Fairfax County Public Schools uses a variety of resources to support student learning. In cases where FCPS contracts with a vendor to host student information, FCPS requires that the vendor adhere to the security and privacy requirements specified in a confidentiality agreement included in their contracts. FCPS does not have contracts with every instructional tool vendor.  Many valuable instructional tools are governed by Terms of Service (TOS) and include both free and paid tools. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year require parental consent. 

Listed below are the digital tools that are used in FCPS that require parental approval. Not all tools will be used by every student. The tools have been carefully reviewed to ensure that they align with the FCPS Learning Model and FCPS conducts the same technical evaluations for all products that use student information. These entities may have access to certain information from your child’s education record, necessary to providing their functions, including, but not limited to, directory information as designated in the Fairfax County Public Schools Student Rights and Responsibilities, along with any student work that is created on the respective applications.

For information about the specific tools that will be used by your child, please contact your child’s teachers. You will be notified if additional tools are added to this list and given the opportunity to opt-in to tools that require parental permission. Additionally, FCPS may use digital tools that do not collect, use or share any personal information.

  • Additional Google Service - Google Alerts

    • ES/MS/HS Tool - Google Alerts are a notification service that sends email to subscribers to summarize search activity around specific search terms. Google Alerts send daily, weekly, or monthly activity summaries around any specific search terms, including recent news articles or other web content for which students set up an alert.

  • Additional Google Service - Google Arts and Culture

    • ES/MS/HS Tool - Google Arts & Culture features content from over 2000 leading museums and archives. Google Arts & Culture works with cultural institutions and artists around the world. Together, our mission is to preserve and bring the world’s art and culture online so it’s accessible to anyone, anywhere. Prior to 2022, Google Arts & Culture was on by default for all users. FCPS now has the ability to individually control the availability of this service.

  • Additional Google Service - Google Books

    • ES/MS/HS Tool - Search the full text of books. On Google Books, you can read books and magazines, download them, cite them, and translate them. Some books are provided by publishers, while others are scanned as part of the Library Project.

    • ES/MS/HS Tool - Google Earth allows students to travel the world and explore new places with satellite imagery, 3D terrain and 360˚ Street View perspectives.

    • ES/MS/HS Tool - Applied Digital Skills is now part of the Google for Education Learning Center. Teach and learn practical digital skills needed for the jobs of today and tomorrow with our video lessons that are free of charge.

    • ES/MS/HS Tool - Google Translate instantly translate words, phrases, and web pages between English and over 100 other languages. Prior to 2022, Google Translate was on by default for all users. FCPS now has the ability to individually control the availability of this service.

    • ES/MS/HS Tool - Google Custom Search would allow students to include a search engine on a website they create that would help site visitors find the information they're looking for.

  • Additional Google Service - YouTube

    • ES/MS/HS Tool - YouTube provides access to high quality educational videos that support FCPS instructional programs. With this parent consent, students will be able to log on to YouTube and access educational videos approved by FCPS staff. Additionally YouTube’s Strict Restricted Mode will be enforced which screens out many videos based on YouTube’s automated filter system.
