Budget Update

Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Update

On Friday, May 8, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid provided an update on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Budget. FCPS receives the majority of its funding from the Fairfax County Government and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Fairfax County Government recently adopted its FY 2027 Budget, and at the funding levels provided, there is currently a $28 million budget gap. In addition, the state budget has not been finalized. At last Thursday's School Board meeting, the superintendent proposed adjustments that would balance the FCPS budget.

Read Dr. Reid’s message to the community for more information on the budget process and budget priorities .

New Cell Phone Policy

New Cellphone Policy Starts July 1

On Thursday, May 7, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) . The approved changes include updated guidance for cellphone possession and use, to align the FCPS cellphone policy with Senate Bill 108 . This new Virginia law goes into effect on July 1 and states that all schools in the Commonwealth must follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy.

This means that starting July 1, 2026, across all grade levels at FCPS, student cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices (including watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other other items connected to the internet) must be off and personally stored (i.e., put away in backpacks) for the duration of the school day — thus, no cellphones from bell to bell.

High school students will no longer be able to use cellphones and personal devices during lunchtime.More details are available on the FCPS Cellphone Policy webpage

Other SR&R Changes for the 2026-27 School Year

Visit the FCPS website or the School Board agenda to learn about additional updates, including:

  • Added guidance and procedures for in-school and out-of-school suspensions and discipline investigations, including supports for students with disabilities and multilingual learners.
  • Expanded guidance and standardized disciplinary procedures (“Universal Grade Matrices”) related to harassment, hate speech, discriminatory behavior, and Title IX reporting requirements.
  • Responses to incidents involving intimate images, fighting, physical aggression, object throwing, and drug policy violations.
Family Information Phone Lines

Family Information Phone Lines

FCPS family information phone lines are available in nine different languages. An FCPS employee will respond to your call in your preferred language within 24 hours, Monday through Friday.

Call the phone line with questions about your child’s education or FCPS, and someone will help connect you to resources or arrange for you to speak to the appropriate school employee. Learn more about family information phone lines .

Attendance

Finish the School Year With Strong Attendance!

As we enter the final weeks of the school year, Fairfax County Public Schools appreciates your continued partnership in supporting your child’s success. Regular attendance plays an important role in helping students stay engaged in learning, maintain connections with their teachers and peers, and finish the school year strong.

Attending school consistently also helps students build valuable habits such as responsibility, perseverance, and daily routines that support success both in and out of the classroom.

If your child needs to miss school, please remember to report the absence. Full-day absences can be reported in ParentVUE . Families may also report absences by calling the school attendance line or emailing the school-designated attendance address.

If your child is experiencing challenges that are affecting attendance, we are here to help. Please contact your child’s school so staff can partner with you to provide support and resources. Learn more about attendance resources

Support Your Children During Important Spring Assessments

Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and progress assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where they are in their learning.

FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.

Parents and caregivers can help their children perform their best on these tests by reminding them to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and the cell phone policy still applies during testing season.

It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify your student’s school as soon as possible.

Food Allergies

FCPS Caters to Food Allergies

May is Food Allergy Awareness Month. The FCPS Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) works to ensure every student has access to safe and nutritious school meals. Since 1 in 13 children in the U.S. has a food allergy, FNS works closely with families to provide reasonable meal accommodations for students whose medical needs affect what they can eat at school.

To support students appropriately and safely, families are asked to submit medical documentation to FNS from a U.S. licensed health care provider so we can tailor meals to each child’s needs.

Learn more about the documentation required and the steps to develop a safe menu for students .

Gunston Gazette

Dear Families,

May is an exciting and busy time here at Gunston, and we are  proud to share some incredible highlights with our community.

This week, Gunston Elementary was officially recognized as an AVID Elementary National Demonstration School. This is a significant accomplishment and a reflection of the strong instructional practices, high expectations, and collaborative culture that our staff and students demonstrate every day. The validation team was truly impressed with our Eagles engagement, ownership of learning, and ability to communicate their thinking stood out in every classroom visited. This recognition belongs to our entire community.

We have also enjoyed some wonderful opportunities to come together as a school. Glow Night and our annual STEM Night were both filled with energy, creativity, and joy. It was great to see so many families participating and celebrating learning in fun and meaningful ways.  As we look ahead to We Are Gunston Nightand other upcoming end-of-year events, we ask for your partnership in helping us ensure a safe and positive experience for everyone. Students should not be dropped off at events. All students must attend with a family member and remain with them throughout the event. Students should not be wandering the building independently. These events are designed for families to enjoy together, and your support helps us maintain a safe environment for all.

Academically, we are entering an important stretch. Our first SOL assessment begins on Monday, and our primary students have already started their end-of-year assessments. It was another successful Pep Rally!  Ask your Eagles to share with you about the inflatables.  😉 We are incredibly proud of how hard our students have worked all year, and this is their opportunity to show what they know.

As you support your child at home, a few simple strategies can make a big difference:

  • Ensure a consistent bedtime and a good night’s sleep
  • Provide a healthy breakfast each morning
  • Keep routines calm and positive
  • Encourage effort and confidence rather than focusing on pressure
  • Remind your child that these assessments are a chance to show their growth

Our goal is for every student to give 100% effort, 100% of the time, while feeling supported and confident.

As we move through these final weeks, we are focused on finishing strong. There is so much to celebrate, and even more growth ahead. Thank you for your continued partnership and for being such an important part of our Gunston community.

Together, we will make it a strong and successful finish to the school year.  We look forward to seeing our Eagles and families tomorrow at our Annual Trail Run at Gunston Hall.

Warmly,

Ms. Rucinski and Mrs. Ovalle

The mural features our majestic Eagle soaring over a habitat filled with native milkweed, monarch, butterflies, and our resident courtyard turtles. Gunston Elementary: Wild Horse & Burro Day

Last week, Gunston Elementary had the honor and privilege of hosting a unique educational event with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) that connected our students to both the natural world and our nation’s heritage. The students explored environmental stewardship through a "Leave No Trace" station, learning to preserve the beauty of our world by taking pictures of flowers rather than picking them, and practiced local wildlife identification at our bird call and snake safety stations. The highlight of the day was meeting Freedom and Liberty, a wild horse and burro mascot team that traveled all the way from Cheyenne, Wyoming, to help us celebrate the upcoming 250th birthday of the USA. Our students had the incredible opportunity to hear how the United States was shaped and influenced on the backs of horses and burros, transforming their classroom research into a hands-on experience with these living icons of the American West that will surely be remembered for years to come.

The highlight of the event was the creation of our "Web of Connection" handprint canvases. By mixing red and blue paint to create their own "Military Purple," students created a beautiful mural that is now permanently displayed in our cafeteria. These canvases serve as a lasting tribute to the hands that serve their families and the vibrant community they bring to our school.

Learn more about how to support your child and why test participation matters .

Gunston Gazette

Dear Gunston Family,

Welcome to the fourth quarter! This is traditionally one of the most vibrant times of the school year, but it is also the most critical. As the weather warms up, we are hard at work ensuring our students remain focused, fueled, and ready to finish the year with pride.

As we look toward May, our calendar will quickly fill with end of year assessments, including Standards of Learning (SOL), MAP Testing, VALLSS, and iReady. These assessments are an opportunity for our students to showcase the incredible growth they have made since August.  To set them up for success, our teachers are currently doubling down on goal-setting and active study strategies. We encourage you to ask your child about the specific academic goals they are working toward this month.

Currently, our chronic absenteeism rate stands at 10.4%. We need your help to bring this number down. When a student is absent, they do not just miss a lesson; they miss the momentum of the classroom community.  Please ensure your child is getting plenty of sleep so they can arrive at school alert and ready to learn. We understand that appointments happen. However, if your child has a commitment in the morning or afternoon, please consider sending them to school for the remainder of the day. Every hour of instruction counts toward their confidence and success.

To keep our learning environment productive, we are revisiting our safety expectations. Please take a moment to remind your child about the importance of following bus rules and procedures, as well as maintaining safety and respect within the school building. These habits ensure that every student feels secure and ready to focus on their studies.

Finally, we want to share a save the date. The first week of May is Staff Appreciation Week. Our team has poured their hearts into this year, and we are preparing to celebrate their dedication. Stay tuned for more details on how we can come together as a community to honor them.  Thank you for your continued partnership and for making Gunston such a special place to learn. Let us make this April our best month yet!

Warmly,

Ms. Rucinski and Mrs. Ovalle

At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website .

Pre-K and Early Head Start

Pre-K and Early Head Start Programs

FCPS Pre-K and Early Head Start programs provide a high-quality early learning experience for qualifying children with economic and educational risk factors, ages 6 weeks to 4 years, living in Fairfax County.

  • Pre-K prioritizes 4-year-old applicants but also accepts applications for children who will be 3 years old by September 30 of the same year.
  • Early Head Start is located at three elementary schools — Clearview, Crestwood, and Dogwood — and accepts applications from pregnancy to 2 years old.

Families are encouraged to apply as soon as possible; space is limited and provided based on need, not on a first-come, first-served basis.

Applications are accepted online , by email , by mail, or in person at the program office at 7423 Camp Alger Avenue, Falls Church, Virginia 22042 .

If you have a question about the application process or status, please call 703-208-7900 (English) or 703-208-7901 (Spanish).
