatory for everyone to get tested regardless if you were vaccinated. Yes its a hassle to get tested 72 hrs before but it worked. If coming to Hawaii is such a requirement for you, its simple to get tested and follow the safety rules when you come. Masks and social distancing are still in place so if you think since your vaccinated you can let down your hair in Hawaii, you’re wrong.
We visited in July. We were all vaccinated and had to test 48 hrs before getting on a plane, with a negative test. I am a nurse at this was my first visit and I had peace of mind that I did not bring the virus with me. Hawaii is Beautiful and I would do it again to keep the native Hawaiians and their family’s safe. Such a wonderful time with so many lovely people. Stay safe Hawaii, I hope to see you again and again!!!
Da best place fo a vacation? Is at ur own home!
We were fully vaccinated and still had to test for covid and be negative to even travel to Hawaii. But I assume if you have covid before it’s detectable and it comes out as negative on test, then the person wouldn’t know & obviously still travel to Hawaii and therefore possibly pass covid to others
Combatcovid.hhs.gov – “Early intervention with monoclonal antibody treatment may reduce the risk of severe illness and hospitalization for people with COVID-19 who are at high risk of developing more serious illness.” Ask your Dr., Spread the word!
You can mark from when people did not have to be tested anymore with the beginning of the outbreak in Hawaii all vaccinated people are not being tested they are bringing it in to Hawaii they all need to be testedThe only people that can come in non tested are vaccinated so a logical conclusion is vaccinated people are carrying and bringing covid into the state non vaccinated people have to be tested before they come in so a logical conclusion is they are not the ones carrying it into Hawaii if they are positive they cannot fly here
Excuse me anti democRAT! Like it or not, all lives matter and if it calls for a lockdown, then so be it!
If you are vaccinated, you do NOT need a covid test, at this point in time. The person who posted that they had to cancel even tho they are vaccinated is incorrect.Democrats are trying to keep you alive. Not kill you. How ridiculous.
These leftist democRATS are determined to kill us with lock downs.
WE CANCELED OUR VISIT TO HAWAII DUE TO THE FACT WE HAD TOHAVE A SPECIAL COVID TEST ONLY FROM TRUSTED PARTNERS WHICH ARE ONLY IN VANCOUVER? NOT SUITABLE FOR PEOPLE LIVING AWAY FROM THERE AS IT HAD TO BE 72 HOURS BEFORE OUR FLIGHT- NOT DOABLE FOR US. BIG DISSAPPOINTMENT AS IT WAS TO CELEBRATE MY 80th. Birthday. MY FRIEND AND I ARE FULLY VACCINATED.
