LRES News Roadrunner Roundup

Dear Families,

As we head into our final week of testing, the energy in our hallways remains high! While our students are working hard to show what they know, we aren't waiting for the final results to start the party. We are already celebrating the incredible growth, resilience, and academic milestones our students have achieved this year. They have climbed mountains, and we couldn't be prouder.

Of course, behind every successful student is a dedicated staff member. Our team is truly the heart of this school, and their commitment to our children is what makes this community so special.

It is always bittersweet to say goodbye to members of our school family. While we are sad to see them go, we are immensely grateful for the time they spent with us and the lasting impact they’ve made on our students' lives. Please join us in wishing the following staff members the very best as they head off to do great things:

  • Maria Ruiz (Family Liaison):Maria has been a bridge for our community, ensuring every family felt heard and supported. Her warmth will be deeply missed.
  • Sarah Raney (1st Grade):Sarah’s patience and creativity helped our youngest learners find their footing and a love for reading.
  • Bethany Maenz (Librarian):Bethany turned our library into a sanctuary of imagination and discovery for every student.
  • Russell Arrington (5th Grade):Russell’s ability to build relationships with our students and support their academic growth has been amazing.
  • Phil Blake (6th Grade):Phil has cultivated our students’ love of math. Our students have excelled under his instructional leadership.
  • Daniella Sanchez (Kindergarten IA)Danila’s support and guidance of little learners has been greatly appreciated.

We cherish the memories made with each of these educators and wish them nothing but success in their next chapters!

While we say goodbye to some familiar faces, we are also preparing to grow! We are so excited to introduce our newest staff membersin next week’s newsletter. Stay tuned to meet the new faces joining our mission.

Good luck to all our students on their final week of testing—you’ve got this!

Warmly,

The School Administration Team

Little Run Rising 5th/6th Grade Band Registration 🎻

Rising 5th and 6th grade students have an exciting opportunity to continue in Strings or Bandnext school year!

No prior music or performance experience required! All we ask for is a willingness to learn and participate!

You will need to rent an instrument from a local music store when we return in August. If family finances are a concern, please speak with LRES admin and Mr. Wentz (Strings) or Mrs. Seifried (Band) about options next year. Please don't let money be the reason you think you cannot do Strings or Band next year.

Please complete the online form by May 29th, 2026and please read everything carefully. In the past we have done registration in the Fall, but we're getting a jump on next year already!

All students must complete the form, even if they do NOT plan to participate in an ensemble or are moving away. This helps us plan appropriately for next year’s classes.

We look forward to making music together! 🎶

**Rising 4th Grade Strings registration information coming next week!

Budget Update

Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Update

On Friday, May 8, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid provided an update on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Budget. FCPS receives the majority of its funding from the Fairfax County Government and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Fairfax County Government recently adopted its FY 2027 Budget, and at the funding levels provided, there is currently a $28 million budget gap. In addition, the state budget has not been finalized. At last Thursday's School Board meeting, the superintendent proposed adjustments that would balance the FCPS budget.

Read Dr. Reid’s message to the community for more information on the budget process and budget priorities .

New Cell Phone Policy

New Cellphone Policy Starts July 1

On Thursday, May 7, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) . The approved changes include updated guidance for cellphone possession and use, to align the FCPS cellphone policy with Senate Bill 108 . This new Virginia law goes into effect on July 1 and states that all schools in the Commonwealth must follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy.

This means that starting July 1, 2026, across all grade levels at FCPS, student cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices (including watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other other items connected to the internet) must be off and personally stored (i.e., put away in backpacks) for the duration of the school day — thus, no cellphones from bell to bell.

High school students will no longer be able to use cellphones and personal devices during lunchtime.More details are available on the FCPS Cellphone Policy webpage

Other SR&R Changes for the 2026-27 School Year

Visit the FCPS website or the School Board agenda to learn about additional updates, including:

  • Added guidance and procedures for in-school and out-of-school suspensions and discipline investigations, including supports for students with disabilities and multilingual learners.
  • Expanded guidance and standardized disciplinary procedures (“Universal Grade Matrices”) related to harassment, hate speech, discriminatory behavior, and Title IX reporting requirements.
  • Responses to incidents involving intimate images, fighting, physical aggression, object throwing, and drug policy violations.

LRES News Roadrunner Roundup

Dear Families

As we wrap up Staff Appreciation Week, our hearts (and breakrooms!) are incredibly full. On behalf of the entire faculty and staff, I want to extend a sincere thank you for the beautiful flowers, thoughtful cards, delicious treats, and the many words of encouragement we received.

Celebrating Our Exceptional Staff

Our staff members work tirelessly behind the scenes every day to create a nurturing and academically challenging environment for our students. Their dedication goes far beyond the classroom, and they are truly deserving of every bit of recognition. Seeing the community rally around them this week has been a powerful reminder of the strong partnership we share in supporting our children’s growth.

This week was nothing short of amazing, and we owe a massive debt of gratitude to Robyn McGowan, our PTA Hospitality Lead. Robyn’s creativity and tireless efforts were the driving force behind the week's festivities. From the welcoming decor to the seamless coordination, she made sure every staff member felt celebrated. Thank you, Robyn, for your incredible spirit and hard work!

In addition to the celebrations, our students have been working hard on their assessments. We are thrilled to share that the first week of SOLs has been completed with great success! We are so proud of our students' focus and perseverance, and we appreciate your support in ensuring they arrived at school rested and ready to do their best.

Important Reminder: Early Release

Please keep the following schedule update in mind for the coming week:

FCPS Caters to Food Allergies

May is Food Allergy Awareness Month. The FCPS Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) works to ensure every student has access to safe and nutritious school meals. Since 1 in 13 children in the U.S. has a food allergy, FNS works closely with families to provide reasonable meal accommodations for students whose medical needs affect what they can eat at school.

To support students appropriately and safely, families are asked to submit medical documentation to FNS from a U.S. licensed health care provider so we can tailor meals to each child’s needs.

Learn more about the documentation required and the steps to develop a safe menu for students .

LRES News Roadrunner Roundup

Dear Families,

As we wrap up another vibrant week at Little Run, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible energy filling our hallways. Seeing our students dive into their projects and support one another truly highlights the strength of our school community.

Celebrating Our Superstars: Staff Appreciation Week

Next week is Staff Appreciation Week! This is a special time dedicated to honoring and celebrating the tireless dedication, creativity, and heart that our entire staff pours into our students every single day.

I want to extend a massive thank you to Robyn McGowan and our wonderful PTA for their incredible efforts in planning a week of celebration. We are also deeply grateful to all our families for your ongoing support of our instructional staff—your partnership makes their vital work possible.

Looking Ahead: SOL Testing

Next week also marks the beginning of SOL (Standards of Learning) testing for grades 3–6. We know our students have worked hard all year, and this is their opportunity to shine and show what they’ve learned.

To help our students feel confident and prepared, here are a few tips for home:

  • Prioritize Rest: Ensure your student gets a full night’s sleep (8–10 hours) to help with focus and stamina.
  • A Healthy Start: A nutritious breakfast provides the brain fuel needed for a long morning of concentration.
  • Prompt Attendance: Arriving at school on time helps students start the day in a calm, unhurried headspace.
  • Positive Encouragement: A simple "I believe in you" or "Just do your best" goes a long way in reducing testing anxiety.

A Positive Outlook

It is an absolute privilege to lead a community where excellence and kindness go hand-in-hand. Let’s head into the weekend with a sense of pride in our accomplishments and excitement for the celebrations ahead.

Wishing you all a restful and joyful weekend!

Warmly,

Christie Yarn

Purple Up! Day at Little Run was a huge success! 💜 Between our amazing staff showing their support and our students enjoying Scoops for Troops, it was a day filled with gratitude and community. We salute our military-connected families today and every day! 🍦

LRES News Roadrunner Roundup

Dear Roadrunner Families,

What a vibrant and beautiful week it has been at Little Run! We were certainly blessed with some gorgeous sunshine and even a little preview of that summer heat! It was wonderful to see our students enjoying the nice weather and making the most of their time outdoors.

A major highlight of our week was wrapping up Super Citizenship Week. We have spent the last few days celebrating kindness across the entire building, and it was fun to see our students participate in our Kindness Bingo Board. They worked hard to be "caught" doing acts of kindness for one another, and that positive spirit was flowing through our halls all week. We encourage you to ask your child about the specific act of kindness they showed at school this week!

On Wednesday, we also took the time to celebrate our amazing military-connected families for Purple Up! Day. It was a joy to host our "Scoops for Troops" ice cream social, where our military-connected students and families could connect, share their unique experiences, and enjoy a treat together. We are so incredibly appreciative of the varied life experiences they bring to our school community and recognize their strength and resilience. We are so proud to have so many brave and resilient kids and families as part of our Little Run community.

Calendar Reminders/Updates:
  • Tuesday, April 21: NO SCHOOLfor students due to the special election.
  • Wednesday, April 22:There will be NO early releasethis day; students will follow a regular (3:15 PM) dismissal schedule.
  • Friday, April 24:Please note that PTA The World at Little Runevent has been cancelleddue to low registration. We look forward to bringing this wonderful celebration of our community's cultures back next year!

We are grateful for your continued partnership in making Little Run such a wonderful place for our children to learn and grow.

Sincerely,

Christie Yarn, PrincipalAlison Butler, Assistant Principal

The halls of Little Run were extra bright this week! ☀️ Whether we were dressing in Neon or Animal Print, the goal remained the same: celebrating Super Citizenship and catching kindness in action. Our students truly know how to make our school a better place! 🤝✨

Month of the Military Child

April is the Month of the Military Child! Every year we take the opportunity to recognize military-connected youth for their service and contribution to our community. • Calendar Updates

Support Your Children During Important Spring Assessments

Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and progress assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where they are in their learning.

FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.

Parents and caregivers can help their children perform their best on these tests by reminding them to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and the cell phone policy still applies during testing season.

It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify your student’s school as soon as possible.

LRES News Roadrunner Roundup

Dear Roadrunner Families,

What a wonderful, albeit short, week back from spring break! We missed their presence and are so glad to have everyone back for this final stretch of the school year.

One of the biggest highlights of our week was welcoming our newest Roadrunners during today's Kindergarten Orientation! It was a pleasure to meet our incoming students and their families, and we especially enjoyed the time spent together during our fun PTA Playground Playdate. We already can't wait for the next school year to begin!

Looking ahead to next week, we are excited to host a Super Citizen Spirit Week ! We invite all our students to join us in celebrating and spreading kindness throughout Little Run.

As we head toward the end of the year, please be sure to take notes on the "Upcoming Dates" section above, which now includes all major events. We especially ask families of students in grades 3-6 to take note of our upcoming SOL testing days . Please ensure students are here and on time for those days to ensure a smooth testing experience for all.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for being such a vital part of the Little Run family.

Sincerely,

Christie Yarn, PrincipalAlison Butler, Assistant Principal

Elementary Early Release Wednesday Update for April

Tuesday, April 21, is now a teacher workday and staff development day because of a recently announced special election that will impact all FCPS schools.

Students will have a traditional full day of instruction and be released at the regular dismissal time on April 22 and April 29, which were previously early release Wednesdays for elementary schools.

This adjustment allows our staff to still have dedicated time for planning, collaboration, and professional learning without reducing instructional time on other school days. Read Dr. Reid’s letter to elementary parents for more details.

April Statewide Election: No School for Students

There will be no school for students on Tuesday, April 21, for the Virginia statewide election. Student activities, athletic practices, and events may proceed as scheduled.

Fairfax County Public Schools will still exceed the required number of instructional hours for students, as set by the Virginia Department of Education.

2026-2027 Class Placement Information - Parent Input

As the end of the school year approaches, we are already looking ahead to next year. Our school team spends significant time creating heterogeneous classrooms with a balanced mix of academic needs, social dynamics, and student strengths.

Our Placement Process & Parent InputWe believe that a successful classroom is built on instructional criteria and the individual needs of every student. To ensure this process remains fair and consistent for all families, we do not honor requests for specific teachers.

Staffing and grade-level assignments frequently change throughout the summer due to shifts in enrollment and personnel. Therefore, it is far more valuable for you to share specific academic or behavioral information rather than a name. Your insight, combined with our staff’s recommendations, helps us find the best environment for your child’s success.

Submission Details

If you have pertinent information to support your child’s placement, please complete the Parent Input Google Form . Deadline:May 8, 2026.

One of the major highlights of the week was our unforgettable Cultural Assembly. We want to extend a huge thank you to our PTA for sponsoring a high-energy performance by Didgeridoo Down Under! Our students were captivated by the unique sounds of the didgeridoo while learning about Australian history, culture, and important tips for protecting our environment. It was a fantastic blend of music and comedy that left our students excited about global citizenship and the wonders of the Outback.

As we look ahead, please keep the following important updates in mind:

  • Early Release - Wednesday, March 18th:An early release day. Please be sure to check your TalkingPoints messages to confirm your child's dismissal plan.
  • No School - Friday, March 20th:Please note that there will be no school next Friday in observance of Eid al-Fitr and Nowruz.
  • Family Engagement Survey:The division-wide family engagement survey is now open. We value your partnership and hope you will take a few minutes to complete it to help us continue making our school a wonderful place for our children to grow. Please see below for more information on how to participate.

Thank you for being such a wonderful part of the Little Run family and for your continued support of our students and staff.

The VMS ensures that no visitor is on the sex offender registry.

For most visitors, the user experience will be the same when you check in at the front office.

But now there is also an app, which can make check-ins even faster at school. Visitors who choose to download the RaptorSafe App and create a Raptor Passport can pre-verify their information before they get to school. The app will give you a QR code you can use when you check in at school.

If you have questions or need assistance with the new system, please contact our front office. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our schools safe!

Community Conversations: Share Your Thoughts With Dr. Reid

As a listening leader, connecting with community members across our school division is critical to Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid. Dr. Reid’s Community Conversations are opportunities for you to share your thoughts and ask questions. Events will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. (unless otherwise noted) on:

Child care and interpretation services will be provided. Events are open to all. Visit the superintendent’s engagement page for the most up-to-date information.

Pre-K and Early Head Start Programs

FCPS Pre-K and Early Head Start programs provide a high-quality early learning experience for qualifying children with economic and educational risk factors, ages 6 weeks to 4 years, living in Fairfax County.

  • Pre-K prioritizes 4-year-old applicants but also accepts applications for children who will be 3 years old by September 30 of the same year.
  • Early Head Start is located at three elementary schools — Clearview, Crestwood, and Dogwood — and accepts applications from pregnancy to 2 years old.

Families are encouraged to apply as soon as possible; space is limited and provided based on need, not on a first-come, first-served basis.

Applications are accepted online , by email , by mail, or in person at the program office at 7423 Camp Alger Avenue, Falls Church, Virginia 22042 .

If you have a question about the application process or status, please call 703-208-7900 (English) or 703-208-7901 (Spanish).

Celebrating the Power of School Breakfast

Multiple studies show that school breakfasts are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school breakfast consume more fruit and fiber than their peers.

This National School Breakfast Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. New menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.

Would you like to know what’s for breakfast? Nutrition Services has printable menus available.

LRES News Roadrunner Roundup

Dear Roadrunner Families,

We have had a wonderful, though short, productive week of school here at Little Run! It was a joy to see our students participating in their House meetings this week. These meetings provide a special opportunity for our students to meet and collaborate with their peers across all grade levels, further strengthening our school community.

Today was also Spring Picture Day, and our students looked so sharp! We loved seeing everyone’s bright smiles throughout the building.

As we continue to prioritize the safety of our students and staff, please take a moment to review the information provided below regarding our new Visitor Management System for family visits.

Looking ahead to next week, we hope to see many of you at our PTA meeting on Wednesday. Getting involved with the PTA is a fantastic way to support our school and stay connected.

Sincerely,

Christie Yarn, PrincipalAlison Butler, Assistant Principal

Rooted in Resilience: Echoes of Excellence

Families and community members are invited to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and uplift the voices shaping our future at FCPS’ Second Annual Black History Month Celebration. Rooted in Resilience: Echoes of Excellence will take place on Wednesday, February 25, at 6 p.m., at Carter G. Woodson High School

The event will honor the rich history, strength, and contributions of the Black community through inspiring student performances and a powerful keynote address by Rev. Vernon C. Walton, pastor of First Baptist Church of Vienna. Light refreshments will be available.

Updated News Show Equipment!

A HUGE thank you to Educate Fairfax for their generous grant that allowed us to purchase updated news show equipment that was limiting student creativity and production quality.  These upgrades empower students to take full ownership of the live broadcast process, from writing and directing to filming and on-air delivery.  Our goal is for students to confidently manage every aspect of the show by year's end, building real-world media, communication and leadership skills along the way.

New Visitor Management System

We are excited to announce that our school is now using the new Raptor Visitor Management System (VMS). This upgrade is part of our school’s and FCPS’ ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety and streamlining the process for visitors at our school.

Dear Roadrunner Families,

We are incredibly proud of our staff and students for their resilience in jumping right back into learning and growing, even with the schedule changes each day!

This week, we also want to extend a very happy National School Counseling Week to our wonderful counselor, Ms. Sutton. We are so thankful for the dedication and support you provide to our students and community every day!

Looking ahead to next week, we have some exciting events on the calendar:

  • Random Acts of Kindness Week
  • Talent Night :We can’t wait to see our talented students take the stage on Tuesday, February 10th.
  • 100th Day of School:We are also thrilled to celebrate the 100th day of school next week - a perfect milestone to reflect on our "100 days smarter" journey!

If your child would like to bring in valentines, please remember that this is entirely optional. If they choose to participate, we ask that they bring one for every student in the class so that everyone is included.

Thank you for being such a wonderful part of the Little Run family!

Sincerely,

LRES News Roadrunner Roundup

Dear Roadrunner Families,

We hope you have all had a safe and cozy week hunkered down at home! Between the snow and those icy conditions, it was certainly a full week of winter weather that kept us all away from the building. We truly hope everyone stayed warm and enjoyed the unexpected time together.

We want to extend a huge thank you to our incredible Custodial team—Rose Boakyewaa, Joshua Boatng, and Abdul Ismaili. Their tireless work to clear out the snow and ice has been essential in making our school accessible for the community once again.

Looking ahead, we are so excited for our upcoming Talent Night ! This is such a wonderful event for our students to showcase their unique skills, and we need your help to make it a success. If your student is interested in performing, please make sure they register by February 4th so they can be part of the show!

We’ve missed you and are so looking forward to seeing all of our Roadrunners back at school this Monday!

Sincerely,

Christie Yarn, PrincipalAlison Butler, Assistant Principal
