A message from Principal Steven McFarlane

Believe it or not, we only have five weeks of school until the end of the school year. Our teachers and students are working hard to finish the year strong. We also have lots of fun events coming up, including Broadway Desserts, end of the year concerts for Band, Orchestra, and Chorus, as well as our 8th grade promotion ceremonies. Be sure to check below for more details.

It is typical to have an uptick in challenging student behavior, as the end of the school year approaches. To head this off, our staff continues to reteach expectations and to hold our students accountable. I would appreciate it if you would talk to your child about the importance of moving quickly to class during transitions, walking calmly, and the importance of students keeping their hands to themselves.

Have a wonderful weekend, and as always, reach out with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Steven McFarlane

Principal

This week, the History 7 team transformed the Library into a hands-on WW2 Museum experience! Thanks to Ms. Hazlin, Ms. Tempesta, and the History 7 team, students explored artifacts donated by Kilmer staff, each with a powerful family story connected to World War II. Students got to touch history, ask questions, and dive deeper into the past.

New Cellphone Policy Starts July 1

On Thursday, May 7, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) . The approved changes include updated guidance for cellphone possession and use, to align the FCPS cellphone policy with Senate Bill 108 . This new Virginia law goes into effect on July 1 and states that all schools in the Commonwealth must follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy.

This means that starting July 1, 2026, across all grade levels at FCPS, student cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices (including watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other other items connected to the internet) must be off and personally stored (i.e., put away in backpacks) for the duration of the school day — thus, no cellphones from bell to bell.

High school students will no longer be able to use cellphones and personal devices during lunchtime.More details are available on the FCPS Cellphone Policy webpage .

A message from Principal Steven McFarlane

Kilmer Community,

The PTA went above and beyond this week for Staff Appreciation Week. On behalf of the entire Kilmer staff, THANK YOU! Between the coffee bar, popcorn, candy, Anita’s burritos, and Foster’s burgers, we are grateful for the time, energy, and money you put into showing your appreciation.

Thank you to Shernett Dixon-Dalhouse and Nishi Langhorne for being the faculty advisors for National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) this year. Last night, Kilmer inducted 165 8th grade students into NJHS. Before the ceremony, there was a gallery walk where students presented their service-learning projects to families and staff members. It’s a great reminder of the many students we have in this building who not only take their academics seriously, but also understand the value of serving their community. The future is bright!

Check out this Strategic Plan Update video that Dr. Reid presented at the school board meeting last night. The video highlights transition events for students going to middle school and high school. Assistant Principal Erin Kestler and a few Kilmer students were interviewed about their experience attending the Marshall Activities Fair.

Finally, students got off to a strong start with our Reading SOLs on Wednesday. Next week students will take their Math SOLs. Have a wonderful weekend, and as always, reach out with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Steven McFarlane

Principal

This year’s National TSA Conference is being hosted by Virginia and the District of Columbia at National Harbor, D.C. so many of Kilmer’s TSA members will be competing at the national level during the last week of June!

On Thursday, Kilmer inducted 165 8th graders into the National Junior Honor Society. Before the ceremony, there was an open house where students presented their service-learning projects. Congratulations to Kilmer’s new NJHS members!

A message from Principal Steven McFarlane

Kilmer Community,

Last weekend, our students did a fantastic job performing in the musical Once Upon A Mattress. A huge thank you to Ms. Nikisha Kozik and Ms. Marileigh Blake (and the many parents behind the scenes) for coaching our students through the countless hours of rehearsals and prep work to pull off a fantastic show.

Tomorrow, our track and field season kicks off at Herndon HS. If you’re available, come out and cheer on our Cougars.

A quick note about our upcoming SOL dates. Due to a few logistical issues, the Math SOL has been moved to Wednesday, May 13th. It’s still the same week it was originally planned for, just a couple of days earlier.

Finally, our student ambassadors have done a great job hosting our rising 7th graders.  We’ve had a few tours this week, and a few more are scheduled for next week. Thanks to Student Services for putting together a great program for our future Cougars.

Have a wonderful weekend, and as always, reach out with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Kilmer MS Newsletter - April 17, 2026

GovDelivery 1 month ago

A message from Principal Steven McFarlane

Kilmer Community,

This has been a busy week of learning at Kilmer! Our 8th graders attended activities fairs at Marshall and Madison on Monday. This was an opportunity for our students to learn about clubs, extracurricular activities, and elective options available to them in high school.

The cast and crew of Once Upon a Mattress, Student Edition, put on an awesome performance for Kilmer students and staff after school on Wednesday. Tickets are still available for purchase for this weekend’s performances. More information can be found below. Be sure to check it out!

Our Kilmer student ambassadors and counselors have been hard at work preparing for visits from our feeder elementary schools. Beginning next week, our student leaders will give tours to rising 7th graders, who will attend Kilmer next year. This is a wonderful way to introduce our future Kilmer Cougars to our school community and all that it has to offer.

Have a wonderful weekend, and as always, reach out with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Steven McFarlane

Principal

Positive Referrals

Here are just a few of the Positive Referrals received by our Kilmer Cougars from staff members this week!

Connor W., Raya B., and Laila K. -You really showed who you are after Crosstown on Thursday. After a great game (and victory!), while everyone was still celebrating, I looked over and saw the three of you in the stands with me and a handful of others picking up trash and cleaning the bleachers. You weren't asked, you didn't make a big deal of it, but there you were doing the dirty work. Your actions have a significant impact, even when you don't think people are watching. Thanks for all you do!

Asher Z. -Asher has done a tremendous job as a peer helper. He has shown kindness, compassion, and understanding demonstrating strong character.

Addison F. -Thank you so much for helping our guest bring in board games for an afterschool activity.

Bethel A. -Every afternoon, Bethel gets to class early and helps hand out warm ups to all of the students. She also consistently helps to clean up after class. I appreciate her positive attitude and help so much in 7th period science!

A message from Principal Steven McFarlane

Kilmer Community,

We had a great night at Crosstown Hoops yesterday! The games were very competitive, and the student section was lively. Our kids did a great job both as athletes and spectators. Special thanks to our coaches: Lena Zein, Kathleen Oliva, Jerry Gonzalez, and Brian Sirdofsky.  Nights like last night really highlight the strong community we have here at Kilmer. It was fun to see so many families and former students come cheer on the squads.

Also, Kilmer’s track and field team started practice this week. In the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing meet information should you want to cheer on the kids.

Have a wonderful weekend, and as always, reach out with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Steven McFarlane

Principal

Positive Referrals

Here are just a few of the Positive Referrals received by our Kilmer Cougars from staff members this week!

Abasin Z. -Thank you for helping another student in our English class when you saw that he dropped his pencil box. You hopped up to help him pick everything up without question, and that was so helpful and friendly!

Josiah J. -Josiah, thank you for being so kind and respectful to others in class. You are incredibly patient, you are generous with letting other people borrow your belongings, and you always do your best in class. I am so glad you are a part of our 5th period. It is better because you are there!

Carmen L. -Carmen, I was really impressed at how you took feedback on your CER outline, incorporated it into your writing without getting discouraged, and kept refining until you were really happy with your work (even though it took a few Learning Seminar blocks!). I am impressed that you focused on improving your writing skills and not just about the points it adds to your grade.

McKenna L. -McKenna, you did a great job working on and participating with your ideas during our Economy of the 1920's lesson. I like how you were thinking critically with your partner through some tough economic concepts!

A message from Principal Steven McFarlane

Kilmer Community,

The PTA is an integral part of our Kilmer Community. The Kilmer Middle School PTA is looking for parents to join the executive board for the next school year (2026-2027). There are openings for President, Secretary, and Treasurer.  No prior PTA experience required. If you are interested, please reach out to our current PTA executive board at [email protected] !

Thank you for your help with cellphones and technology. Our support with phones must be ongoing, and while there is no one-size-fits-all approach to cell phone and electronics usage, I am asking that you continue to take the following steps to help ensure that your child is using their technology responsibly:

  • Regularly speak with your child about their online presence on social media and their text messages.
  • Check-in on who they’re talking to and what they’re doing online.
  • Talk to your student about our routines here at Kilmer, including our cell phone pouches.
  • Ask to see their pouch and talk to them about using it each day at school.

Have a wonderful weekend, and as always, reach out with any questions.

Sincerely,

Steven McFarlane

Principal

Kilmer MS Newsletter - February 20, 2026

GovDelivery 2 months 3 weeks ago

A message from Principal Steven McFarlane

Kilmer Community,

It was another busy week at Kilmer. Thank you to the PTA for “Stocking the Fridge” on Thursday! A little bit goes a long way, and we’re grateful for the continued support from families.

We’re three weeks into the third quarter, which makes this the perfect time to sit down with your child to check SIS. Consider using this as an opportunity to talk with them about how they are doing academically, their goals, and how they might improve by the quarter’s end. This academic quarter is only eight weeks long and passes by very quickly. As a reminder, students may visit teachers during Learning Seminar for extra help.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars. Orchestra, Band, and Chorus have upcoming performances and shows throughout February and March. See below under “Kilmer at a Glance” for specific events, dates, and locations.

Sincerely,

Steven McFarlane

Principal

Kilmer MS Newsletter - February 13, 2026

GovDelivery 3 months ago

A message from Principal Steven McFarlane

Kilmer Community,

Congratulations to Paige Knisely for being featured by FCPS News! Be sure to check out this segment on the FCPS website, highlighting Ms. Knisley’s work to support our students: An Equation for Success: Math Teacher Provides Students with Safety, Security, and Comfort . This is another great example of the work Kilmer teachers do each and every day to support our students.

Kilmer held our first Digital Detox Day on Monday. Student laptops were away for the day in an effort to promote healthy technology habits and encourage meaningful learning experiences. Also, our Kilmer counselors also have been hard at work this week, meeting with students one-on-one for academic advising. This is a crucial part of course selection, and they will be continuing these efforts in the coming weeks.

Congrats to our former Kilmer student, Ilia Malinin, and his teammates on winning Olympic gold last weekend in the team figure skating competition. Ilia is currently in first place in the individual men’s figure skating competition after Tuesday’s short program. He skates again this afternoon in the long program. Good luck Ilia -We are rooting for you!

We look forward to welcoming students back to Kilmer on Wednesday (after the President’s Day holiday and a Teacher workday). Have a great weekend, and as always, reach out with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Steven McFarlane

Principal

Positive Referrals

Here are just a few of the Positive Referrals received by our Kilmer Cougars from staff members this week!

Mohammed M. -Thank you Mohammed for helping the custodian when she brought in the extra desks and chairs.  I really appreciate you stepping up without being asked and helping.

Liam D. -Liam is so helpful in class. He is always willing to volunteer an answer and ready to lend a hand to help with lab clean up. Thank you, Liam!

Mobina K. -Mobina always comes to class ready to learn. She has worked so hard to catch up on the material that she missed before transferring to Kilmer. She asks great questions and takes advantage of reassessment options. She is also such a sweet, nice student who always brings a positive attitude to school with her.

Camden D. -Camden, Thank you for working well with your table group. Your commitment to your learning is a shining example for all!

Kilmer MS Newsletter - February 06, 2026

GovDelivery 3 months 1 week ago

A message from Principal Steven McFarlane

Kilmer Community,

It was a busy week at Kilmer! Students and teachers wrapped up the second quarter. We also took yearbook club photos, 7th graders attended the Electives Fair during Learning Seminar today, and students began the initial course selection process for next year. Students will meet one-on-one with their counselor for academic advising in the coming weeks.

A friendly reminder that Monday, February 9, is Digital Detox Day. This day is designed to promote healthy technology habits and encourage meaningful learning experiences. When possible, classroom activities will be conducted without the use of student laptops. Students who need their laptops for accommodations may use them. All other laptops should be brought to school, but remain in student backpacks (more info can be found below).

Finally, some of you are already aware that a former Kilmer student, Ilia Malinin, is competing in the Winter Olympics beginning this weekend. Ilia attended Kilmer from 2016-2018, and many current Kilmer teachers had Ilia as a student. Ilia is currently considered the favorite to win Olympic gold in men’s figure skating, having won four consecutive US Figure Skating National titles as the first and only athlete to land a quadruple axel in competition. You can find his skating schedule here . We are cheering him on in Milan!

Have a great rest of your weekend, and as always, reach out with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Steven McFarlane

Principal

On this day, classroom activities will be conducted without the use of student laptops. Students may still bring their laptops to school if they need to use it for their accommodations or after-school activities, but otherwise they will remain in their backpacks during the school day.

We recognize that our students spend a significant amount of time interacting with technology. The Digital Detox Day aims to:

  • Inspire good digital citizenship:By stepping away from screens, students will gain a deeper appreciation for the balance between technology and offline activities.
  • Reinforce offline learning:This day will remind us that technology is a tool, and meaningful learning can still be achieved through traditional methods like discussions, hands-on activities, and creative projects.

We believe this event will be a valuable opportunity for both students and teachers to explore alternative learning approaches and foster a deeper connection with their studies!

Kilmer MS Newsletter - January 30, 2026

GovDelivery 3 months 2 weeks ago

A message from Principal Steven McFarlane

Kilmer Community,

I trust everyone’s staying safe and warm. To say it has been a herculean effort by our custodian crew to clear the snow at Kilmer is an understatement! Many of us got a taste of what they’ve been doing since Monday as we’ve shovelled (pick axed 🙂) our way out of our own homes, but imagine doing that for the whole Kilmer campus. Take a look below at a few before/after pictures. A big thank you to Kilmer’s custodial crew!

A reminder that the 2nd quarter has been extended by a couple days. When students come back on Monday morning, it will be a Green Day, followed by a Blue Day. Wednesday will be the start of the 3rd quarter/2nd Semester and it will be an Anchor Day. We’ll spend Monday and Tuesday finishing up the 1st semester and preparing students for the new semester on Wednesday.

Have a great rest of your weekend, and as always, reach out with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Steven McFarlane

Principal

  • Reinforce offline learning:This day will remind us that technology is a tool, and meaningful learning can still be achieved through traditional methods like discussions, hands-on activities, and creative projects.

We believe this event will be a valuable opportunity for both students and teachers to explore alternative learning approaches and foster a deeper connection with their studies!

Upcoming Student Experience Survey (SXS): February 23, 2026

Our school will participate in the FCPS Student Experience Survey . This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.

All students in grades 3-6, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email on February 23. We will administer the survey during 5th Period Advisory on Monday, February 23. Any student may take the survey at home, if they are unable to take the survey during the school day. You will receive a communication with details on how to preview the survey and opt your child out, if you choose. The electronic opt-out form can also be accessed at this link .

FCPS believes it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan , which include a focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.
