Attendance Matters, Brookfield Broncos!

Brookfield Families,

Attendance matters, and we want to see our Brookfield Broncos in school each and every day learning, growing, and thriving together. Our students are working incredibly hard and showing so much growth this year, and every school day counts toward their success.

I want to challenge our entire Brookfield Family to strive for strong attendance for the remainder of the school year. Brookfield is a special place, and it feels good when we are all here together working toward the same goals and supporting one another.

I am especially proud of the progress we have made in reducing chronic absenteeism from last year to this year. On this date last year, our chronic absenteeism rate was 15.9%. This year, we have lowered it to 10.2%! That is tremendous progress and a reflection of the commitment of our students, families, and staff.

Now, let’s continue working together to bring that percentage below 8.4% by the end of the school year.Reaching that goal would mean reducing our chronic absenteeism rate by more than 5% from last year to this year.

I believe we can do it!Thank you for your continued partnership and commitment to making every day count for our Brookfield Broncos.

With love and pride,

Principal Hassen

Our Broncos, Our Moments, Our Story

Flipping pancakes and spreading appreciation! 🥞💙 Our admin team loved serving up breakfast treats for our incredible staff during Staff Appreciation Week. Thank you for all you do to make Brookfield such a special place every single day!

A huge THANK YOU to our amazing PTA and to Open Door Presbyterian Church for showering our staff with delicious treats and kindness all throughout Staff Appreciation Week! 💙Your generosity and support made our team feel so appreciated and celebrated. We are so grateful for this wonderful community!

Our kindergarten musicians brought Mrs. Wishy-Washy to life today! 🎶🐷🐮🐥 Students used instruments to add sounds and rhythm to the story, showing off their creativity, teamwork, and musical talents during music class. What a fun way to make stories sing!

A Message from Our Admin Team

Dear Brookfield Families,

We want to take a moment to recognize the incredible hard work and dedication our students and staff have shown over the past several weeks.

Last week, our scholars in grades 3–6 completed their Reading SOL assessments, and this week they are continuing their efforts with the Math SOLs, along with our 5th-grade students taking the Science SOL. We are so proud of the focus, perseverance, and determination our students have demonstrated throughout the testing season. Their commitment to doing their best each day is truly inspiring, and we know they will continue to shine.

We also had the opportunity last week to celebrate our amazing staff during Staff Appreciation Week. Brookfield is fortunate to have such caring, dedicated, and hardworking educators and staff members who give so much of themselves to support our students and families each day. A heartfelt thank you goes out to our PTA and Brookfield families for showering our staff with kindness, appreciation, and generosity throughout the week. Your support means so much and helps make Brookfield such a special community.

This is also a reminder that our final PTA Community Meeting of the school year is tonight at 7 p.m. in the Brookfield cafeteria. We encourage families to join us as we reflect on a wonderful year and look ahead to the exciting events still to come.

Finally, our PTA International Night will take place on Friday, May 15. We hope to see everyone there for an evening of celebration, learning, and community as we honor the many cultures that make Brookfield such a vibrant and welcoming place.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support.

With appreciation,

FCPS Caters to Food Allergies

May is Food Allergy Awareness Month. The FCPS Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) works to ensure every student has access to safe and nutritious school meals. Since 1 in 13 children in the U.S. has a food allergy, FNS works closely with families to provide reasonable meal accommodations for students whose medical needs affect what they can eat at school.

To support students appropriately and safely, families are asked to submit medical documentation to FNS from a U.S. licensed health care provider so we can tailor meals to each child’s needs.

Required Immunizations for Rising 7th and Rising 12th Graders

The following immunizations are required for students entering 7th and 12th grade each school year.

All students entering 7th gradeare required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations prior to the beginning of school: Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap), Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY), and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine

  • To meet the Tdap requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 7 or older.
  • To meet the MenACWY requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 10 or older.
  • To meet the HPV requirement, the vaccination should be given between the ages of 11 to 12 or as early as 9 years old.
    •  As a parent/guardian, you may decide that your child will not receive the HPV vaccination. The school does not require documentation if a parent/guardian elects for their student not to receive the HPV vaccination.

All students entering 12th gradeare to receive two doses of the Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY)prior to the beginning of school. To meet the MenACWY 12th grade requirement, one dose must be administered at age 16 or older.

Parents/guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with your child’s health care provider now to avoid the rush this summer. Please consider getting your child’s immunizations early so that they can attend school in the fall. Summer is a busy time for families and health care providers. As long as your child meets the age requirements listed above, they can be immunized at any time.

Immunization Events for FCPS Students

FCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will provide school-required immunizations and optional flu shots for all FCPS students at no out-of-pocket cost. Multiple events will take place at designated FCPS locations.

Dates will be made available throughout the school year. Parents/guardians may view upcoming events and schedule an appointment for their student . Participation is voluntary. Additional immunization resources are also available.

Our Broncos, Our Moments, Our Story

Our Brookfield Broncos are excited for their Standards of Learning Tests after their first SOL Pep Rally. Our pre-k, kindergarten, first, and second-grade students cheered on our third through sixth-grade students as they entered the gym. In the gym, students heard from our administrators, student speakers, and a  special message  from Heather Victorino, a country artist from Nashville!

Our second graders had an amazing day at Green Spring Gardensin Alexandria!

The students became nature detectives during a scavenger hunt and got a hands-on look at the secret world of pollinators. A huge thanks to the Green Spring staff for making it such an unforgettable day of learning!

Four of our outstanding 5th and 6th-grade students proudly represented our school by sharing their AVID journey with the Chantilly Pyramid Principals and the Region 5 leadership team. Their stories were a powerful reminder that student voice matters; each reflection was filled with growth, determination, and pride. We are incredibly proud of our students for lifting their voices, celebrating their successes, and inspiring everyone in the room.

Brookfield staff joined colleagues from Poplar Tree and Cub Run Elementary Schools for a collaborative AAP Parent Information Night, supporting families as they learned more about the services offered in FCPS. It was a meaningful evening of connection, shared learning, and partnership. We’re grateful for the opportunity to work together in support of our students and community.

Our curious PreK students got a front-row view of progress, peeking out the window as crews poured concrete for our new gym. Their excitement says it all; learning is happening everywhere, even as we watch our school grow. We can’t wait to see this space come to life as our renovation continues!

A Message from Our Admin Team

Dear Brookfield Community,

We are still feeling the excitement from our First Annual SOL Hype Pep Rally, and what an incredible event it was! Our school truly came together in a powerful show of encouragement, pride, and Bronco spirit.

As our 3rd to 6th-grade scholars entered the building, they were welcomed in the most inspiring way. Our 6th-grade teachers created a special path through Broncoville, lined with inspirational signs to set the tone for success. Waiting inside was an unforgettable scene. PreK to 2nd-grade students and staff filled the space with a sea of pom-poms, cheering enthusiastically as our older students made their way into the gym.

Once inside, the energy only grew stronger. Students across grades 3 to 6 cheered one another on, building excitement and confidence for the upcoming SOL assessments. Representatives from each grade level shared heartfelt words of encouragement, and the applause that followed was a true reflection of the support our students have for one another.

One of the highlights of the event was a special message from country singer-songwriter Heather Victorino, all the way from Nashville, Tennessee. Her words of encouragement added an extra layer of inspiration for our students.

Heather Victorino's message is linked here.

Surrounding the gym's perimeter stood the dedicated educators who have supported and guided our students on their learning journeys. Seeing our entire learning community together, filled with smiles, pride, and encouragement, was truly inspiring.

As students exited the gym, the inspiration continued. Hallways were lined with signs featuring uplifting messages illustrated by Ms. Sisler and hung by Ms. Arely, creating a lasting reminder of encouragement as students returned to their classrooms.

There is no doubt that our Broncos are ready to shine.

We also want to celebrate an important accomplishment as a school community. Our current chronic absenteeism rate is 9.4 percent. This is a significant improvement from this time last year, when we were at 15.5 percent. This is a huge celebration for Brookfield. Our students are showing up each day because attendance matters, and it is making a difference. We are proud to share that we are currently below the division’s chronic absenteeism rate. Thank you for your partnership in making daily attendance a priority. Let’s keep up the great work and finish the school year strong.

Our SOL testing schedule for the upcoming week is as follows:

  • Grade 5: Tuesday, May 5
  • Grade 3: Wednesday, May 6
  • Grade 6: Thursday, May 7
  • Grade 4: Friday, May 8

We believe in each and every one of our students. Please help your child prepare by ensuring they get a good night’s sleep, enjoy breakfast available in the cafeteria, and most importantly, believe in themselves and do their very best.

Let’s go, Brookfield!

26-27 Class Placement Family/Parent Input Form

We are already working on our plans for the next school year! Class placements are an essential component of learning and building community. We know that a good teacher-student match and a productive mix of children are ingredients for success, and we carefully consider each child’s strengths and needs during this process. If you have information that you would like us to consider as we determine where to place your child next year, please share your input by responding to this survey. Please do not request specific teachers, as this does not take into account the many variables we must take into consideration. It is far more valuable to share particular academic or behavioral information.

Completion of this form is optional, but must be received by Friday, May 22

All students entering 12th gradeare to receive two doses of the Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY)prior to the beginning of school. To meet the MenACWY 12th grade requirement, one dose must be administered at age 16 or older.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with your child’s health care provider now to avoid the rush this summer. Please consider getting your child’s immunizations early so that they can attend school in the fall. Summer is a busy time for families and healthcare providers.

Parents or guardians may view upcoming events and schedule an appointment for their student . Participation is voluntary. Additional immunization resources are also available.

Our Broncos, Our Moments, Our Story

Voices are rising! Sixth graders from across the county came together for the 2026 6th Grade All-County Choral Festival.

After months of hard work and rehearsals at their elementary schools, these talented students joined a guest conductor for two days of intensive music-making. It all led up to a spectacular concert featuring 10 challenging songs. We are so proud of our Brookfield Broncos!

A Message from Our Admin Team

Dear Brookfield Community,

We have had so many exciting things happening at Brookfield recently! Our students have been engaged in a variety of enriching experiences both in and out of the classroom.

Last week, many of our 6th graders enjoyed a field trip to the Art Museum, and the remaining classes will attend this week. Our MentorWorks students had the opportunity to visit the Udvar-Hazy Center, while our Young Scholars explored the National Museum of the U.S. Army. In addition, our Get to Green Club visited the DC Botanic Garden to extend their learning beyond the classroom walls.

Looking ahead, our 4th graders will soon be traveling to Jamestown, where they will connect their classroom studies to real-world history.

At Brookfield, we strive to provide our students with meaningful learning opportunities both inside the building and beyond, and these experiences are a wonderful reflection of that commitment.

As we move into the coming weeks, our students in grades 3–6 are preparing for the SOL assessments. We are excited to cheer them on as they demonstrate all they have learned throughout the school year. Our teachers and staff have worked diligently to support each student’s growth, and we are incredibly proud of all of our Broncos.

Thank you for your continued support of our school community.

Warm regards,

Lesley Hassen , Principal

April Statewide Election: No School for Students

There will be no school for students on Tuesday, April 21, for the Virginia statewide election. Student activities, athletic practices, and events may proceed as scheduled.

FCPS will offer lunch and a snack at no cost to children aged 18 and under on April 21 at participating schools . The meals must be eaten on site. For more information, visit the FCPS Food and Nutrition Services webpage

Adjusted Elementary Early Release WednesdaysStudents will now have a traditional full day of instruction and be released at the regular dismissal time on April 22 and April 29, which were previously early release Wednesdays for elementary schools.

This adjustment allows our staff to still have dedicated time for planning, collaboration, and professional learning without reducing instructional time on other school days.

Updates to 2026-27 School Year Calendar

The School Board voted to direct the superintendent to designate Veterans Day as a standard instructional day for the 2026-27 school year. Because this day was added, the 2026-27 school year will now end for students on Wednesday, June 16, 2027. Find additional information on BoardDocs . View the updated complete school year calendar on FCPS’ website.

The last day of school for the current school year — Wednesday, June 17, 2026— has not changed.

Support Your Children During Important Spring Assessments

Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and progress assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where they are in their learning.

FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.

Parents and caregivers can help their children perform their best on these tests by reminding them to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and the cell phone policy still applies during testing season.

It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify your student’s school as soon as possible.

Learn more about how to support your child and why test participation matters .

Help FCPS Sustain Excellence: Make Your Voice Heard on the FY 2027 Budget

This includes public budget hearings (April 14-16) and an online survey . Learn how the FCPS budget helps us sustain our excellence .

Resources to Help Infants and Toddlers Meet Milestones

Are you concerned about your infant, toddler, or preschool-aged child’s development? Resources are available if your child exhibits difficulties in one or more of the following areas: communication, fine and/or gross motor skills, self-help skills, problem-solving, and attention skills. Learn more about typical developmental milestones .

The Infant & Toddler Connection of Virginia (ITC) provides evaluations and services for children (0-36 months) who have developmental delays or medical conditions that may affect development. Parents are encouraged to contact ITC at 703-246-7121 to share their concerns.

Early Childhood Child Find is the process of identifying children with potential special education needs between the ages of 20 months and 5 years (children must be two by September 30).

FCPS Early Childhood Identification and Services (ECID&S) offers a free referral process to identify potential developmental delays or disabilities. Special education services are provided for all children who are found eligible through the referral process. Parents are encouraged to call 571-423-4121 with questions.

Car Seat & Booster Safety Reminder

Dear Families,

This is a friendly reminder about car seat and booster seat safety requirements to help keep all children safe while traveling.

In Virginia, the law requires that:

  • Children must ride in a rear-facing car seat until at least age 2(or until they reach the seat’s height/weight limit).
  • Children ride in a forward-facing car seat with a harnessafter outgrowing the rear-facing seat, typically until at least age 4.
  • Children must use a booster seat until at least age 8 oruntil they reach 4 feet 9 inches tall, so the seat belt fits properly.

A seat belt fits correctly when it lies across the upper thighs (not the stomach) and across the chest (not the neck or face). Following these guidelines helps prevent injuries and keeps our students safe every day.

If you have questions or need assistance, feel free to reach out—we are happy to help!

Thank you for your partnership in keeping our children safe.

Our Broncos, Our Moments, Our Story

Spring Sprouts and Blooming Readers made the most of spring break with a week full of fun, learning, and adventure! 🌷📚 Students dove into hands-on activities that sparked curiosity and creativity, all while building their reading skills. One of the highlights was our exciting trip to Frying Pan Farm, where students explored, discovered, and connected their learning to the world around them. What a joyful way to grow and learn together this spring! 🌼🐄

What a colorful celebration of creativity! 🎨 The Chantilly Pyramid Art Show was filled with imagination, talent, and joyful expression from students across our community. From bold brushstrokes to intricate designs, every piece told a story and showcased the incredible artistic spirit of our learners. A huge thank you to Ms. Gong and Ms. McKay, our amazing art teachers, for inspiring our students. We are so grateful for all you do to make creativity shine! ✨

Field Day was a blast from start to finish! ☀️ From high-energy races to team challenges and lots of laughter in between, our students showed off their teamwork, sportsmanship, and school spirit all day long. The smiles say it all, what a fantastic day of fun and fitness! A big thank you to Ms. Barker and Mr. Bernatzky, our incredible PE teachers, for organizing such an exciting event and keeping everyone moving and motivated. We appreciate all you do! 🏃‍♂️🎉

Thank You, Ms. Sisler and Mr. Ramakis

Dear Brookfield Community,

Last week, we celebrated Assistant Principals Week, and I want to take a moment to recognize and honor two truly exceptional leaders, Ms. Sisler and Mr. Ramakis.

If you watched any of the Women’s Final Four, you saw what it looks like when talent, preparation, and relentless determination come together in service of a team. The best teams aren’t just made up of great individual players; they are built on trust, communication, resilience, and a shared commitment to something bigger than themselves. That is exactly what Ms. Sisler and Mr. Ramakis embody every single day at Brookfield.

They are the definition of team. Whether they’re supporting students, problem-solving alongside staff, stepping in wherever needed, or quietly ensuring everything runs smoothly behind the scenes, they lead with purpose and heart. Like the strongest teams on the court, they anticipate needs, lift others up, and stay focused on the goal, even when the game gets tough.

Their work also reflects the spirit of this powerful quote by Brené Brown (included in the image):

“Our job is not to deny the story, but to defy the ending—to rise strong, recognize our story, and rumble with the truth until we get to a place where we think, ‘yes. This is what happened. And I will choose how the story ends.’”

Ms. Sisler and Mr. Ramakis live this out in their leadership. They face challenges head-on, support others through difficult moments, and help shape positive outcomes for our students and staff. They don’t shy away from the hard parts of the work; instead, they lean in, helping our community grow stronger, more reflective, and more united.

I am incredibly grateful for their unwavering commitment to Brookfield and for the way they show up for all of us, every day.

Please join me in celebrating and thanking Ms. Sisler and Mr. Ramakis for all they do! 💙💛

With gratitude,

Principal Hassen

Our Broncos, Our Moments, Our Story

Our kindergarten students read "The Couch Potato," a story about the importance of finding a balance between technology and outdoor, active fun!

Students involved in the  Get 2 Green program  were invited on a field trip to the Botanical Gardens in Washington, D.C.  They learned more about sustainability, crops, and ecosystems.

A Message from Our Admin Team

Dear Brookfield Community,

As we head into Spring Break, we want to take a moment to wish all of our Broncos and their families a safe, restful, and enjoyable week. This is a wonderful time to recharge and spend quality time together.

While you enjoy the break, we encourage our students to keep their minds active, whether it’s reading a good book, practicing math skills in fun ways, or exploring the outdoors. A balance of learning, play, and relaxation will help everyone return refreshed and ready.

When we return, we will officially begin the 4th quarter, the home stretch of the school year. We are excited to continue supporting our Broncos as they finish strong, and we look forward to all the growth and accomplishments still to come.

Please note that the Brookfield main office will be open Monday through Thursday during Spring Break if you need assistance.

Thank you for your continued partnership. Have a wonderful Spring Break, and we’ll see you soon!

Warmly,

FCPS Commitment to Weather Safety

At FCPS, the safety of our students, staff, and visitors is our highest priority — no matter the season. In extreme cold, we monitor National Weather Service (NWS) guidance, adjust outdoor activities, and ensure our buildings are warm and secure. In extreme heat, we modify or cancel outdoor activities, use on-site measurements to guide athletic decisions, and promote hydration and cooling breaks.

FCPS has plans in place to provide guidance during severe weather, including storms, flooding, and tornadoes. Decisions are informed by industry best practices, weather alerts, and a commitment to keeping our school community safe and healthy year-round. Read more about weather safety , including the differences between an advisory, watch, and warning.

Provide the County Government With Feedback on its Budget

Elementary Early Release Wednesday Update for April

Tuesday, April 21, is now a teacher workday and staff development day because of a recently announced special election that will impact all FCPS schools.

Students will now have a traditional full day of instruction and be released at the regular dismissal time on April 22 and April 29, which were previously early release Wednesdays for elementary schools.

This adjustment allows our staff to still have dedicated time for planning, collaboration, and professional learning without reducing instructional time on other school days. Read Dr. Reid’s letter to elementary parents for more details.

Our Broncos, Our Moments, Our Story

Our second-grade students are learning to play volleyball! Students start playing with a lightweight balloon to develop volleyball skills such as tracking the ball, hand-eye coordination, and the fundamental 'ready position'.

Brookfield is Full of Heart Work and Teamwork

Recently, Brookfield’s kitchen gas line required a specialized replacement part, leaving our kitchen without gas for several weeks. Despite this unexpected challenge, our incredible Food and Nutrition Services team worked tirelessly to ensure that our students and staff continued to receive the meals they depend on each day.

Each morning, the team arrived at Brookfield to serve breakfast to our students. After breakfast service, team members traveled to Westfield High School, where they prepared hot meals for Brookfield students. The food was then transported back to Brookfield and served by our staff. Behind the scenes, team members also remained at Brookfield to prepare items for the following day.

The coordination, dedication, and teamwork displayed throughout this process were truly remarkable. Even while juggling multiple locations and responsibilities, our Food and Nutrition Services team carried out their work with positivity and smiles each day.

We are incredibly proud of this team and deeply grateful for their commitment to our school community. We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the Westfield High School staff for welcoming our team and supporting this effort.

Pictured above is our Food and Nutrition Services team after receiving special thank-you baskets from our Region 5 Leadership Team. There is no doubt that Brookfield is full of heart!

We are also happy to share that our kitchen is fully operational again.

A Message from Our Admin Team

Dear Brookfield Community,

As we begin to notice the changing weather and the signs of spring, our school community feels a renewed sense of energy. While the warmer days are certainly exciting, we remain focused on the important work happening at Brookfield: strong academics, meaningful learning, and supporting every student in reaching their full potential.

Our students continue to work hard each day, and we are proud of the effort they are putting into their schoolwork. As we near the end of the third quarter, maintaining focus and strong learning habits is especially important. At Brookfield, we believe that all students can and will learn at high levels, and we are committed to providing the supports necessary for every student to be successful.

An important part of our school culture is The Brookfield Way. We encourage families to talk with their children about what it looks like and sounds like to be respectful, responsible, and ready in all areas of their day, whether in the classroom, the hallways, the cafeteria, the playground, or the bus. Reinforcing these expectations at home helps our students carry them confidently throughout their school day.

Our home-school partnership is essential to student success. We appreciate your continued support in ensuring that students complete their homework each night and read regularly. These daily habits make a meaningful difference in building strong academic skills and confidence.

Let’s keep the strong momentum going as we approach the final weeks of the third quarter. Together, we can continue creating a positive and supportive environment where every Bronco thrives.

Thank you for your partnership and for being such an important part of the Brookfield community.

Warmly,

Lesley Hassen , Principal

Margaret Sisler , Assistant Principal

Anthony Ramakis , Assistant Principal

FCPS’ cell phone policy helps students focus, learn, and engage. When students put their phones away, they have more face-to-face interactionswith their peers and teachers and more opportunities to develop resilience and problem-solving skills. Please remind your child that:

Our Broncos, Our Moments, Our Story

Thank you to King Arthur Baking Company for coming to Brookfield and sharing your "Bake For Good" program with our students. They learned the craft of bread baking from scratch— and the science behind measuring, mixing, and kneading with care.

Before a single note is played, it’s all about the mechanics. Mrs. Seipp shows us that a well-maintained instrument is the key to a great sound. Checking our valves and warming up the brass isn't just a chore—it’s how we ensure we're ready to perform our best.

A Message from Our Admin Team

Dear Brookfield Community,

As we head into the weekend, we hope you’re beginning to feel the hint of warmer weather in the air! A little sunshine seems to lift everyone’s spirits, and we’ve loved seeing that positive energy shining through our school this week.

We are so proud of the way our Broncos continue to show up each day ready to learn, grow, and support one another. As we move into the coming weeks, we ask for your partnership in reminding your children about The Brookfield Way . At Brookfield, we are respectful, responsible, and ready—in every classroom, hallway, playground, cafeteria, and learning space throughout the school day. When our students carry these expectations with them in all environments, our entire community thrives.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support. We are grateful for our Brookfield families and the strong community we build together.

Wishing you a restful, refreshing weekend filled with family time and a bit of that warmer air. We look forward to seeing our Broncos back on Monday, ready to shine!

Warmly,

Lesley Hassen , Principal

Fairfax County Health Department Measles Update

Measles is a highly contagious virus that infects 9 out of 10 people who are exposed, if unvaccinated or not immune. It has been in the news lately due to cases in Northern Virginia and among people who have traveled through local airports.

If your spring break or summer plans include traveling abroad or to an area in the United States with high measles activity, the Fairfax County Health Department encourages you to ensure your family is protected. Children 12 months and older should have 1 or 2 doses before traveling. Depending on your specific travel plans, your health care provider may also advise you to vaccinate infants 6 to 11 months old. Read more about these recommendations .

The National Sleep Foundation’s Sleep Awareness Week is March 8 to 14. The observance highlights the critical link between sleep and health, both physical and mental. Read more about sleep health and sleep strategies you can try at home.

New Visitor Management System

We are excited to announce that our school is now using the new Raptor Visitor Management System (VMS). This upgrade is part of our school’s and FCPS’ ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety and streamlining the process for visitors at our school. The VMS ensures that no visitor is on the sex offender registry.

For most visitors, the user experience will be the same when you check-in at the front office.

But now there is also an app, which can make check-in’s even faster at school. Visitors who choose to download the RaptorSafe App and create a Raptor Passport can pre-verify their information before they get to school. The app will give you a QR code you can use when you check-in at school.

If you have questions or need assistance with the new system, please contact our front office. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our schools safe!

Our Broncos, Our Moments, Our Story

Thank you to all the Brookfield families that joined us for our Literacy Coffee! We had over 90 families in attendance!

Families learned more about our literacy instruction and how to support their child's reading and writing at home. Families also took time to visit their child's classroom!

Caught a sweet moment in the hallway today! One of our FCPS Office of Facilities and Management team members was lending a helping hand when a group of second graders paused to say, “Thank you for helping our school.” Their spontaneous gratitude says so much about the caring community we’re building together. We couldn’t resist capturing the smiles and thumbs up that followed!

A Message from Our Admin Team

Dear Brookfield Community,

Fairfax County Public Schools has announced that schools and offices will be closed tomorrow, February 23, due to weather conditions.

Please continue to monitor FCPS communications and local updates in the coming days.

As a reminder, we will have our scheduled 3-hour early release on Wednesday, February 25. Please plan accordingly for dismissal.

We hope everyone is staying warm and safe during this winter weather. Thank you for your continued partnership and flexibility.

We also want to share an update about our beloved Dance Party Fridays tradition. Our students and staff look forward to this joyful end-of-week celebration, and it has become a special way for us to build community together.

As we enter the month of Ramadan, we want to be mindful and respectful of members of our school community who are observing this important and sacred time. Ramadan is a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and spiritual focus for Muslims around the world. Out of respect for those observing, we will pause playing music for Dance Party Fridays over the next few weeks.

We appreciate your support as we continue to foster an inclusive environment where all students and staff feel seen, valued, and respected. Dance Party Fridays will resume after Ramadan concludes.

Thank you for your understanding and for partnering with us to support our diverse and caring school community.

Warmly,

Lesley Hassen , Principal

Margaret Sisler , Assistant Principal

Our Broncos, Our Moments, Our Story

From the very first day of school to Day 100, our kindergarteners have grown in so many ways. They’ve learned new skills, made new friends, and built strong classroom communities. 100 days down and so much more learning ahead!

What a sweet night of creativity at Cookies and Canvases! 🎨🍪 A huge thank you to our amazing PTA for organizing this special event and to Ms. Katz for guiding our artists step-by-step through their beautiful masterpieces. We loved seeing our community come together for an evening filled with creativity, connection, and fun!

Our kindergarteners had a wonderful day of exploration and discovery at Hidden Oaks Nature Center! 🌿 What a fantastic field trip filled with hands-on learning and curiosity about the natural world. We are so proud of our students — they were respectful, responsible, and ready throughout the trip, and represented Brookfield beautifully. Way to go, kindergarten!

A Message from Our Admin Team

Dear Brookfield Community,

We hope you and your families enjoyed the long weekend and found time to rest and connect. We look forward to welcoming all of our Broncos back to school tomorrow, February 18.

Yesterday, we recognized Presidents Day, a time to honor and remember the birthdays and achievements of our nation’s distinguished leaders and to reflect on the important role of the presidency in shaping our country’s history and development.

Today marks the beginning of the Lunar New Year. Chúc mừng Năm Mới! We extend our warmest wishes for good fortune to those in our community who are celebrating. For many in East and Southeast Asian countries and among Pacific Islander communities, the Lunar New Year is one of the most important holidays of the year, a time centered on family, renewal, luck, and prosperity.

At sundown today, Ramadan begins. Ramadan Mubarak to all who observe. In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year, a time of fasting from dawn to sunset, prayer, charity, reflection, and spiritual growth. Muslims believe it was during this month that the first verses of the Holy Quran were revealed to Prophet Muhammad.

Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent in many Western Christian denominations. It is observed as a holy day of prayer and fasting and marks the beginning of a season of reflection, prayer, fasting, and almsgiving leading up to Easter. We recognize and support those in our community who will be observing.

We are proud of the way our Brookfield community reflects and respects the many cultures and faith traditions represented within it. This spirit of understanding and inclusion strengthens us all.

We are also incredibly proud of the hard work of our students and staff. Many of our students are currently participating in WIDA testing, and we commend them for their diligence, preparation, and perseverance. They have worked extremely hard, and we are confident their efforts will shine through.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support. We are grateful for our Brookfield families and look forward to another wonderful week of learning together.

With Bronco Pride,

Lesley Hassen , Principal

Margaret Sisler , Assistant Principal

Anthony Ramakis , Assistant Principal

Survey on Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) Now Open for All Families and Middle and High School Students

On Monday, all FCPS parents/caregivers and middle and high school students received an email to participate in a voluntary and confidential survey. (Please check your spam folder if you have not received it.)

Questions refer to proposed changes to FCPS’ SR&R document for next year. This document outlines the rules that students are expected to follow, and guidelines for consequences if those expectations are not met. Possible changes include:

  • Universal Discipline:Charts will list consequences and supports for students. They will help ensure that two students of the same grade will be treated fairly and receive the same level of support.
  • Standards for In-School Suspensions of Students with Disabilities:Creating standards for how in-school suspensions are handled for students who have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or a 504 Plan.
  • Accommodations for Multilingual Learner Student Statements:Providing translation accommodations when Multilingual Learner students provide statements about disciplinary incidents.

The survey will be open until Friday, February 20. Survey materials are available online .

Our Broncos, Our Moments, Our Story

This National School Counseling Week, we want to give a massive shout-out to the duo that keeps our students (and staff!) grounded: Mrs. Evans and Ms. Jones.

Red, proud, and heart-healthy! ❤️ Students in Ms. Wang and Ms. Perri’s 2nd grade class celebrate Healthy Heart Month.

A Message from Our Admin Team

Dear Brookfield Community,

Despite the snow, icy conditions, and cold weather this week, we are incredibly proud to share that our attendance remained above 95.5% for most of the week. That is a true testament to the commitment of our students, families, and staff. Thank you for helping our students show up ready to learn—even in challenging conditions.

As we kicked off the third quarter, our students worked hard, demonstrating focus, resilience, and a strong sense of pride in their learning. It has been wonderful to see such positive energy throughout the building as we begin this next chapter of the school year.

We wish everyone a wonderful weekend—whether you’re tuning into the Winter Olympics, watching the Super Bowl, or simply enjoying quality time with family and friends.

We love our Brookfield community and are deeply grateful for your continued partnership and support.

Warm regards,

School is Open Today at 9:55 a.m. - Way to go Brookfield! 🎉 We reached our attendance goal yesterday, and 96% of our students were in attendance. Let's aim for 97% today!

Dear Brookfield Families,

We have something BIGto celebrate! 🎉

On Tuesday, 92% of our students were in attendance. Yesterday, we set a bold goal of reaching above 95%, and our Brookfield community delivered with an incredible 96% attendance! I knew we could do it.

At Brookfield, we believe that all students can and will learn at high levels, and we are committed to providing the supports needed to make that happen. That same belief extends to our community. When we set the bar high, we rise to meet it, and yesterday proved exactly that.

A special shout-out to families who had dental appointments and brought students back to school afterward. That commitment matters so much. Being present truly makes a difference, and it is so important that our students are here each day, learning and growing together.

We recognize the dedication it takes from parents and caregivers, and please know this: we see you, and we are grateful for you. Honestly, our school feels warmer and more complete when our entire family, students, and staff are together in the building.

So… we hit 96%! 💪

Now I challenge our Brookfield community to reach 97% attendance today.

Let’s go, Brookfield! 💙🐾

With pride and gratitude,

Principal Hassen

Dear Brookfield Families,

We were so excited to see our Broncos yesterday! We are proud to share that 92% of our students were in school yesterday. Let's aim for 95% or higher today! I know we can do it together!

Thank you again for your patience as we work through the “snowcrete” and operate on a 2-hour delay again today. We love seeing our Brookfield Broncos back in the building!

It is very important for students to attend school today. Being present helps students stay connected, engaged, and on track with their learning.

If possible, please use the school bus or Kiss & Ride for arrival. If your child walks to school, please use caution, as icy sidewalks in some areas can make walking difficult. Also, please make sure you are using the kiss and ride line. Students should not be dropped off on Lees Corner Road due to safety concerns.FCPS has been working closely with VDOT to clear bus stops and the surrounding areas.

Please continue to remind students that snow and ice must remain on the ground. We cannot pick up or throw snow or ice at cars, buses, houses, people, or even the ground. While it may be tempting, ice can cause serious injury or property damage. This expectation applies at bus stops and when walking to and from school.

Please continue to stay safe and stay warm. We look forward to seeing our students soon! Remember, we are aiming for 95% or higher attendance! I am confident that our Brookfield families can make this happen.

Sincerely,

Principal Hassen

I would also like to extend a huge thank you to our incredible custodians for their tireless work clearing snow and ice from our Brookfield campus this past week. We are also deeply grateful to our Brookfield families and community members who volunteered throughout the neighborhoods. Your support made a real difference, and because of you, we are ready to welcome students back tomorrow.

Please continue to stay safe and stay warm. We look forward to seeing our students soon!

Sincerely,

At the end of the school year, Lesley will be recognized at the FCPS Awards ceremony, and the FCPS Outstanding New Principal will be announced from the 6 region finalists.

Cold days call for warm hearts (and warm food)! Principal Hassen delivered lunch to our hardworking custodial crew. Thank you to Mr. Peter, Ms. Arely, Ms. Edy, and Ms. Reina for all you do to clear the way for our students and staff!

AVID Family Night brought learning to life as families participated in the same AVID structures students use in the classroom. Thank you for joining us—we look forward to more opportunities to connect as we continue promoting college and career readiness.

BINGO Night was a big win! A heartfelt thank-you to our PTA for their time and dedication, and to our school community for making the night so special.

A Message from Our Admin Team

Dear Brookfield Community,

As we navigate the recent cold temperatures and snowy weather, we want to take a moment to share how much we hope all of our Brookfield families have been staying safe, warm, and well. While winter weather can certainly bring challenges, it also offers opportunities for rest, connection, and a little fun. We hope our students have enjoyed some time in the snow, whether building snowmen, sledding, or simply experiencing the joy that comes with a winter day.

At the same time, we know learning doesn’t stop when school is not in session. We are confident that our students have continued to engage in meaningful reading and math activities at home, strengthening important skills and routines. Your support in encouraging learning beyond the school day truly makes a difference, and we are grateful for your continued partnership.

Over the past two days, our teachers and staff have been working diligently behind the scenes. They have participated in professional learning opportunities to continue growing in their practice, completed grades as we bring the quarter to a close, and thoughtfully prepared for our students’ return. Their dedication, collaboration, and commitment to our students are evident every day, and we are incredibly proud of the work they do for the Brookfield community.

There is so much to celebrate at Brookfield. From the resilience of our students to the dedication of our staff and the strength of our family–school partnerships, we are truly fortunate to be part of such a supportive and caring community. Your involvement, encouragement, and trust help create the positive learning environment we strive for each day.

As we look ahead, we are excited to kick off the second half of the school year with renewed energy and focus. We look forward to welcoming our students back, continuing our shared work, and building on the many successes we have already achieved together.

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Kindergarten helps children learn and practice the social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.

Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring. Eligible children can be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps schools prepare and ensure they have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

If your child will attend our school, please gather necessary documents and complete registration forms as soon as possible.

FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, please visit the FCPS Registration webpage .
