New Cell Phone Policy

New Cellphone Policy Starts July 1

On Thursday, May 7, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) . The approved changes include updated guidance for cellphone possession and use, to align the FCPS cellphone policy with Senate Bill 108 . This new Virginia law goes into effect on July 1 and states that all schools in the Commonwealth must follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy.

This means that starting July 1, 2026, across all grade levels at FCPS, student cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices (including watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other other items connected to the internet) must be off and personally stored (i.e., put away in backpacks) for the duration of the school day — thus, no cellphones from bell to bell.

Congratulations to the new Laurel Hill PTA members, Jennifer, Makeda and Alissa! We appreciate you volunteering your time to make our school outstanding!!

LHES Lion Pride Carnival

May 30th 12-4pm. There will be lots of inflatables, games and fun! The LHES PTA would appreciate if you can volunteer for a shift? The only way we can put on these great events are for adults and students to pitch in and share their time.

📚 Finishing Up Journeys and Themes in Language Arts 📚

Benchmark Unit 6 in Language Arts is coming to a close! Over the last several weeks, our students have learned, read, and written about the different lessons that stories across cultures can teach us.

Connect with your child’s learning at schoolwith these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:

  • Question: If you could go on an adventure like one of the characters you’ve read about in this unit, which one would it be and why?
  • Activity: Ask your child to imagine that they’re going on an adventure. Ask them to draw the items they’ll need to take with them. Would their supplies be different if the adventure was underwater or somewhere very cold?

At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website .

From the Principal’s Pen

Dear Laurel Hill Families,

It was wonderful celebrating with all of you during International Night and Earth Day! Experiencing the rich cultures represented in our community in this way was both exciting and deeply meaningful. It is always a joy to learn more about our students and families through opportunities like this. Thank you to our PTA for sponsoring such a special event, and to everyone who helped make it memorable.

We are also grateful for our music team, who supported our students with such enthusiasm, creativity, and energy during the Earth Day program. It was a delight to see and hear our kindergarten and first grade students share their musical talents. Across all grade levels, students have been learning important ways to care for our Earth—whether through recycling, conserving energy, planting trees, or simply showing kindness to nature.

As we prepare for the upcoming SOL tests (grades 3–6), please be sure you have your student’s testing schedule. If you have not received this information, feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher.

Sincerely,

Janice Dalton, Principal

Addison Smith, Assistant Principal

From the Principal’s Pen

Dear Laurel Hill Families,

We have officially reached the threshold of Spring Break, and we want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible hard work and growth we’ve seen across our campus since the start of the year.

Our students have shown remarkable dedication, and our staff has gone above and beyond to ensure all students are learning at high levels. Now, it is time for a well-deserved pause. Whether you are traveling afar or enjoying a "staycation" right here at home, we encourage everyone in our community to get much-needed rest, connect with family and friends, and spend quality time outdoors.

When we return on April 8, we will be entering the final, most exciting stretch of the school year. From spring performances to year-end projects and celebrations, there is so much to look forward to!

Don't forget tomorrow, Friday 3/27 is a 2 hour early releaseand swing by Coldstone for a sweet treat to support the LHES PTA.  We wish you all a safe, joyful, and refreshing Spring Break.

From the Principal’s Pen

Dear Laurel Hill Families,

Eid Mubarak to those in our Muslim community celebrating! In Islam, Eid al-Fitr is a 3 day festival to mark the end of Ramadan. Muslims dress in new clothes, give charity, and pray in congregation. Eid is celebrated with the exchange of presents and delicious food with family and friends. As a gentle reminder, schools will be closed tomorrow, March 20, to honor this holiday.

It's hard to believe it, but next week is the end of the 3rd quarter of the school year!  We have a unique schedule next week with Wednesday 3/25 being a 3 hour early release (1:05 pm dismissal) and Friday 3/27 being a 2 hour early release (2:05 dismissal).  Please mark your calendars accordingly and enjoy the three day weekend!

Sincerely,

From the Principal’s Pen

Dear Laurel Hill Families,

We had the "worldwide" premier of the LHES Drama Club's perfomance of Wild Robot last night and WOW did they impress!!!  Over 70 students, with the support of 5 teachers, made this first performance one for the memory books.  We were impressed with the acting, musical performances and collaboration.  We know this is just the start of a new tradition here and look forward to seeing more and more students shine!

We also wanted to send a gentle reminder about our kiss and ride procedures.  We please ask that parents and guardians follow the guidance of our adults on staff and pull all the way down the line and use the crosswalk.  Student safety is our top priority and we must ensure that all students arrive and leave safely.  Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Janice Dalton, Principal

From the Principal’s Pen

Dear Laurel Hill Families,

There was a lot to celebrate this week with Presidents Day, the Korean Lunar New Year, Ash Wednesday and Ramadan!  We send well wishes to all who celebrate.  Students (and teachers!) were so excited for outdoor recess yesterday and today!  It was wonderful to see kids outside playing and having fun.  Make sure to send students to school dressed to go outdoors.  In addition, please be aware that we have a 3 hour early release next Wednesday, February 25, and dismissal will be at 1:05 pm

Thank you for your continued support and partnership.  Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Janice Dalton, Principal

Addison Smith, Assistant Principal

Ramadan Mubarak to those in our community who observe! In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. During this month Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset each day while striving to increase their spirituality, through prayers, charity, and good deeds. Muslims believe it was during this month that God revealed the first verses of the Holy Quran to Prophet Muhammad. #OurFCPS

Lunar New Year

새해 복 많이 받으세요! 新年快乐! Chúc mừng Năm Mới! Wishing good fortune to those in our community who celebrate Lunar New Year! From the Principal’s Pen

Dear Laurel Hill Families,

It’s hard to believe we are already past the halfway point of the year! As we turn the page to the third quarter, we find ourselves at a perfect vantage point: we can look back at how far our students have come while looking forward to the growth still ahead. This quarter is all about deepening connections and refining skills as we head toward the final months of the grade level.

As a reminder, second quarter report cards went home with students yesterday in Wednesday folders and are now available in ParentVUE. We encourage you to review your child’s progress with them. If you have any questions, your child’s teacher is always a great first point of contact.

We are incredibly proud of our students’ dedication and remain grateful for the continued partnership of our school community.

Sincerely,

Janice Dalton, Principal

From the Principal’s Pen

Dear Laurel Hill Families,

After six snow days, we are finally back in school! We would like to extend a huge thank you to our custodial staff and the FCPS snow removal team for clearing enough of the sidewalks to ensure safe travel to and from school. We also appreciate our families for reminding students to stay off the snow and ice to help prevent accidents.

Next week is our monthly PTA meeting, and we encourage everyone to attend and support our school community. An Internet Safety presentation will take place prior to the meeting. The Internet Safety session will begin at 6:00 PM, followed by the PTA meeting at 7:00 PM. Both events will be held in the school library.

We hope to see you there!

Lastly, this week is National School Counseling Week. We want to highlight the tremendous impact our school counselors, Mrs. Reznikoff and Ms. Coleman, have in helping students achieve academic success and in planning for their futures. School counselors work with students in a variety of different capacities, whether it is through classroom lessons, group sessions, or individual counseling. Learn more about the role of school counselors in FCPS .

Enjoy the rest of the week, and stay warm!

📚 Halfway Through Seeing Different Perspectives in Language Arts 📚

We are halfway through Benchmark Unit 4 in Language Arts! Across grade levels, students have learned how perspective shapes storytelling and understanding. Connect with your child’s learning at schoolwith these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:

  • Question: If you could be one of the characters from one of this unit’s readings, who would you choose and why?
  • Activity: Have your child write or dictate a diary entry from the perspective of a book character.

We hope you are all safe and staying warm in the midst of the winter weather! The upcoming weekend will certainly determine our status for Monday. Please stay abreast of the district's alerts and notifications. Please help us share with families that may not subscribe to our newsletter that this is one of our main sources for communication to the school community. They can subscribe here .

Although students have been home for the snow days, a list of resources has been compiled for students and families in case they or someone they know needs assistance while schools are closed for winter weather. Please visit FCPS’ winter resources page for information on academic support, mental health support, and county resources related to food, clothing, housing, and other needs.

We encourage students to take advantage of fun learning opportunities during snow or inclement weather days. Consider these winter activities to blend education and play at home. Additionally, FCPS has extended the 2nd quarter to accommodate missing time due to the snow days. See the information below. You can also reach out to your child's teacher with specific questions pertaining to this extension and assignments.

Sincerely,

Janice Dalton, Principal

Addison Smith, Assistant Principal

Thmeaka Traylor, Assistant Principal
