FCPS School Year Calendar

Important Dates
  • 5/1 - SOL Testing Begins
  • 5/4 - AP Testing Begins
  • 5/4 - Band Aides Fundraiser (see announcement below)
  • 5/4-5/8 - Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week
  • 5/9 - Prom! (see announcement below)
Attendance Matters!

We are quickly approaching the end of the 2025-26 school year!

  • Seniors participating in the FC Internship Program have  13 days  of school left  (May 13th is their last day).

  • All other seniors have 21 days  of school left  (May 28th is their last day) .

  • Underclassmen (9th-11th grade) have 34 days  of school left  (June 17th is their last day).

Students must show up every day and finish the school year strongly. Please encourage your child to attend school every day until their official last day.  We ask that you not plan any trips before your child's last day of school.  Doing so could negatively affect their academic performance, ability to take their SOL and AP exams, and impact their attendance.

SOL & AP Testing: SOL Testing begins April 29th, and AP Testing begins May 4th. Please ensure that your child is in school on time, every day, for important end-of-year testing.

Summer break is from June 18th to August 23rd (First day of school for the 2026-27 school year is August 24th). Please schedule your family vacations during this time to ensure that your child has a good start to the new school year.  **Remember - vacations during the school year are considered  unexcused absences  per FCPS policy.

As always, thank you for your support in helping your child show up and finish strong!

Required Immunizations for Rising 7th and Rising 12th Graders

The following immunizations are required for students entering 7th and 12th grade each school year.

All students entering 7th gradeare required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations prior to the beginning of school: Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap), Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY), and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine

  • To meet the Tdap requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 7 or older.
  • To meet the MenACWY requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 10 or older.
  • To meet the HPV requirement, the vaccination should be given between the ages of 11 to 12 or as early as 9 years old.
    •  As a parent/guardian, you may decide that your child will not receive the HPV vaccination. The school does not require documentation if a parent/guardian elects for their student not to receive the HPV vaccination.

All students entering 12th gradeare to receive two doses of the Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY)prior to the beginning of school. To meet the MenACWY 12th grade requirement, one dose must be administered at age 16 or older.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with your child’s health care provider now to avoid the rush this summer. Please consider getting your child’s immunizations early so that they can attend school in the fall. Summer is a busy time for families and healthcare providers. As long as your child meets the age requirements listed above, they can be immunized at any time.

Immunization Events for FCPS Students

FCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will provide school-required immunizations and optional flu shots for all FCPS students at no out-of-pocket cost. Multiple events will take place at designated FCPS locations.

Dates will be made available throughout the school year. Parents or guardians may view upcoming events and schedule an appointment for their student . Participation is voluntary. Additional immunization resources are also available.

Any staff, student, or community member can nominate an individual for the award. All nomination materials must be submitted by Monday, May 18.

The Minority Student Achievement Oversight Committee (MSAOC) sponsors this award to honor the legacy of Dr. Bussey, a founding member of the MSAOC and a longtime advocate for students and families.

Support Your Children During Important Spring Assessments

Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and progress assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where they are in their learning.

FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.

Parents and caregivers can help their children perform their best on these tests by reminding them to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and the cell phone policy still applies during testing season.

It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify your student’s school as soon as possible.

Learn more about how to support your child and why test participation matters .

In the Final Stretch - Updates & Reminders

As we head into the final stretch of the school year, we have some wonderful news to share: all classes are now officially moved inside the building! No more trailers.  We are so excited to have our entire school community under one roof and settled into their bright, new classrooms. The energy in the building is fantastic, and we love seeing everyone together.

As we kick off the fourth quarter, here are a few important reminders to help us finish the year strong:

  • Every class period is a valuable step toward the finish line. We encourage all students to make the most of every day by being in school and getting to class on time.
  • To ensure a smooth and successful wrap-up to the year, we expect all students to remain in school for the full day, right up until the last day of classes.

To keep our campus safe and organized, please remember that students must remain on campus throughout the school day.

  • Need to leave early? If your student has an appointment, please have a parent or guardian call us at 703-207-4019 to check them out.
  • Safety First:Please note that students who leave campus without prior parental permission will be subject to a search and school disciplinary procedures upon their return. This policy is in place to ensure the safety of every student in our care.

Graduationis just around the corner! We can’t wait to celebrate the Class of 2026 on June 3 at 9:00 AM.

Thank you for your continued support and for helping us make this a memorable and successful school year!

Ben Nowak, Principal

Reminder - Unsanctioned Senior Game/Competition

We are aware that some students are planning to participate in an activity called “Senior Assassin.”  Part of this activity involves students getting someone “out” by squirting them with a water gun. While these toy guns may seem harmless, they pose a significant risk to the well-being and sense of security in our community.

Here are some reasons why toy guns can be dangerous:

  • Difficulty in Distinguishing: In stressful or high-pressure situations, it can be very difficult to quickly differentiate a toy gun from a real firearm. This confusion can lead to misidentification and potentially tragic consequences.
  • Disruption and Fear: The presence of toy guns can generate fear and anxiety among students and staff. This disrupts the learning environment and undermines our efforts to create a safe and welcoming space for everyone.
  • Normalization of Gun Violence: Bringing toy guns to school, even in a playful manner, can unintentionally make the use of weapons seem normal and lead to people becoming numb to gun violence.

FCPS has a strict policy against bringing any weapons or replicas of weapons onto school grounds or to any school activity.  At FCHS, this includes all spring practices and competitions that are occuring at off campus locations this spring. This policy exists to protect our students, our staff, and our entire community. Students found in possession of toy guns will face disciplinary action as noted in  FCPS’ Student Rights & Responsibilities  document.

Please talk to your children about the severity of this issue and the importance of leaving toy guns at home. Emphasize that the school campus  and all off campus athletic locations  are places for learning/competition, and weapons, whether real or not, have no place in this environment.

Thank you for your commitment to making our school a safe and welcoming place for everyone.

Sincerely,

Ben Nowak, Principal

  • Attendance Recovery: If you have missed more than 10 days of school, you can recover that time by staying after school. Attendance report cards are going home this week. Please review these with your student. After-school sessions are available to make up hours missed for any reason (including medical absences, athletics, or personal travel).
  • Grade Recovery: If you finished Q3 with a failing grade, come see us to turn it around.
  • When & Where: Report to the  Main Office every  Wednesday (transportation is provided)  and Thursday (need to provide your own transportation)  from 3:00 – 4:30 PM. Since the third quarter just wrapped up, there will be  no after-school support sessions this week. We will resume our regular support services on  Wednesday, April 15, and Thursday, April 16. See you then!

It is never too late to make a comeback! For extra academic support, remember you have  24/7 online access to  Varsity Tutors via Schoology, or use  Khan Academy for free practice and subject-specific strategies.

Let’s finish this year strong, Jaguars!

Congratulations...

To  Jayden Nguyen for being recognized as a National Merit Scholarship Finalist!

A National Merit Finalist is one of approximately 15,000 high school seniors nationwide who advanced from the Semifinalist stage based on their top-tier PSAT/NMSQT scores, high academic performance, and a school recommendation. They represent the top 1% of U.S. high school seniors and are contenders for National Merit Scholarships.

Go Jayden!!

Attendance Matters!

Finish Strong Before Spring Break!

As we approach Spring Break in a few weeks, we want to keep our momentum going. Every year, we notice a dip in attendance around the holidays—let's work together to break that cycle!

Our teachers are diving into essential lessons right up until the break begins. When students are present, the classroom energy is better, and no one falls behind. Every day in class is an investment in your child's success.

Staying on Track for Q3

With the third quarter underway, please review your child's academic progress in SIS. If your child is struggling,  now is the time to act. We highly encourage students to stay after school with their teachers or the Deans of Students to get back on track. Please note that students must pass 5 classes to be promoted to the next grade.

Don't wait until the end of the quarter—let's address it today.

If you need guidance on supporting your student, reach out to us at  [email protected] .

New Visitor Management System

We are excited to announce that our school is now using the new Raptor Visitor Management System (VMS). This upgrade is part of our school’s and FCPS’ ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety and streamlining the process for visitors at our school. The VMS ensures that no visitor is on the sex offender registry.

For most visitors, the user experience will be the same when you check-in at the front office.

But now there is also an app, which can make check-in’s even faster at school. Visitors who choose to download the RaptorSafe App and create a Raptor Passport can pre-verify their information before they get to school. The app will give you a QR code you can use when you check-in at school.

If you have questions or need assistance with the new system, please contact our front office. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our schools safe!

If your spring break or summer plans include traveling abroad or to an area in the United States with high measles activity, the Fairfax County Health Department encourages you to ensure your family is protected.

Children 12 months and older should have one or two doses before traveling. Depending on your specific travel plans, your health care provider may also advise you to vaccinate infants 6 to 11 months old. Read more  about these recommendations .

  • Accommodations for Multilingual Learner Student Statements: Providing translation accommodations when Multilingual Learner students provide statements about disciplinary incidents.

The survey will be open until  Friday, February 20 Survey materials are available online .

Stay safe and warm this week!

Upcoming Altered Schedule Day - Mark Your Calendars!

The second day of WIDA Access for ELs will be administered on Thursday, February 12th. This assessment is a four-part federally mandated test that has very important implications for our students and our overall school community. In order to administer a four-part test to approximately 700 students, we have created an alternate schedule, much like we did last year. Please review the details below so you can plan accordingly.

Alternate Schedule - Thursday, February 12

  • All students taking the WIDA test will report to school at the regular time and should bring their FCPS-issued laptops fully charged.
  • Non-testing students will remain asynchronous to work on assignments from home. Asynchronous assignments will be available in Schoology for each class period (Periods 2, 6 and 8) beginning February 9 and will focus on reviewing previous material. Each assignment will count as a homework grade in the corresponding course.
  • Students in the POD (Category B Special Education)will attend school and remain with their case managers.

This day is a great opportunity for non-testing students to visit a college campus, plan for a senior internship, do a service learning project, or participate in another meaningful activity that follows Regulation 3200.1.

Mid-year 7th Semester Transcripts

To parents of 12th grade Seniors – Falls Church High School will automatically send Mid-year transcripts to colleges and universities this Friday, February 13 for the schools listed on your child’s Transcript Request Form (IS-111). Universities are aware of this deadline and will use 7th semester transcripts to review applications for students who applied regular action and/or received a deferral. If you have questions, please see Transcript Assistant, Ms. Hurtado Cespedes, in Student Services.

FCPS has already sent communication to all Virginia colleges (2-, 4-year public/private) to make them aware of our FCPS semester reports timeline of February 13th.  Students can always contact the admissions office of non-Virginia schools to make them aware of the FCPS timeline, but it may not be necessary since this is usually common practice. Again, there is no need for the student to submit a 7th semester request from the college. We will automatically send the report to every college in which you/your child has submitted a transcript request form, check Naviance to verify your child’s list.  Falls Church HS staff will work as fast as we can when the reports become available this week. We know that this is usually a stressful time of year while waiting for admission decisions and want to reassure you that we will send the needed information to the colleges.

Help Keep Our Schools Phone-Free!

Please remind your child that cell phones and personal devices (earbuds, headsets, other items connected to the internet) cannot be used during passing periods. Cell phones are also not permitted to be used as an instructional tool, with some limited exceptions for students with IEPs.

Attendance Matters!

Greetings Jaguar Families,

We hope you are staying safe and warm! Please review the following updates regarding attendance and school expectations:

  1. Attendance Recovery ProgramThe after-school attendance recovery program will resume on Wednesday, Feb. 11, and Thursday, Feb. 12.
  2. Unexcused Absences (Vacations & Outside Sports)Please remember that personal vacations or participation in non-school sports are considered unexcused absences.
    • Students with these absences are required to stay after school to make up the missed time.
    • Making up this time is essential to catch up on assignments and prevent a formal referral to the attendance officer.
  1. Attendance Meeting (Feb. 26)Parents of students who have accumulated 10 or more unexcused dayswill receive a separate email invitation. We will be holding a meeting in the auditorium on February 26 at 10:00 AMto discuss new attendance regulations, SIS codes, and legal truancy procedures.
  2. Weather Delays & AttendancePlease keep in mind that even when the school operates on a delayed schedule, students are expected to attend. Absences are cumulative, and since we are halfway through the year, we want every student to finish strong rather than struggle to catch up.

See you soon!

Upcoming Altered Schedule Days - Mark Your Calendars!

Please mark your calendars for two altered school days coming up in February. We will be administering the WIDA Access for English Learners (EL) assessment to our Multilingual Learners on February 5th and 12th. I want to share this well in advance for your planning purposes as these assessments will have an impact on the overall schedule for students taking the test and students not taking the test. Please review the details below and mark your calendars!

The WIDA Access for ELs will be administered on Thursday, February 5th, and Thursday, February 12th. This assessment is a four-part federally mandated test that has very important implications for our students and our overall school community. In order to administer a four-part test to approximately 700 students, we have created an alternate schedule, much like we did last year. Please review the details below so you can plan accordingly.

Alternate Schedule - Thursday, February 5

  • All students will report to school at the regular time, buses will run as scheduled, and the day ends at 2:55 pm.
  • All students taking the test should bring their FCPS-issued laptops fully charged.
  • All students will be provided breakfast and lunch.
  • All non-testing students with an Academy class will attend the Academy class whether at Falls Church or another site. FCPS bus shuttles will be operating as usual.
  • Non-testing students will participate in enrichment activities that we do not usually have time for during a normal school day.

These two days are a great opportunity for non-testing students to visit a college campus, plan for a senior internship, do a service learning project, or participate in another meaningful activity that follows Regulation 3200.1. Per Regulation 2234, for planned absences, please complete the attached Non-Tester Absence Form.pdf  and return it to the Dean's Office, Room 1001 by Tuesday, January 27th.

We will continue to share more details in the coming weeks with students and families. Families and students taking the required WIDA assessment will be notified via email. Our staff is being trained to administer the assessment, and we are eager to see our students’ achievement results!
