FNL Opportunity for Rising 6th Grade Parents!

We have an opportunity to help fund the 2027 6th Grade carnival, but we need a leader to make it happen!
The Friday Night Live! Glow Stick Program is a great way to make money for next year, but we need a parent (or a small group of friends) to step up and "lead the charge" as coordinator.

The Coordinator’s Role:
●     Organize the Schedule: Build a volunteer calendar for Friday nights (May 22–Sept 4.)They are asking us to send available dates and will coordinate with other participating groups.

●     Recruit Teams: Ensure at least two teams of volunteers are ready for each shift.

●     Low Stress: Friday Night Live provides all the inventory, aprons, and change—you just provide the people!

Dranesville Dragons celebrated friendship, leadership, and community during our Inaugural Special Olympics banquet.

VDOE SPSF Readiness: Every Day Counts at Dranesville Elementary

Day 149 CA rate is 8.3%. Without IPFIT CA rate would be 10.1%. Last year on day 149, our CA rate was 12.0%. In Spring 2024 our CA rate on day 149 was 9.1%.

Based on the Virginia Department of Education’s (VDOE) School Performance and Support Framework, Readinessis a vital component of school success. In elementary schools, Readiness accounts for 10% of a school’s total performance rating. Within that category, student attendance is the primary metric.

Consistent attendance is a critical pillar of Readiness. Research shows that missing as few as two days a month, just 10% of the school year, can significantly impact academic growth. Students who reach this threshold for any reason are considered "chronically absent."

Thank you for your continued partnership and for prioritizing your child’s daily attendance. Every day of school through our last day, June 17th, counts.

Student Journalism Inspired Spirit Day

Dranesville Elementary has a student journalism club for students in grades 5 and 6. This club was created by a group of fifth graders. Although those founding students are now in seventh grade, our journalism club continues to capture and share our stories. This year, a team of third graders has launched a weekly class newsletter. As a result, next school year our journalism club will include students from grades 4 through 6.

Our third graders' latest publication featured a Rainbow Spirit Day for their class on Friday, May 15th. We invite our entire school community to join in, support our youngest journalists, and wear rainbow colors on Friday, May 15.

Dragons Continue to Grow, One Book at a Time

In October, we challenged students to read 6 or 7 books before winter break. Students began reading books, enjoying reading, and growing as readers. Our Dragons continue to grow individually as readers and as a community of readers. On Friday, June 5th, we will celebrate all of our readers who have logged seven or more books. Students may submit a paper or online reading log to join in the glow party.

Virginia Language and Literacy Screening System (VALLSS) Grades Pre K - 3

The Virginia Language & Literacy Screening System (VALLSS) is the state-provided screening tool for Virginia’s Early Intervention Reading Initiative (EIRI). VALLSS assesses critical literacy skills, identifies students at risk for developing reading difficulties and provides instructionally useful information to target instruction. The VALLSS is administered in the fall, winter, and spring each school year.

Standards of Learning Assessment Dates
  • May 5th:5 and 6 Reading ✔️
  • May 7th:3 and 4 Reading ✔️
  • May 12th:5 and 6 Math
  • May 14th:3 and 4 Math
  • May 19th:5th Science

Spring testing season is here! Be sure to put testing dates on your family calendar so you don't forget. 📅

Here are some ways to prepare before a test:

  • Remind your child to get a good night's rest.
  • Make sure your child has a healthy breakfast.
  • Avoid scheduling appointments that would take your child out of school on a testing day.
  • Remind your child that electronic devices are not allowed in testing, unless required by 504 or IEP.

Find out more about the tests at each grade level: https://bit.ly/FCPS-Grade-Tests .

Reporting Preliminary SOL Scores (All)

OSARA and Information Technology (IT) staff are loading preliminary SOL scores for grade 3-8 and end-of-course (EOC) tests into SIS Test History.

  • For SOL grade 3-8 tests, beginning May 6, scores will be visible in SIS ParentVUE, StudentVUE, and TeacherVUE every Wednesday and Friday.
  • For SOL EOC tests, loads occur each Monday and Friday beginning May 1. Each score loaded reflects scores received
  • In the event of an irregularity resulting in a score being removed by VDOE, the central process will remove the score from SIS Test History, so it is no longer reported in the student record.

As a reminder, some SOL forms are not yet equated by VDOE, which means that some scores will be delayed. Score delays are normal and expected for the following:

  • Gr 5 Science
  • Gr 8 Science
  • All EOC tests (including Algebra 1)

Expanding Learning Opportunities for All Students

At Dranesville Elementary School, we're committed to providing every student with the tools and opportunities they need to thrive both during the school year and over the summer.

This summer, all students will be allowed to check out a technology device that will support continued growth.

This will ensure continued access to tools such as ST Math and Benchmark Universe that allow students to work at their own pace and level. Programs like these adapt to each child's needs, providing extra support in areas where they're building skills and advancing them when they're ready for more challenges. This opportunity will allow students to continue their personalized learning at home, to develop digital literacies and important routines around managing their technology.

Please contact our Family Liaison, Paulina Hidalgo at 703-326-5236 if you would like your child to check out their FCPS laptop this summer.

Digital Tools to Support Student Learning

Students have access to a robust suite of digital resources for learning across the content areas. Here is information about resources by grade level that can support learning aligned to the curriculum both in the classroom and at home.

Creatively Building Community

Students continue to learn, grow, and demonstrate their achievements every day. The learning will continue throughout the fourth quarter and into the final days of the school year. Our teachers are building a strong foundation for our students each day. During the first week of June our students will engage in creative problem-solving, collaborative, and career focused experiences. Please stay tuned for opportunities to connect, present, and contribute to these enriching experiences.

Students wore wildlife print on Monday to celebrate Earth Week.

Celebrate #FCPSEarthWeek

Join us in celebrating Earth Week 2026.

  • Wednesday, April 22 – wear green for Earth Day
  • Thursday, April 23 – wear red for Climate Change Day
  • Friday, April 24 – wear blue for Watershed Day

While we show our spirit this week, we also demonstrate that we are global and ethical citizens who care for the world every day. We are grateful for our Get2Green Teacher Leaders, our Get2Green Family Ambassador, and our robust Get2Green team for teaching, modeling, and practicing the daily habits that positively impact our environment and the world. 🌍♻️

To celebrate Earth Week, here are some ways students and families can  learn about energy use and perform an energy audit in your home.

  • Be a Draft Detective:  Hold a small piece of paper (or a "draft detector" made of paper and a paper clip) near window edges or doors to see if it moves. If it does, it can indicate air leaks.
  • Hunt for Phantom Power Use:  Find electronics that are plugged in but not being used. Make a list, then discuss when you can unplug these items to save money and keep your house safe.  Extra credit:  Explain how these "vampire appliances" still use energy.
  • Check Your Lights: Count the number of energy-efficient LED bulbs in your house versus older incandescent bulbs to see where upgrades can be made to save energy and money.
  • Be an Appliance Inspector:  Make a list of every item in the house that uses electricity—from the toaster to the TV—and categorize them by how often they are used.
  • Check Your Temperature:Check thermostat settings. Do you close curtains in the summer to keep the house cool or open them in the winter to let in warm sun?  How do you save energy when the temperature outside is high or low?

Dranesville's chronic absentee rate as of the 136th day of school is 9.5%.

Prioritizing Readiness: Every Day Counts at Dranesville Elementary

Based on the Virginia Department of Education’s (VDOE) School Performance and Support Framework, Readinessis a vital component of school success. In elementary schools, Readiness accounts for 10% of a school’s total performance rating. Within that category, student attendance is the primary metric.

Consistent attendance is a critical pillar of Readiness. Research shows that missing as few as two days a month, just 10% of the school year, can significantly impact academic growth. Students who reach this threshold for any reason are considered "chronically absent."

Our Strategic Approach

At Dranesville Elementary, we believe everyone must work together to ensure students are engaged every day. Over the past three years, we have been intentional about shifting our culture to prioritize attendance by:

  • Thoughtful Scheduling:We align instruction, assessments, field trips, and events to maintain consistent momentum throughout the year.

  • Celebrating Success:We recognize student and class attendance daily, every ten days, and every quarter.

  • Systematic Interventions:When a student is absent, we intervene immediately. These interventions help our staff identify specific barriers to attendance and allow us to partner with families to remove those barriers so students can attend school.

Celebrating Our Progress

Our collective efforts have yielded incredible results. We reduced our chronic absenteeism rate from over 20% in the spring of 2023 to just 6.7% in the spring of 2024.This year, we are on track to meet or exceed those results.

Dranesville demonstrating "Strong Readiness" as measured by the VDOE requires the consistent and collective efforts of every member of our school community.

Our goal is to finish the year with 93% or moreof our students attending and learning every day.

Meeting this goal would mean:

  1. Maintaining a chronic absentee rate of 7% or less.

  2. Earning 9.3 out of 10 pointsin the VDOE School Performance and Support Framework (SPSF).

Thank you for your continued partnership and for prioritizing your child’s daily attendance. Together, we are ensuring the continued success of our students and Dranesville Elementary School.

Finishing Strong in Quarter 4

We have officially kicked off the fourth and final quarter of the school year! It is hard to believe how quickly the time has flown, but our Dragons are entering the home stretch with fire and focus. As of today, our students have just 46 days of learning, growing, and achieving remaining in the 2025-2026 school year.

With fewer than 50 days to go, this is the season when students have the unique opportunity to demonstrate all they have mastered throughout the first three quarters. This is a pivotal time for celebrating our students' learning and honoring the academic milestones they have reached.

We sincerely appreciate your continued partnership in supporting our Dragons. Your dedication to ensuring daily attendance and encouraging student achievement on our Spring assessments makes a vital difference as we finish this year strong together.

Advanced Academic Programs (AAP)
Screening for Subject Specific and Part-Time Services

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners.

Screening for Subject Specific and Part-Time Services

Students can be screened for subject specific and part time AAP services at any time in the school year. In the spring, schools review data on all students to determine services for the start of the next school year.

Parents or guardians can initiate the screening process by submitting the AAP School-Based Services Referral Form to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART) or Assistant Principal by April 15, annually.

The AAP School-Based Services Referral Form may be found at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/academic-overview/advanced-academic-programs-aap/advanced-academic-program-aap-forms or by searching “AAP Forms” at https://www.fcps.edu/.

Parents or guardians who submit a referral will be notified by the local elementary school of their student’s eligibility status by early June.

Screening Process for Subject Specific and Part-Time Services

Multiple criteria are reviewed holistically to determine eligibility for all FCPS advanced academic services. Committees consider student work from opportunities with AAP lessons, examples of student reasoning or gifted behaviors from class discussions and activities, progress reports, achievement and ability scores, and parent or guardian input. Committees consider whether students have access to a group of students with similar academic needs to support academic conversations and growth in the classroom.

Appeals Process for Subject Specific and Part-Time Services

If a parent or guardian wishes to appeal an ineligible decision, they may submit an appeal with new data for consideration by the local school screening committee. This new information should be submitted to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher or Assistant Principal.

Subject Specific and Part-Time Services Overview

Subject Specific and Part-Time Services in Elementary School

FCPS offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in Grades K-12. The continuum of services approach allows for a focus on matching services to students’ needs rather than labeling students. Students have:

Multiple entry points for deeper learning opportunities in specific areas of need as they develop.

A cluster group of students with similar academic needs to support student learning and growth.

Teachers, administrators, and Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of school-based services at the elementary level:

Access to Rigor, Grades K-6

All students have opportunities to think critically, reason, and problem-solve.
- All teachers use critical and creative thinking strategies in their lessons
- Classroom teachers provide opportunities using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework a minimum of once per quarter.
Because Access to Rigor services are for all FCPS students, there is not a screening process.

Subject Specific Advanced Differentiation, Grades K-6

Some students require differentiation beyond the needs of age-level peers in their class in at least one specific subject area. Classroom teachers may adjust instruction for students in these areas by:

Providing different assignments and resources in those subjects,

Grouping students by their strengths, interests, and readiness, and

Providing additional challenges using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework.

Student needs for subject specific differentiation are re-evaluated each year at the local school.

Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-6

Some students have advanced academic abilities in multiple subject areas and require differentiation beyond the needs of age-level peers in their class in multiple content areas.

Students work with other students that have similar academic needs through weekly pull-out classes or weekly co-taught lessons with the AART and classroom teacher.

Teachers provide frequent opportunities to use materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in Language Arts, science, social studies, and/or mathematics.

Part-Time services continue through Grade 6. Students do not need to be evaluated each year.

Screening for Full-Time Services

Screening for Full-Time AAP services happens at the district/central level rather than by local schools. For your planning for next school year, please know that screening for Full-Time services occurs during two specific screening cycles:

Fall screening is available for students who are new to FCPS since January.

Fall referrals are due October 15, annually.

Spring screening is available for any Grade 2-7 FCPS-enrolled student.

The referral window is from the first day of school - December 15, annually.
For more information, please visit the AAP website at: https://www.fcps.edu/registration/advanced-academics-identification-and-placement/current-fcps-students .

Full-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-8

Some advanced learners need a Full-Time advanced academic program with differentiated instruction in all four core content areas (Language Arts, mathematics, social studies, and science).

Students eligible for Full-Time AAP services are cluster grouped on a Full-Time basis and receive:

Full-Time use of materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in Language Arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, and

Curriculum that is differentiated through acceleration, depth, and complexity of content.

Full-Time services continue through Grade 8. Students do not need to be evaluated each year.

Standards of Learning Assessment Dates
  • May 5th:5 and 6 Reading
  • May 7th:3 and 4 Reading
  • May 12th:5 and 6 Math
  • May 14th:3 and 4 Math
  • May 19th:5th Science

The SOL assessment window is from April 27th through June 3rd. Grade level assessments will be administered on the dates noted above. Makeups and retakes will be administered between April 27th and June 3rd.

Dragons Wear Green on March Seventeenth

Attendance Matters

Our students are attending, learning, and growing! This is the season for them to demonstrate their achievement on spring assessments. Thank you for maintaining the habits that nurture daily school attendance, ensuring your child is prepared to learn, grow, and show what they know.

We kindly ask that you refer to the FCPS calendar and, to the greatest extent possible, schedule appointments and vacations during school breaks. Let’s work together to finish the school year strong!

This week, your student received a Lexia Student Goal Sheet . As part of our mission to empower our students in their literacy journeys, these goal sheets help students see exactly how much they’re growing as readers. Please take a moment to look over the goal sheet with your child. It’s a great way to celebrate their hard work and keep the momentum going at home!

Mission Completed: We Earned a Bench

Felix Hoffman and Drake the Dragon are the first to sit on our new NexTrex bench.

Inspired by fifth grader, Felix Hoffmann, the Global and Ethical Citizens at Dranesville Elementary School collected recyclable plastics and earned a bench for our new courtyard. We are thankful to every member of our school community for engaging in this challenge and making a positive environmental difference. Special thanks to the Doerr family, our Get 2 Green Family Ambassadors, for picking up, weighing, and depositing plastic at designated drop-off locations. Congratulations, to Felix, for his leadership and impact. Thank you, Dragons, for collaborating to meet this challenge!

FCPS Students Are Invited to Get2Green’s First Student Action Summit

Join fellow FCPS students in grades K-12 for an evening of learning and connecting about environmental action at schools. The Student Action Summit will take place Thursday, May 14 from 5:30-7pm in the FCPS Welcome Center at 8270 Willow Oaks Corporate Drive, Fairfax, VA. The evening will include:

Student Sharing-an opportunity for students to share their Get2Green/environmental story and learn from one another’s successes.

  • Interested in sharing? Here are some topics to include: What issue are you working to solve? What did you try? Who helped? Presentation options are flexible and may include a tri-fold board, artifacts from your work, or a slidedeck. We encourage students to work as a team to share.
  • Those who choose not to present will have the opportunity to walk around, listen, and connect with those sharing.

Facilitated breakout discussions on environmental issues- talk in small groups about challenges and possible solutions to issues such as Outdoor Learning, Gardening, Zero Waste (reducing waste, food sharing, recycling), and Climate Change.

This event is open to all students in Fairfax County Public Schools. Elementary school students must be accompanied by an adult. Register for the FCPS Get2Green Student Action Summit. A confirmation email with additional details will be sent to all registrants and their families. Questions? Email [email protected] . Registration closes on May 8, 2026.

Integrated Reading & Writing Assessment

Thursday, March 12th, fifth graders will complete the 2026 Integrated Reading and Writing (IRW). The IRW is a state assessment that presents students with a nonfiction passage based on science or history content.  This passage is accompanied by six multiple-choice/technology enhanced items and one writing prompt that is based on the passage.  The nonfiction passage provides context for students to use when responding to the prompt, or it may serve as a springboard for students who choose to incorporate personal experiences in their responses. While this is an important academic benchmark, it is also an opportunity for students to showcase the literacy skills they have been building throughout elementary school.
