Flint Hill Updates

Good Afternoon Flint Hill Families,

It was another busy week at FHES. 5th grade students in Mrs. Stevens and Ms. Grzankowski's classes enjoyed their trip to the Chesapeake Bay. It was a wonderful hands-on experience for students to learn about ecosystems! Mr. Dickenson's class enjoyed their trip to the Bay last week. This trip is a huge 5th grade highlight!

The final PTA meeting of the year is tonight at 6:00 pm! Please join us in-person in the FHES library or via Zoom to hear about developments at FHES. The 6th grade team will also join the meeting to share updates from the soon-to-be middle schoolers!

Don't forget, the class placement input form is open until May 22nd. Please use this opportunity to share information that will help us in the process of building new classes for the 26-27 school year. While we cannot accept requests for specific teachers or friends, your input regarding strengths, needs and other circumstances is helpful.

The FHES PTA Fun Run will take place on Sunday, May 17th! See the information in the message below about how to join the fun run and register for the event.

Kindly,

Mr. Montaquila, Principal

Mr. Baker, Assistant Principal

Class Placement Input Opportunity (Due by May 22nd)

To help us prepare for the upcoming school year, we are seeking parent/family input to build class lists for the 26-27 school year. Please take a moment to complete the optional input form below.

Please do not share requests for specific teachers and placement with specific students. In building class lists for over 600 students, it is not possible to meet all requests. Feedback that includes requests for specific teachers will not be included in our review.

1.) Please describe your child's strengths and areas of need.

2.) Are there any extenuating circumstances or factors that may influence our decision regarding placement for the 2026-2027 school year?

Please provide all input through the link below ( Deadline: May 22nd). Emailed comments will not be considered.

Flint Hill has demonstrated its commitment to taking a whole-community approach to preparing its students to think critically and use technology responsibly to learn, create, and participate while preparing them for the perils that exist in the online realm, such as plagiarism, loss of privacy, and cyberbullying. With the right support, kids can take ownership of their digital lives, engage with real issues, and change their communities for the better. The recognition acknowledges our school's commitment to creating a culture of digital citizenship.

We're honored to be recognized as a Common Sense School. By preparing our students to use technology safely and responsibly, we are providing them an opportunity to build lifelong habits to help them succeed in a tech-driven world.

Programs like these adapt to each child's needs, providing extra support in areas where they're building skills and advancing them when they're ready for more challenges. This opportunity will allow students to continue their personalized learning at home, to develop digital literacies and important routines around managing their technology.

Flint Hill Updates

Good Afternoon Flint Hill Families,

This week the hard work of FHES 4th graders was on display at the Global Action Showcase at Lake Braddock Secondary School on Tuesday Night. Sra. Diaz shared the work she has been doing with students in their global classroom project with our partner school in Colombia. Throughout the year, students in FLES have had the opportunity to exchange letter, songs, books, game and projects with our partner school while practicing Spanish language skills. Felicidades!

On Monday, Mr. Baker and I enjoyed a wonderful day with students Ava and Eamon. Ava and Eamon served as principal and assistant principal for the day. They enjoyed opportunities to visit classrooms, purchase school supplies, tour the building and assist with our monthly fire drill. It was a great day. Ava and Eamon run a tight ship!

Flint Hill Updates

Good Afternoon Flint Hill Families,

Thank you to everyone who came out to support the FHES v. VES basketball game. It was a wonderful afternoon of school spirit and sportsmanship. From the choral performers singing the National Anthem, the FHES student cheerleaders, the student spectators and staff team, the event was an all-around great showing of school support. Thank you to the FHES and VES PTAs for making this event possible.

As we go into the 4th quarter, I am glad to share that FHES continues to recognize student success in school-wide reading data. Recent assessments show that FHES students are making gains as readers and classroom interventions are leading to student success. Furthermore, I want to extend a special thank you to Mrs. Anderson-Muhs, Mrs. Bate and Mrs. Sparacino for the support they have provided to FHES students over the past several months as hourly intervention support teachers for our school. Their support in classrooms and small groups is deeply appreciated!

The FHES PTA Fun Run will take place on Sunday, May 17th! See the information in the message below about how to join the fun run and register for the event.

Kindly,

Mr. Montaquila, Principal

Mr. Baker, Assistant Principal

Flint Hill Updates

Good Afternoon Flint Hill Families,

The Madison Pyramid Day of Servicewas a wonderful event for students and classes on Wednesday. In addition to Purple Up Day, students from kindergarten to 6th grade found ways to help our community. All students helped to create elementary school welcoming kits with cards, bracelets and keychains to welcome new students to our local schools. Classes also learned about native plants, pollinators and our local environment during wildflower planting, invasive plant removal, courtyard cleanups and more. We hope all the students learned from this opportunity to give back to others.

The much anticipated FHES v. VES staff basketball gameis next week on April 22nd! Save the date for a fun evening of school spirit!

Advanced Academics Programs Continuum

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development efforts and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners. FCPS offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in Grades K-12. The continuum of services approach recognizes unique student needs and focuses on matching services, not labeling students.

Through the continuum, students have:
• Multiple entry points for deeper learning opportunities in specific areas of need as they develop.
• A cluster group of students with similar academic needs to foster intellectual growth.

Teachers, Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AARTs), and school administrators work together to provide services at the elementary level. In the spring, schools review data on all students to determine services for the start of the next school year.

Please read about the Advanced Academic Programs Continuum on our school website to learn more about advanced academic services and school-based screening.

April Statewide Election: No School for Students

There will be no school for students on Tuesday, April 21, for the Virginia statewide election. Student activities, athletic practices, and events may proceed as scheduled.

Fairfax County Public Schools will still exceed the required number of instructional hours for students, as set by the Virginia Department of Education.

April Early Release Wednesdays Canceled

Elementary Early Release Wednesday Update for April

Tuesday, April 21, is now a teacher workday and staff development day because of a recently announced special election that will impact all FCPS schools.

Students will now have a traditional full day of instruction and be released at the regular dismissal time on April 22 and April 29, which were previously early release Wednesdays for elementary schools.

This adjustment allows our staff to still have dedicated time for planning, collaboration, and professional learning without reducing instructional time on other school days.Read Dr. Reid’s letter to elementary parents for more details.

Student Phones and Smart Devices

FCPS’ cell phone policy helps students focus, learn, and engage. When students put their phones away, they have more face-to-face interactionswith their peers and teachers and more opportunities to develop resilience and problem-solving skills. Please remind your child that:

  • Cell phonesand personal devices (earbuds, headsets, other items connected to the internet) must be off and away for the entire school day (bell to bell).
  • Smart watchesthat serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, calls and games) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.

If you need to contact your child during the school day, please call our front office at 703-242-6100.

Beyond the school day, we ask for your partnership in navigating the digital world. If your child has a cell phone or access to a device, please actively monitor their chats and apps.We strongly discourage "grade-level" group chats involving large numbers of students, as these can quickly become overwhelming or exclusionary. Please also be mindful that students often use chat features within games and other websites. Being knowledgeable about what your child is accessing is the best way to ensure their online experiences remain safe and positive. Visit our cell phone policy webpage for more information and answers to frequently asked questions.

Family Engagement Survey to Open March 9

FCPS is administering our Family Engagement Survey, which will be open from Monday, March 9, to Monday, March 23. Your feedback is critical in helping us to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs in our schools.

Survey topics include:

  • Welcoming environment.
  • Communication.
  • Student success.
  • Advocacy.
  • Family and school partnerships.
  • Community partnerships.

The survey will be available in English, Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Pashto, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese.

Parents/caregivers will receive a survey link via email from FCPS on March 9. A survey link will also be posted on FCPS’ website. Paper surveys will be available at each school. Please stay tuned for more information.

New Visitor Management System

We are excited to announce that our school is now using the new Raptor Visitor Management System (VMS). This upgrade is part of our school’s and FCPS’ ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety and streamlining the process for visitors at our school. The VMS ensures that no visitor is on the sex offender registry.

For most visitors, the user experience will be the same when you check-in at the front office.

But now there is also an app, which can make check-in’s even faster at school. Visitors who choose to download the RaptorSafe App and create a Raptor Passport can pre-verify their information before they get to school. The app will give you a QR code you can use when you check-in at school.

If you have questions or need assistance with the new system, please contact our front office. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our schools safe!

It was wonderful to enjoy a full week of learning! Warmer temperatures allowed for more outdoor activities and a full schedule of events.

Science Nightwas a huge success! Thank you to Emily Calandrellli (The Space Gal), the FHES PTA, teachers and volunteers who made this event possible. Students were able to get hands on and messy with science in the gym and enjoy a front row seat to elephant toothpaste and paint can rockets!

The Senior Spelling Beealso produced 17 rounds of competitive action Thursday night. Mr. Baker was on hand to celebrate Natalie P., 6th grade, with her championship word, Kilimanjaro.  Last week, in the Junior Spelling Bee, Alexander B, 2nd grade, concluded 7 rounds of spelling with "pirates." Congratulations to our champion spellers and all of the students who joined in the Bees this year. A special thank you to Beth Major and Suerah Shirazi for making this event possible over the past few years.

We can continue to accept winter wear donations through the end of the month and will help get these items to students and families in need.

Flint Hill Updates

Good Afternoon Flint Hill Families,

Even though we had a week of delays, it was great to have students back in school!

First, I want to extend my sincere appreciation to the Flint Hill custodial team. Ms. Duenas, Ms. Lainez Cruz, Ms. Villatoro and Mr. Marelino-Cabrera did a fantastic job ensuring that our building was ready for students to return. Additionally, community volunteers who cleared sidewalks, bus stops, paths to school and the track made a huge contribution toward our ability to resume school operations. Thanks to their hard work, FHES students have access to outdoor spaces including the blacktop and track for outdoor recess. As thawing allows, we will continue to clear and open other spaces for outdoor activities.

Science Nightis back on! Join us in the gym on Tuesday, February 10thfor a fun evening of science, experiments and experiences. All the fun begins at 5:30 pm. More details below.

Flint Hill students shined on stage at the Madison Choral Pyramid Concerton Tuesday night! Singers from Madison, Thoreau, Cunningham Park, Louise Archer, Marshall Road, Vienna, Wolftrap and Flint Hill came together to sing and share their talents. Mrs. D'Alelio and Ms. Golomb led 27 FHES students (the most in the pyramid) in rehearsals and preparations for the big show. Bravo!

Be sure to see the flyers below for upcoming events, calendar updates and FHES opportunities.

Kindly,

Mr. Montaquila, Principal

How to Receive FCPS Messages in Other Languages

You may wish to read FCPS messages in a language other than English. There are several ways you can receive or view our communications in a different language.

FCPS This Week is distributed in other languages to parents/guardians who have filled out the Home Language Survey form and selected a language supported by FCPS as their preferred language for communication. Home Language Survey forms are available in the following languages: Amharic | Arabic (العربية) | Chinese (中文) | Farsi (فارسی) | Korean (한국어) | Spanish (español ) | Urdu (اردو) | Vietnamese (Tiếng Việt) .

Paperless Opt-Outs Available!

As a part of our ongoing efforts to streamline paper processes, parents can now select a number of opt-out’s electronically via ParentVUE.  Once you have signed into your ParentVUE account, simply select the “Student Info” tab and click on “Edit Information.” You will find opt-out’s listed there.  Parents that do not yet have a ParentVUE account will still be able to use paper forms for notification. If you need to set up your ParentVUE account, you can create one online via the FCPS ParentVUE Registration page .
