Purple Star Designation Award for Chantilly High School
Chantilly High School has been recognized by the Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children for their dedication to helping military-connected students and their families.
“I’m proud of FCPS’ strong partnership with our nation’s military families to help support the more than 13,500 military-connected students enrolled in our schools,” said Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid. Nearly half of Fairfax County public schools, 96, are currently designated as Purple Star Schools. “The Purple Star Designation supports an inclusive and welcoming school culture for all students and families,” she said. “Therefore, it is beneficial for ALL schools to have the designation, no matter what percentage of their student body is military-connected. At FCPS, one of our strengths is our wonderful diversity. We celebrate the unique qualities that each and every student brings to our community.”
“With the help of our Student Ambassadors at schools, military-connected students transitioning to FCPS can feel — really feel — that they belong,” she continued. “And a student who belongs is a student who blooms, socially and academically. These students have much to contribute to our schools and communities by sharing their knowledge, experiences, and friendships. Together, we can support their needs and provide them with a world-class education.”
Student Ambassadors are peer-led transition teams that bring together military and civilian peers to support all student’s transition and connection to school. A peer-led transition team is a requirement for Purple Star Schools.
The Virginia Department of Education shares more information regarding the designation for Purple Star Schools:
The Virginia Purple Star Designation is awarded to military-friendly schools that have demonstrated a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military. Schools that earn the award will receive a special Purple Star recognition to display onsite.
A school will be honored with the Purple Star Award if it completes all the required activities, plus one optional activity. The Virginia Department of Education’s Military Student Support Process Action Team, (MSSPAT) will review all school applications for the award.
